IGN has posted a nice preview with footage of Jay Wilson discussing some good strategy info and play style tips about all five classes. The Barbarian video is the longest of course, since that’s Jay’s favorite, but all of them are around 3 minutes and chock full of nice character info and some new gameplay footage.

The embed doesn’t seem to be enabled on them, so you’ll have to watch them on the IGN page for now. You’ll probably want to refer to the class skills pages, since Jay mentions the uses and strengths of good dozen skills per video. Quick reference links — all are up to date with the latest info on rune effects: DiabloWikiBarbarian skills, DiabloWikiMonk skills, DiabloWikiDemon Hunter skills, DiabloWikiWizard skills, DiabloWikiWitch Doctor skills.

Thanks to Abbey for the news tip. If anyone sees these posted on YT, let us know and we’ll embed them in the post for easier viewing than the IGN player allows.

We have had a busy week getting everything prepared for launch, but wanted to take a moment to answer a few questions that have been brought up over the last few weeks. For those that haven’t checked out the project yet, Deckard’s Data Dump (DDD) is an application that, while running in the background during play sessions, harvests data about the loot that you collect:

  • Quantity, rarity and location of all item drops
  • Your basic stats at the time of the run (Magic Find, Gold Find, etc.)
  • Quantity of gold drops and location

For those unfamiliar with the tool, take a look here for more information. DDD has gotten quite a bit of attention, including a direct mention in the Best Buy Blizzard Q&A. Read on for more information on our plans moving forward and information about how you can download the tool, contribute data, and help with development.

A ton of content was released to the public recently via the official Brady Games strategy guide that sheds some light on how multiplayer scaling will work in Diablo 3:

Normal Nightmare Hell Inferno
Monster HP increase per additional player 75% 85% 95% 110%
Monster XP increase per additional player 0 0 0 0
Monster DMG increase per additional player 0% 5% 10% 15%

While there are distinct advantages to playing alone or with a group, there are a number of things to keep in mind when choosing how to venture into the world. Read on to determine what playstyle is right for you – things have changed quite a bit since we last explored Sanctuary.

The DiabloWikiwitch doctor has the ability to summon Zombie Dogs and Sacrifice them, obliterating everything nearby in a similar fashion to corpse explosion in Diablo 2. At first glance, Sacrifice seems strong, but not overwhelmingly so; however, its greatest feature is the high level of synergy it has with a number of other abilities.

With the appropriate skill selection, a flurry of zombie-explosions can net 25,000%+ weapon damage in a matter of moments. Skeptical? We were too – read on for the gory details.

Optimal Item Farming Posted 7 May 2012 by Enki at 06:17 GMT

We have developed a list of best practices for optimal item farming in Diablo 3 based on observations from the last beta patch.

This article in the new Diablo IncGamers Stategy Section analyses data collected from hundreds of full playthroughs of the beta test and helps us understand how to best structure our magic find runs.

Full analysis after the jump – the results may surprise you.

Drop rates for beta patch 18 - 3500 data points

This graphic is an example of what an analysis of ideal item farming areas could look like. The lines above represent rare (yellow), magic (blue), and normal (grey) items found per minute spent in each area. Read this chart as “On average, I find 0.7 magic items and 1.1 normal items per minute spent in the Defiled Crypt.”

What does this tell us?
Since we are looking to maximize our time spent item farming, we want to prioritize areas with a high items-per-minute ratio. In the beta, the best places to farm were:

  1. The Hidden Cellar
  2. Defiled Crypt
  3. Cathedral Level 3

This is because they provided, on average, the most items for the amount of time spent.

How did we gather this information?
Data was gathered using our tool: Deckard’s Data Dump. If you would like to contribute to these regular updates, download the tool and upload your data file periodically. It will be added to our aggregate database and used to develop future info graphics.

This data represents many full runs of the beta content – we would start on the very first quest, progress through the full beta test and record data along the way. This graphic represents roughly 3,500 item pickups over the course of these runs. We used level 13 characters with decent gear, but nothing extraordinary.

A word of caution
While our methodology is correct, it is important to note that this analysis is based on beta content. Actual results post-launch may be very different and will require additional data to be gathered and analyzed.

How it works
DDD makes use of pixel and image searching techniques to gather data. All of this data is them logged and analyzed on-the-fly, providing feedback on where your ideal magic find locations are based on your desired loot types.

Is DDD Safe to use?
Absolutely. This application does not hook into the game client, intercept packets or modify game files. In fact, it doesn’t even require you to be playing the game to log data – it would work equally well looking at a screenshot of or a video. While Blizzard will never give explicit permission to use this application, it is completely undetectable – it performs roughly the same processes as screen capture software.

Optimal Compatability Requirements
Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7
Microsoft Excel 2003+

Features under development

  1. Gold capture
  2. Back-end speed improvements
  3. Expanded area list
  4. Removing Excel dependency
