Guild Member Survey - Flux [9:44pm pst]

Our hosted site, The Guild Times, has another new article up.   This one is actually a survey, six questions for guild members.  Questions such as, "Do the leader(s) of your clan set the standards that you are looking for?" and "Think of things that often bother you within your clan and reflect upon whether or not the leader(s) address these problems."  The results of your survey are of course confidential, and will appear in a future Guild Times article.   You can go directly to the survey here.

Diablo II Technical Info - Flux [9:15pm pst]

There is a new Diablo II article up on AGN3D today, mainly addressing several technical issues.  Install size, Bnet issues, loding times, etc.  It's got info I've not seen anywhere else before, and with the Bnet section of my ongoing E3 report is not up yet, this new article is a must read.  If the direct link there won't work in your (MIE) browser, you can go to the AGN3D main page and click on the Diablo II link in today's news.

Thanks go to, who else?  Righdon for the link.

E3 Uber Report Rolls On - Flux [12:50pm pst]

Will it ever end?   Probably.  The end is in sight, at least. The ongoing project here, ongoing since the weekend, is my big report on all things E3 and Diablo II-related.  It's not done yet, but it's very big and largely updated today, so if you've been waiting, it's worth a new look now.  A nice point by point navigation system has been implemented, and pages 1-4 are finished, now.  Page five is the Monster page, and it's not finished, but then 6-10 are the character pages, and they are partially completed, but at least they have the full listing of all 150 skills/spell for the five characters.  So if you've been dying to know all about the full skill trees, now is your chance.   Unfortunately quite a few of the spells were not enabled at E3, so we just saw their icons and names, or in many cases just the name, as the icon was merely a red square.  So even when the character pages are all done later today, there will still be a lot of blanks.  You can see the full report here.

This is definitely the largest report I've ever done on this site, and if you've seen some of my past articles, you know that that's saying something. ;)

Blizzard Photo Album - Elly [7:10pm pst]

Chief Sniffer Righdon sends word that Blizzard have added their own E3 photo album.   Blizzard crew, video screens, consoles, Diablo, fans, it's all here.

New Screenies  - Elly [3:00pm pst]

Blizzard have released five new screenshots through the fansite program.  They all feature the Barbarian in Act II and III.

Shot One - Act III.  Barbarian wielding a massive two handed battle axe.
Shot Two - Act III. Barbarian with shield and sword outside entranceway to some sort of Stone Temple.
Shot Three - Act II. Barbarian running for cover from three fire casting arch mages.  These monsters have not been seen before but are reminiscent of the Arch Lich from Hellfire.
Shot Four - Act II, tombs. Barbarian facing off three Claw Vipers.
Shot Five - Act II. Barbarian taking on two adult Sand Maggots and two freshly spawned baby maggots, with more eggs rapidly incubating.

All the shots have fresh captions up on them also, so have fun.

Press Desk  - Elly [9:00pm pst]

The Press Desk has been updated with all the official Press Releases we have reported on over the weekend. One thing to note in this release is the publication of the official Diablo II Strategy Guide by Brady. If you visit their website and check out 'New Guides' it has the release date as 30 August 1999, a little premature but I'm sure they'll get round to updating the site soon enough.

Thanks to Ken Newell for this tip off.

New CEO for Havas - Elly [8:40pm pst]

Havas have announced today in a press release that Hubert Joly will join the company as chief executive officer, effective July 1, 1999.

As CEO, Joly will direct the company's strategic focus on a strong global presence for Havas Interactive products, and expansion of the company's technology strengths into the console market and the Internet. Said Havas General Manager Agnes Touraine,

"We have set a clear direction for Havas Interactive's success in the 21st century, and Hubert has ideal background and experience to execute this strategy. Hubert's leadership -- combined with the strengths of parent company Havas, and our high-quality, best-selling products -- positions us at the forefront of the worldwide multimedia industry."

Joly joins Havas Interactive from Electronic Data Systems, where he served as vice president of EDS Europe, and chairman and CEO of EDS France. In less than three years, he more than doubled the company's sales and improved profits.

Thanks to Righdon for the heads up on this release.

Necromancer AVI - Elly [7:50pm pst]

It appears that we may not only be in a cinematic treat but a gemeplay movie release is in the works too.

"There's plenty of time before DII is done to getup shots on those. We'll be releasing an AVI of the Necromancer and we'll be putting up a Necromancer section sometime as well. - Web Team"

As for a date for this?  Well as we know Blizzard don't do dates, it's an "upcoming plan" and that's the firmest date we're going to get at this stage.  You can find the posts by the Blizzard Web Team in the War Room Forum here.

Thanks to Flannel-Man, Silk and Breenon for mailing this info in.

Cinematic Still - Elly [1:40pm pst]

There's another new image up on Blizzard's main page today.   This shot seems to be taken from a cinematic but we're not sure if it's the E3 one or not. The chap could possibly be the narrator of the movie or a tavern keeper.   This'll all be cleared up as soon we get our sticky mitts on the E3 movie though. You'll notice the official site has been given the Diablo II theme treatment with heading style changes and the new mana demon now holds the text heading on the title image.

Thanks to Marcel for pointing this out.

Screenshot of the Week - Elly [12:15pm pst]

The eleventh installment to the Screenshot of the Week has been released.  Not terribly action packed but there's another chance to see that gorgeous new belt interface and check out the smilies in the stream;) Lovely job.

More Blizzard Forum Activity - Flux [8:30am pst]

I'm not sure if we are going to get into the habit of posting about it every time anything from Blizzard that is in any way Diablo II-related appears in a forum, (Not that we've grown jaded, but if the post isn't anything real new and exciting, but is just clueing someone in on what they should have known already, we're probably not going to go on and on about it.) but since we have been busy with that the last couple of days, here's one more.  In the Bnet Diablo II Forum, in reply to a post decrying the ignoble practice of consuming hearts for health, "Blizzard Web Team" posted:

The Paladin doesn't eat hearts nor does any other character.  Characters use the Convert skill to turn hearts and other objects into useful items such as potions.

That's the whole message.  I think by now probably most everyone who has been following the news knows about Convert and how it will work on body parts, but it's nice of the Web Team to help out like this.  Also if you will remember a post Erich Schaefer made a couple of days ago, he said that they weren't real happy with Convert now, and that (like everything else) it was subject to change.   As I said in my ongoing Uber E3 Report, Convert was only put into the game a couple of weeks ago, and is just about guaranteed to undergo some more (probably substantial) changes over the next couple of months.

Thanks to -Luxeflex~KotBH and []BuRnInG~IcE[] for sending in this info.

Barbarian = Fun - Flux [7:47pm pst]

Not content with just posting in our forums, Erich Schaefer has dropped a post into the bnet Diablo II Forum as well.  The title is the same as the title of this post, and in a reply to someone complaining about the Barbarian's percieved weaknesses, Erich said,

Don't worry. The game has changed alot since the original Diablo, so it might be hard to imagine the gameplay of the Barbarian and not being able to buy potions.

The Barbarian is very fun to play; he's currently the most popular class with the development staff. Just wait till you buzzsaw through the beasties with a sword in each hand, or leap through the sky and land swinging a giant axe.

At E3 neither Jump or Offensive Jump were enabled, so I can't vouch for the leaping part, but he had great stamina, able to run just about forever, and he was working fine with the weapon-in-each-hand technique.  War Cries had a very nice graphic and animation also, sort of like a mini-nova.

Thanks to ][)iablo2 and I Forget for emailing in this news.

Weekly Network News - Flux [9:27am pst]

Ahh, excitement's in the air.   Enough of that damn E3 news.  You're sick of the game info and all that.   You want network news!  And by god, you shall have it.

Clan Greysoul - GS tells us, "...currently working on some "top secret" stuff.  Pretty much all I can say now is that it involves flash/shockwave and it should be done in about a week."
Diablomods
- Varay tells us, "The 1.07 mod is up and running fine for two weeks or so now, it's final except for a minor (cosmetic) bug with the new "bigger gold slots" feature, which we will fix tomorrow (by simply taking the feature out again :-) ). "
The Dark Library
- Krush tells us that the Dark Library will have some new stories up very shortly.  Also, another story by Flux will be up next weekend.  I was a bit too distracted by something else last week to get it all edited.
Diablo II Tomb of Knowledge
- James is making excellent progress on his new layout, and also has a couple of new item sections coming up soon, based on info from E3.
The Guild Times
- Alton tells us, "Two new staffers have been added to the squad: Todd and Gilde. They will be helping out with the site and improve the quality of the site. Expect many more interviews and stories as well as several new sections managed by them."
Holy Knights of Westmarch
- Gaining points for honesty, Esotar|ous tells us, "Gearing up for Star Wars, not alot going on...".
Hydra's Claw
- Lots going on in HC of late.  Flannel Man sent me a whole page of happenings, but his highlights are, "I'd say that the most important things are that we are thinking about a new government, we are friends with Gryphon's Claw, and ParaVoid is finally catching up with Mustafa."
Knights of Bnet
- Blade tells us, "Lots of members left to found a new guild. The KOB is currently working on a new set of laws and a comprehensive consitution. We are not accepting new members right now until we get our guild straightened out a bit better."
The Lost Scrolls
- Smoke has finally pulled himself out of Everquest and with the glut of new E3 info, he's working on some major site updates.
Riders of Apocalypse
- The Riders have voted to form an alliance with The Obsidian Brotherhood, so that will soon come to pass.  Also, new members are still welcome.
Warpath - At last, we still have one site working in secret on their nefarious plans for world domination.   They will use our souls for poker chips.

Blizzard in the PS Forum - Flux [7:44am pst]

Feel free to smack my nose with a rolled up newspaper, but while doing the update yesterday afternoon about Erich Schaefer's posts in the Main Forum, I didn't bother to check the PS Forum, just in case.   Oops.  As Gaile kindly pointed out to me last night, Erich posted several messages in there also, each just brimming over with tasty new Diablo II info.  Read them for yourself, but briefly, in a very long string about play-balancing mage characters in Diablo II, Erich posted some interesting thoughts about how the one skill point per level up will work, and described why the Sorceress is his favorite character so far. (I thought she looked the most powerful at E3 myself.)  Elsewhere Erich posted some replies to a poll about Diablo II, and then replied to his replies and added some more info about a couple of other things.  Got check 'em out.

Diablo II Vote - Flux [7:17am pst]

There is a vote up on E3Show.com (not the official site) today, asking "Which game are you looking forward to the most?"  Diablo II is one of the choices, and on the current results it's winning, 14% ahead of Quake 3, but of course that's not nearly enough of a lead.  Go vote if you are so inclined, though it might take a while, their server was running at about dead rat speed when I went to check out the vote earlier.   Also, they have a small Diablo II article up, though there's not any real info you've not seen already.   Sorry, but I'm not feeling like there's too much point in dropping an URL to every short Diablo II at E3 article on the net lately, (they are springing up like toadtools after the E3 rain) as the info we've posted here already is so much more comprehensive.

Thanks to Shinee of Svenska Diablo II for the news tip.

More Uber Report, as Requested - Flux [6:42am pst]

It's far from finished yet, but as people keep emailing asking when I'll be posting more of it, I've uploaded the progress to date.  Covered so far are the new game interface features, how the E3 demo was set up, the new interface, lots of general game comments, how the Blizzard booth was set up, and a lot of other general information.  Coming soon, full info on all the characters, including all 150 skill names plus info on most of the skills, extensive info on Act Three, lots about monsters and items, and tons more.  Also the current info will be better organized, set into separate pages with more frequest section headings.  All the nice organization that we do and that you know and love.  I'd estimate that maybe 1/4 of it is online now.  Read the Uber Report on E3 here.

New Diablo II Info In Our Forum - Flux [6:21pm pst]

Yes, just when you were getting low on Diablo II info (sarcasm) it's Blizzard North VP Erich Schaefer to the rescue.  (Where were you at E3, Erich?  We looked everywhere. ;) He's posted several interesting notes in our main forum today, and you can pop over there and find them yourself, or else click from here.  Post One details that there will likely be at least eight spell hot keys, up from the four of Diablo (and the E3 build).  Also the keyboard controls will be fully customizable.  Post Two covers Blizzard's rationale for adding just one skill point per character level up, which most people seem to think is not enough.  Post Three talks in great detail about how multi-player saved games will work over Battle.net for Diablo II.   Thanks for your time, Erich.

D2 Footage from E3 - Flux [9:22am pst]

No, this is not a post about already having the last request anwered.  However, it is something of interest for everyone.  There is a fifty minute real player version of an AGN presents E3 Live from LA.  At the 20:25 mark, after a lot of stuff you'll probably have no problems skipping right over, they are in the middle of an interview with some designer of TA Kindgoms, and poof, maybe ten seconds of Diablo II footage runs.   While the TA guy is still talking.  This is at about the 20:25 mark.  It ends quickly, and back to more TA footage, where absolutely nothing is happening, as far as can be seen from the small slow frame-rate viewing window.

It gets better though, as at 32:43 an interview with Bill Roper begins, and during it they show the same Diablo II footage again.  The image quality is pretty poor, as you would expect from Real Player in a small window, and I found the loading time to be pretty steep, and I'm on a cable modem.  However if you didn't get to actually talk to Bill Roper at E3, you'll probably find it interesting to hear what he has to say here.  Nothing we haven't covered elsewhere in our E3 reporting, but a few hot listed facts (that would normally have us doing backflips, but we've grown jaded lately ;) for you:

Release date estimate - August-November range.
Vastly larger game.
Battle.net improvements galore including less PK'ing problems, Guild Halls, Arenas, and more.
Discussion of the technical aspects of Battle.net.
Unannounced Products.  "New directions for us."
Enabling the client-server model (how the characters are saved on Bnet for Diablo II and added security.) is a big step forward for them, and getting it to launch on time with Diablo II is a major project.  (It sounds from what Bill says here that Diablo II is NOT going to be the only client-server type of game they come up with in the immediate future.)

The interview runs about seven minutes, so enjoy.  It should be worth the long loading time.  Thanks to Smoke of TLS for the news tip.

Requests for Assistance - Flux [8:33am pst]

So I got all the spell and skill names, and info on almost all of them at E3, and I'm writing them up in the Uber Report, when I finally realize that I forgot to get pictures of all of them.  *Kicking himself* We have a shot of all three Sorceress skill tabs, the Amazon Javelin and Arrow trees, and Barbarian Masteries.  We would love any or all of the others, in whatever quality anyone might have.  Feel free to send them in if you were there snapping anypics.  And also, there were dozens of people there taking video tapes of the game play monitors.  If anyone gets one of those tapes encoded and posted somewhere, please let us know, we'll be happy to post about it, or even post it here if your server can't deal with it.  Thanks.

DiabloII.net at E3 Updates Galore - Flux [7:26am pst]

No, I don't have any more of the Uber Report up yet, but there is a lot of other stuff for you to check out.   Gaile banged out a meaty list of new features and facts that she heard and overheard at E3. Lots of new game info here, several things that were news to me even.   You can read all her new info here.   Includes news on the beta, a Diablo II expansion pack, item durability,

Also, our E3 coverage section has gained a title page, and a big one it is.  Links to all the articles we've completed so far, plus all the new images organized, including all the screenshots and art work, plus a big stack of new pictures from the event.  Ever wondered what Flux, Gaile, Max Schaefer, Bill Roper, and many others look like?  Plus extensive shots of the Blizzard booth at E3, and a few other things of interest.  See them all here.

The Uber Report Begins - Flux [6:22am pst]

Yes, it was inevitable.   Tons of new info, Flux goes into Uber mode.  And this time I mean it, as there is a preview's worth of new info up already, and it's not just the tip of the iceberg, it's a penguin on the tip of an iceberg.  Much much more to come.  For now you can read about the cheat codes in the demo, the brand new skill that every character possesses, Convert, the lack of healing spells, the new inventory window, the new interface improvements, and much more.  Get all of that here, and there will be much more information posted later today.

Gaile Goes Random on E3 - Flux [4:12am pst]

Beating me to the punch again, Gaile has gotten up a quick article about the happenings and the people at the Diablo II booth at E3.  Mostly a behind the scenes/personalities revealed sort of thing, it will be interesting to anyone who wants to know what the actual people working for Blizzard and Blizzard North are like.  You probably got an idea of how they were from my news post a bit down the page, but Gaile was a bit more exhuberant, as usual.  Read it here.

Diablo II at E3 Report - Flux [1:09am pst]

No, not mine, it's not ready yet.  This is a sort of introductory article about the Diablo II build at E3, on E3.net.  You can read it here.  Nothing shockingly new there, but no big errors, at least.  Thanks to Syn for pointing this one out.

New Blizzard Products - Flux [12:32am pst]

Yesterday at E3 Blizzard was passing out a new press release announcing some new products.  It's got some big news, and some things we'll probably all want to buy.  Let me quote a few of their remarks:

Blizzard is in final negotiations with a major book publisher to license novelization rights for its Diablo, StarCraft and Warcraft universes.  Under a nine-book deal, three novels will be published for each game.  The first in each series will begin appearing during the spring and summer of 2000.

Additionally, Wizards of the Coast subsidiary TSR Inc. is creating a variety of products including fast-play games, boxed sets, and adventure module.  The Diablo games will be based on the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons rule book, while the StarCraft products will follw the Alternity science fiction role-playing rules system.  The first games are scheduled for release later this year.

Following last year's successful launch of StarCraft and Warcraft action figures, Blizzard also announced plans to self-publish a line of Diablo II figures.  The first series will include Diablo and three other heroes and monsters from the game.  The action figures will be available when Diablo II launches later this year.

The things I see of interest here are the "first series" of Diablo II action figures, and the "when Diablo II launches later this year."  And of course the novels are interesting as well, and the role playing games.  Franchise power.  Incidentially, there was a little hole in the wall Brady booth somewhere at E3, handing out bookmarks with a part of a render of the Amazon on them.  I never saw the booth though, just saw a few people with the bookmarks.  =(

E3-verything! - Flux [9:32pm pst]

Just back from E3 this evening, and almost at a loss for words.  Diablo II was so great, so much fun to play...  I can't overstate how cool it is, even in this early form.  Also, all the guys from Blizzard North were awesome.  Very forthcoming with the info, friendly and easy to talk to, and they all knew me immediately when I introduced myself. =)   They all check out the site regularly, and they weren't just saying that to humor me. (or if they were they were doing a very good job of it.)  I got to play for probably 3 hours total today and yesterday, and interviewed/discussed the game with guys on the design team for probably 8 hours.  Literally.  I also can not overstate how much info I have on the game now.  Totally new stuff, old stuff that's changed, current stuff that's been redefined or elaborated upon, etc.  I don't mean to be a tease, but there will be enormous amounts of new stuff updated this weekend and probably into next week.  We have a lot of new pictures also, mostly of Gaile and I with various Blizzard guys. ;)

Special thanks to Matt Householder for running our personal demo and answering a ton of questions from Gaile and I.  Mike Scandizzo (sorry Mike, I'm sure I butchered your last name, but as no one but the FBI crime lab could read my handwritting, please forgive.) a programmer who's working on the Sorceress' spells, among other things, and answered my questions and talked to Gaile and I about the game for probably two hours. Ben Boos, who dies the killer background art (including the new angel/devil interface that was done mostly for the E3 build) and was kind enough to give me a business card so I could see how cool the Bliz North business cards are.  Also to several other Bliz North guys who were happy to talk and had great info, but whose names I didn't write down, since I'm a bad bad person. Also the President of Blizzard North, David Brevik, who was very informative in our talk, (mmm, Guild Hall info=) and was happy to pose for our stupid pictures and then got us T-shirts too.  Also Bill Roper and Max Schaefer for being eager to chat and inform, and Tony Gervase and Susan Wooley, PR people extraordinaire who came up with everything we asked for and things we didn't.

I know it sounds like I'm really kissing ass here, but trust me, they were far cooler than you would ever believe they would be, or than I had any right to expect them to be.  I mean when guys working on Diablo II shake your hand and say, "Keep up the great work." and they mean it sincerely, and all I do is work on a dumb website, while they are turning out the most amazing computer game ever, what more can I say?

And this is just the names I can remember right now for myself, I'm sure Gaile will have a lot of people to mention also, as she was bonding left and right. ;)  Look for an article from her in a couple of days.

Also look for contests for good prizes here soon!  We have Diablo team signed copies of Diablo, E3 press cd's, Diablo II T-shirts, Diablo II stickers, and other miscellaneous loot.

To slip some actual info into this update here at the end, I'll drop a few new tidbits.  I have all 150 character skill names written down, but here are a few for each character that you've never heard before.  About half of the skills were't enabled for the E3 build, but most of them at least had pretty icons to savor, and all of them had names.

Amazon - Plague Javelin, Zeus's Bolt, Valkyrie.
Barbarian - Offensive Jump, Double Throw, Iron Skin.
Necromancer - Fire Golem, Bone Spear, Iron Maiden.
Paladin - Purification, Blessed Hammer, Holy Wind.
Sorceress - (I don't believe any of her spells names have changed since the chart of her spells in the recent PXCL article, but most of the ones in the game worked different than I had expected, or had never before been seen in use.  A couple of examples.)
Chain Lightning - Now sends out a ground bolt, like a big charged bolt, but it hits a monster and then bounces around to two or three others on the screen, sometimes back and forth between two monsters, like a pinball.  Neat, apparently but far less powerful than it was in Diablo.
Static Field - Hits everything on the screen with a charge, sort of like a weaker version of Apocalypse.  (The way that spell was in Diablo, I mean.)

That's all for now, but MUCH more info to come as soon as I can get it all written up.  You may drool. ;)

Lastly, no one send me any emails for the next few days unless it's some breaking news item, please.  I have 105 unread ones now from the last three days.  Also, for the dozen+ people who have written recently requesting site hosting, I'll reply to you when I get a chance, try and be patient.

Installments Two and Three - Elly [6:25am pst]

As promised our 'work in progress' E3 feature is swelling with the second and third installments just in.   Gaile managed to prise her knuckles out her mouth and calm down enough to put pen to paper and send us a couple of reports.  The first 'A wee dab of History' probes the founders on how and why it all begun.  'Game Observations' talks you through the hour [some people are born lucky:)] of gameplay and judging by the rate Gaile was burning up my email and ICQ all night we can safely say it was an extremely enjoyable experience.

Gaile is back to the show tomorrow, well later today, and has promised to bring back more new information come hell or high water, so be warned Blizzard:)

Flux is back home today and no doubt ready with that Pulitzer prize winning analysis. Yes, make no plans for the weekend if I were you.

So that's me signing off for the weekend to Fusion '99 no doubt to get a serious pasting in the tournaments.   It's the taking part that counts.  Aye right:)

Renders and Photos - Elly [5:30am pst]

Gaile with her trusty camera snapped some more tasty shots of the seemingly massive sketches dotted around Blizzard's stand.  In amongst this latest batch are also some excellent shots of some of Diablo II's creators.

Sketch One - Waterside shacks.  From the stone carvings this looks to be conceptual art for Act III set in a Mayan environment.
Sketch Two - The Amazon standing proud.  Wonderful backdrop of layered wall etchings.
Sketch Three - The mummified Reaper.
Sketch Four - Designs for a vulture - check out those thighs.
Sketch Five - Hydra-like creature, no doubt waiting to spice up a dark and stormy night.
Sketch Six - Village elder preparing for a ceremony at the local temple in Act III.

Poster - A fantastic full colour montage of all five characters.

New & Updated Screenies - Elly [2:00am pst]

The screenies from the E3 Press CD have now all been added to the site together with thumbs in the appropriate Info Gallery section.  For ease though they are listed below.  Some are new and some we reported on earlier this month but were only scans or smaller versions. Of course a full analysis of all the new screenies is forthcoming.

Shot Eleven - Sorceress, Act I - Wilderness.  Using Ice Bolt on a retreating Quill Rat. Previously only a scan of the image.

E3 Movie Shot Two - A clocked figure emerges from the inferno.
E3 Movie Shot Three - Another Monk figure in the midst of exorcising a spectral entity perhaps.

It's not known for sure when the E3 movie will be released for the masses.  We'll be sure to keep you posted on that though.

The Next Blizzard? - Elly [11:50pm pst]

Sorta Diablo II related is a tiny poll conducted by Next-Generation.   They ask "We polled the floor today to find out who the people of the industry believe has what it takes to be the next Blizzard."  I shan't quote anything here for fear of accidentally pasting the entire item.  Aye, it's that small. Still, with DII this year and the yet still unannounced project on the cards is the crown even for the taking?

Thanks to Righdon for tip off.

Official Releases - Elly [7:00pm pst]

I have now added the two Press Releases from Blizzard to the
Press DeskFirstly "Blizzard combines 2D and 3D to provide enhanced lighting, atmospheric and perspective features" and also "Perspective Scaling and Parallax, Act III and Barbarian revealed; Macintosh version announced" and you can read that here.

GS Impressions - Elly [3:26pm pst]

Righdon sends word that Gamespot have a wee article on their impressions of the latest build on show at E3 which you can find here.

Photies - Elly [2:45pm pst]

Flux managed to grab a moment to upload the contents of the Press CD along with a few photos of the Blizzard stand and entrance hall.  I shall get the thumbs and full size images up immediately.   For now:

Photo one
- Lobby of convention center, looks like a fire officer's nightmare.
Photo Two
- Blizzard's stand.  Fight to see who can get closest to the console I think.  You can see Flux on the far right staring up in awe.
Photo Three - Big, big shot of the cinematic area.

First Installment - Elly [2:00pm pst]

Just received word from Gaile that she and Flux have conducted their first two interviews, clocking up 2 hours.   They are in the process of sifting through the reams of notes at this moment but have sent a quickie "off the top of my head" report as they know you're waiting for the juice.  You can soak it all up here.  They also send word that Blizzard are showing 4 cinematics. Two are game play, 2 are actual cinematics.

Avault Pre-event Item - Elly [11:19pm pst]

TruthSword of RPG specialists Vaultnetwork sends word that Avault also have a pre-event item up.   By the looks of things this and CGO's from earlier are based on some sort of release from Blizzard as the text is the same.  This one contains a bulleted list but more pleasing three full sized images of the ones released earlier on gamecenter.   Which we shall be shamelessly nicking and replacing here:) You can catch it all here.  And I think it's about time to purge this news page, something tells me the next 24 hours are going to be busy.

CGO Pre-event Item - Elly [10:55pm pst]

Computer Games Online have a small pre-event item up which we assume must have been gathered at the conference day [today] of E3.  Although fairly brief below are a couple of the more interesting points worth noting.

Blizzard also unveiled Diablo II's perspective scaling and parallax, a new display option within the game's 3D-accelerator support options. Scaling and parallax effects add what the company is calling "near-perfect perspective to the 3D-accelerated isometric view." The effect is at its best when the character is running through terrain populated with trees or around buildings

A Macintosh version of the game is slated for completion during the first half of 2000.

The full item can be found here.  Thanks to Righdon for the tip off.

E3 Screenies - Elly [9:00pm pst]

The exhibition doesn't actually start until tomorrow but already Gamecenter has some shots pulled from the E3 CD, reduced to the usual 2/3's size and up on their site.  So without further ado here they are.   Analysis to follow shortly accompanied with full screen versions.

Shot One - First seen in our PCXL report as a scan. Sorceress, Act I showing off Frost Nova.
Shot Two - New.  Barbarian, Act II in the Harem with Kitty Legionnaires and skeletons.
Shot Three - New.  Barbarian, Act III with two approaching vultures.
Shot Four - New.  Barbarian, Act III with his Warcries skill tree open.  Only four are revealed but 'taunt' is identified.
Shot Five - First seen in our PCXL report as a scan. Amazon in Act III on the steps of a Mayan temple.
Shot Six - A render from a cinematic movie, more than likely the one Blizzard are premiering tomorrow.  At the moment this creature has no name and by the looks of things no legs, or at least they are not visible.

Player Matchup - Elly [6:50pm pst]

Well the nav bar is growing a bit faster than expected in the Player Matchup section with Barbados, Romania and Malaysia now getting in on the act.   Heaps more profiles have been added and a fair few players have updated their existing profiles.  If you'd like to have your own profile you can either go directly to the submission form here or locate it in the Player Matchup section.

Diablo II in Comic - Flux [3:01pm pst]

In the PVP for May 12th, Diablo II is featured in a rather humorous way.  Read it here.   PVP is a long-running internet-only cartoon that was originally called Samwise, was about Ultima Online, and was painfully hysterical back then, skewering so perfectly the people and situations in that world.  It was frequently very inside, and for those of us who were playing UO at the time and growing a bit jaded by it, a new Samwise was often the highlight of the day.  Funny characters, good art quality, and good writing made it consistently a knock out.  After some months off, dealing with the post-UO disillusionment that so many of us went through, the strip's creator, Scott Kurtz, relaunched the redesigned Samwise, now focusing on the employees writing a computer gaming magazine called PvP, which is the new name of the strip.  Of course since one of the employees is Skull the Troll, who was an original Samwise cast member, it's a bit surreal.   That's a good thing.

And not entirely coincidentally, Bill Roper of Blizzard named the PVP strip his favorite internet site in the recent Gamestar Interview of him we have translated here.  PVP is updated three times a week, (usually) and it's been one of my regular surfing stops for months, so obviously by this post, I recommend it.

Diablo II Release Date Vote - Flux [2:31pm pst]

There is a new vote up today on MPOG asking, "Which of these games is most likely to still be unreleased at next year's E3?" And as you have probably guessed, Diablo II is one of the choices.   In fact right now it is leading the pack with 32.7% of the vote.  C&C 2: Tiberian Sun is second at 25.8%.  So go vote if you are of a mind to.  This is probably one poll we don't want Diablo II to win, and my personal belief is that Blizzard North will make their 4th quarter targetted release date, but vote your conscience, as they say.

Thanks to Optimass for the news tip, which he sent in to prove that Righdon wasn't the only news hound around here. ;)

New Diablo II Image on Blizzard - Flux [7:56am pst]

Yesterday the image on the main page at Blizzard was switched to this one, a screenshot from the Diablo II Cinematic that was premiered at E3 last year.  Last week Blizzard also had up an image from the cinematic, so it would seem that it's on their minds.  Probably related to the new one that will be premiering at this year's E3?  You can see a larger, text-free version of this shot here.

And on the E3 topic, Gaile and I will be there in just about 24 hours, meeting face to face for the first time, and probably standing in some endless line for media registration. ;)  But hey, we'll be there.

Bill Roper Interview - Flux [6:03am pst]

Yes, another German magazine and/or website with Diablo II news.  This time it's not strictly about Diablo II, it's a short interview with Bill Roper, and it's from Gamestar magazine.  You might remember them as the source of the epic 81meg, nine minute game play movie released in early February.  (You can read our epic report on it here.)   And they also provided us exclusively with half a dozen Diablo II screenshots, and had an enormous Diablo II Article in their mag in February.  Well, they got a hold of Bill roper during his recent European Press Tour, and the result was a short inteview/profile of the man.  It's got some interesting stuff to help get the cult of Bill up and running.  Favorite games, website, food, music, and much more, including a bit of info on Diablo II as well.  You can read the report, translated for us by Moritz, here.

German Games News Translation - Flux [3:33am pst]

Monday, we posted about a new Diablo II preview on Games News, a German site.  We haven't gotten a full translation, but that's only because all three Germans who read it and reported on it said it wasn't worth the trouble.  Here is a quote from Smokey:

First there is a short comparison between Diablo and Diablo2. The only interesting thing in this passage is, that it is mentioned that cities will be attacked by monsters. This isn't new, but I've heard nothing about that for long time. Then follows a short describtion of the characters without any new info and then a valuation of the graphics. At last there is some information about the gameplay, nothing new, but the article says, that D2 will be quite 4 times bigger than D1, while Bill Roper himself claims, that it'll be at least 7 times bigger.

This article gives us no new information and it's not worth to be translated completely.

So there you have it.  If you were frantically learning to read German just for this article, (and who wasn't?) you can relax.  We don't mean to insult Games News, as there are tons of previews in English out there that don't provide any new information either.

News previous to this can be found here.
