    Undeadcraft Tournament

    You are playing an Undead. Your goal in this journey on Sanctuary is to develop your powers over the dead and enhance your own condition. The type* of Undead you are determines what skills and items you can use (not what class ex. Amazon). You may also follow a path and have a special talent, making you a unique and remarkable creature.

    *You can mix any Character Type with any Class (ex. Vampire-Necromancer, Mummy-Druid) but some mix are better supported (and on theme).

    The Undead will stay away from Fire. Some, like the Vampire, fears it greatly. Cold, Poison and Lightning will be your friends here. Also, Terrifying the living, and the other dead, is quite satisfying, which you shall do.

    Quick Self-introduction:
    I’m Mezion, most of you probably don’t know me cause I’m a longtime lurker/rarely poster. Some years ago, I rediscovered Single player (I was playing mostly that for a while, than only Bnet, and then felt in love again single player). During that time, I saw The Afterlife Tournament , and I thought “This is awesome! So much Flavor to go with the gameplay, fun times!” The Tournament ended at one point, but I still continued to make funky character here and there, even in other games.

    Now I’m back here, and it’s my time to make an Undead-themed tournament! (Still inspired from The Afterlife Tournament) However, I like complex scenario and deep immersion, so here it is:

    What’s the focus?

    There is several focuses for this Tournament:


    • The Undeads (and anything related to dark magic)
    • Roleplaying
    • A modular approach on Character building
    • Crafting Items
    • Using Skill Charge
    • Fun!

    Character Types:

    • Vampire
    "You were turned into a Vampire, an Immortal creature, predator to mankind. You now hunger for blood, the same blood that enhance your new supernatural abilities."


    • Mummy
    "You are a cursed mummy, away from her lost temple. You are now able to control the curse that is affecting you , using it to modify your body and bright misery to your opponents. Being far from your treasures only drive you to acquire new ones."


    • Banshee
    "You are a tormented spirit filled with sorrow and pain. In undeath, you seek to share your misery and death with the living. Your voice is now your greatest weapon."


    • Wraith
    "You are a vile ghost, made of evil and darkness. Where ever you go, the air becomes cold and charged with electricity. Your unholy presence scares even the other spirits of Sanctuary."


    • GraveGolem
    "You are a rare and powerful Golem of a dead Necromancer. You were made from the ground of an ancient graveyard. Necromantic energy and souls inhabit you, giving you supernatural strength. You now freely travel across the world, consuming other undead that you find and absorbing their powers."


    • Nightmare
    "You are a shadow, a powerful entity that moves silently and precisely across the night. You possess knowledge of black magic and are able to create poison and curses beyond mortal comprehension."

    Basic Rules:

    There will be some basic undead rules, which will be modified by each character own set of rules. And then, there are Paths and Talents to customize even more!


    • Attributes: Each Character will have a main Attribute. It needs to be raise by at least 2 on each level.
    • Skills: Characters will have a set of skills available. Only those can be used. The skills will be mostly focused on 2 or 3 Class, but cross-class skill usage through item is encouraged.
    • Items: What can be used
      • All consumable items (potions, scrolls).
      • All Ethereal Items.
      • All Runes and Jewels can be used.
      • The rest needs to be specified by the Character choice or Path/Talent choice. (This include Gem usage, Runeword, Set Item, Unique & Crafted Item)
    • Path: After choosing a character, a Path will be chosen (the rule of that Path applies to the Character. (It’s an additional way to customize your character)
    • Talent: After choosing a Path, a Talent will be chosen (the rule of that Talent applies to the Character. (It’s an additional way to customize your character)
    • Mercenary: He shares your faith, which means that he will be allowed to use the same Item that you can use.

    Characters (Description) ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

    Theme: Basic Theme of the Character

    Main Attribute: Needs to be raised by 2 at each level.

    Gem: Other Gems can’t be used to socket your equipment

    Runewords: Other Runewords can’t be used.

    Crafted Items: These Items can be used in addition to what is mentioned in basic rules.

    Specific Words: Items containing any of these words (In their name, item type or runeword name) can be used in addition to what is mentioned in basic rules. (You can be creative here: this works for any Prefix/Suffix, Unique, item modified with Anya, etc.)

    Skills: Any of the listen skills can be used (from Skill Tree, Charges or gained from an Item)

    Vampire ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

    Your focus is on Blood and Mind influencing abilities.

    • Very much like Paths, Talent gives accessibility to more Items. Unlike Paths, it is not a fixed amount of items and can be useful when Crafting or wanting to do very specific Item interactions.
    • Also any skill charge on these items may be used by the Character.

    Bonecrafting ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

    + Can use any* Items with the word “Bone”.

    *(The Item needs to be “Possessed” first, which means that a Perfect Skull or Perfect Gem of the Character type needs to be socketed in that Item to make usable)

    Shadow Affinity ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

    + Can use any* Polearms, Daggers & Crossbows.

    *(The Item needs to be “Possessed” first, which means that a Perfect Skull or Perfect Gem of the Character type needs to be socketed in that Item to make usable)

    Thaumaturgy ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

    + Can use any* Druid Pelts & Sorceress Orbs

    *(The Item needs to be “Possessed” first, which means that a Perfect Skull or Perfect Gem of the Character type needs to be socketed in that Item to make usable)

    + Can also use Poison Potions

    Terror Mastery ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

    + Can use any* item with "Chance To Cast Amplify Damage", "Hit Causes Monsters to Flee" & "Hit Blinds Target".

    *(The Item needs to be “Possessed” first, which means that a Perfect Skull or Perfect Gem of the Character type needs to be socketed in that Item to make usable)

    Scoring, & Rewards

    + 2 points per Quest done
    + 5 points for reaching Nightmare
    + 10 point for reaching Hell
    + 15 points for completing Hell

    + 5 Bonus points for “Purist” run completion (No re-run, same player setting all the time)
    + 5 Bonus points for inclusion of pictures and explanation of the characters journey (max of 5 per difficulty, for a maximum of 15 points. Of course, multiple pictures/description are encouraged even for the same difficulty :D)
    + It could be possible to give some reward points (1-5) to Character that die or finish their journey, if something awesome happen / they are judged remarkable by everyone &/or the roleplaying was excellent. This will need to be voted and is only there to promote fun and dialogue.

    Duration

    I do not intend to give this Tournament any fix duration. If people are interested, it can run for as long as it needs.

    Other basic rules

    These are some last rules, outside of the character limitations.

    1. HC mainly, soft-core is permitted but with retirement on first death.
    2. Rune Word Mod may be used. Diablo should be at the current version (whatever the current is when the person join)
    3. Multiplayer permitted (Undead parties!)
    4. Re-run of Areas is permitted (But you will lose the “Purist” Bonus points)
    5. Player setting can be modified (but don’t abuse please). Also, if it’s changed multiple times, the “Purist” Bonus points will be loss.
    6. Mulling item is permitted, but only OUT.
    7. Replays are allowed.

    If you wish for more information and ruling, don’t hesitate.

    Last Note: Variation, Balance and More fun

    This Tournament wasn’t made with a strict balance in mind. Some choice are probably more powerful than the others, and that’s okay, because the most important part is the journey (don’t forget there’s bonus points for awesome stories ;D ).

    If people want to add Paths or Talents (with a similar approach to mine, to stay on theme) it could be very interesting. Your character (or the Path/Talents) couldn’t be used in the tournament per se, but you could still give feedback, post image, etc. and I’m very sure everyone would like to see.

    This is way too creative. I'm undecided on single pass or not. I had a hard time thinking of a name for a crossbow wielding poison creeping hurricaner, but then i remembered I love super uniques and went with Achmel :) (ranged attack, random poison attacks, and guaranteed freezing if you're near him :) )

    I'm also willing to play with other HC players if they're interested. (nudge nudge coju we need to finish your tournament too lol)

    Edit: I made my fit in the table in 1 line, which I'm guessing is preferred among other players. I'm not good with tables so I'll leave it to someone else if they want to fix it up after a few people have joined or something.

    @pharphis: Are you aware that naming your char AchmelTheGreedy (etc.) will enable you to use your personalization rewards?

    Can a Vampire socket a Ruby in his/her/merc's weapon even though it deals fire damage?

    Also, can charms be used?

    Yes the Vampire can. Sadly for him, his favorite "Blood Stone", the one that also protects it from fire can actually produce some! Luckily for him, he can use others to give himself some appropriate protection :p

    And yes, Charms can be used, but they need to have an appropriate name.

    (Also thanks for the question, I saw a MASSIVE typo on that vampire line >_>)

    Well, cleared Blood raven, the tombs and the cave fully. So far full clear, single pass, /p8. Can't say I've ever bought a Beryl weapon or armor before, but I have every slot with that prefix, aside from rings and ammy which are empty. The merc has beryl armor and an etheral tangerine cap so far. No bow, but I'm not trying very hard to power shop.

    Wasted 25k at lvl 12 w/o any luck gambling boots and gloves with mf. Oh well, hopefully before the act is over.

    All my points have gone into poison creeper, and I'm not sure when I will both putting some into werewolf/lycantropy, but I suppose I should soon.

    I also have ~38 poison resistance, which should help with Andy :)

    Wouldn't it be a good idea to allow Teleport (charges) for Nightmare type characters? After all, it's the speed skill par excellence ...

    Never tried to use a barb with just Grim ward before... Not even natural resistance or a couple of cries?

    If you're referring to the mummy, the main concentration of skills that it can use are from the Druid and Necromancer, but Grim Ward is allowed also since it's on theme and can be found on items (Grim Ward Charges). The skills section represent all the skills usable for that character. You can still make a barbarian if you want but it would be extreme :p

    Now for my progression:

    Johnny punched is way through the blood moor and den of evil. Some nice starting boots were found during the purging of the cave (Eth + Self-repair, hell yeah!).

    After some level the no-weapon problem solved itself: I gambled for a Spiked shield and fortunately it generated "of Spikes" making it legit. It also have a great 5-9 smite damage so the smiting begins (and it gives a nice dark look :D).

    So, if I understand correctly, any vanilla D2 character can be any "Undeadcraft" character type, but they are limited to using the skills listed? If I grasp the concept, you merely sorted each character's skills by vanilla characters for the sake of familiarity?

    As an example, I could play a Vampire built around vanilla's Barbarian, but would be limited to charges and oskills of the Assassin, Necromancer, and Paladin skills listed, correct?

    I dunno how much time I'll have for this...but it looks like too much fun to pass on it! Can't wait to get started. And hopefully choosing reaper will pay off, I'm hoping to find 2 Gulls to hork with. Though having to spend 2 socket quests just for that might be a bad idea...Eh. We'll see if I even find 2 gulls.

    Also I'd love to document Grunkle's journey, but the colors for Diablo II are a bit wacky for me if I try to print screen. I'm currently running it on Windows 7 with these compatibility settings:

    Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
    256 colors
    Run program as admin

    These are unchecked:

    Run in 640x480
    Disable visual themes
    Disable desktop composition
    Disable dsiplay scaling on high DPI settings

    And that's pretty much it. Yet if I try alt-tabbing out and back into D2 the colors change, and if I try to print screen them it looks wrong when I copy it into paint, though everything looks fine while playing. It's very odd, I've never had this problem before. Anyone have any ideas?

    I'd like some clarification on what skills are allowed. For GraveGolem I'm allowed to use Natural Resistance. However, the pre-req for that is Iron skin. Does that mean I can only use the skill Natural Resistance in regard to a Barb class helm giving +1-3 to it? I'm guessing no, but just wanted to be absolutely sure.

    P.S. Just noticed how difficult it's going to be to find any armor until I have a cube to craft some...should make my survival interesting beginning of Act 2, as Act 1 should be fine with just a weapon.

    I have win 7 and have no problems at all: I run "game.exe" with
    windows XP (service pack 3)
    disable dekstop composition
    run program as admin

    IIRC the crucial part to get it to work was "disable desktop composition". Oh, and I play in windowed mode (-w in the command line), don't know if that makes any difference..


    very nice tourney btw! Haven't had one roleplay centered one since Wolron's last tourneys, I think...unfortunately, I still have 10 or 11 tournament characters in progress (even one from the Afterlife tournament and from the tourney before: the obsession tourney), so I won't be able to participate :sad: good luck everyone!

    It used to do the same thing for me. I switched to windowed mode and could take screenshot without a problem (using in game screenshot, just set it up to a key, aka print screen :p). Only "problem" with windowed mode is that it turns of the perspective :p

    Yes you're right; you can put a point in a Skill if it’s a preReq to another (iron skin). But you cannot put additional points in that Skill after that.


    Lol for me it's the inverse :p I have only clothing and a shield so far :p. I'm relying on "Smiting" my enemies down and letting Thorns kill them (Running around fallen to remove my armor bonus so they can kill themself on me is very nice). My Merc is so bad it's hilarious, letting her getting kill with Thorns is actually... good. No love from the Banshee, not even to Merc.
