    Two-handed or Dualwield?

I prefer two-handed weapons in my games, but I was looking at the revealed legendaries on the official site....

It looks like a Barb with 2xLegendary weapons will be much more powerful than a Barb with just 1xLegendary.
What do you think? I don't want to cripple my char just because I prefer a "weak" playstyle.

You were looking at them and saw what, exactly? :scratchchin:

I saw that the 2handed weapons don't have that much more DPS over two 1handed swords.
Ofc that might change with higher legendaries, but I fear they might not balance it right.

    Re: Two-handed or Dualwield?

Bare in mind this is just "what I've picked up" and not facts...

    Duel wield has these benefits:
    Bonus to attack speed
    Faster Fury generation
"wider" stat distribution (i.e. one sword with str another with dex etc)
    "less" overkill

    2handed has these benefits:
Stronger "hits" for skills which use weapon damage
Better Burst (if facing a kiting opponent the DPS for 2handed is higher)
    Only need one of them!
"more" one shots (feels good man!)

When considering how blizzard itemized things for WoW I would assume 2handed weapons get a bigger "budget" than 1 handed weapons. Like, we may find level 60 2handed weapons have +200 str and that 1 handed weapons have +85 str, on average.

If one handed weapons are anything more than marginally better then I think 2handed weapons will get buffed/1handed will be nerfed. Play the style you enjoy playing!

You are aware of the fact that one-handed weapons does need to have, just a ballpark number here, around 80% of the dps of a 2hander in order to stay around the same, yes?

I looked through them quickly and I'd wager that 2handers are, using only the weapon ranges and aps, currently stronger than the 1handers (just as they were when they first announced the items before the rage caused them to take them down).

Edit: there are at least 10 variables I didn't include, so don't hate on my ballpark number.

Did you also look at level requirements when you compared the two weapons?

    Re: Two-handed or Dualwield?

Im partial to either a two handed sword and shield or a big two handed axe but does anyone know if we can wield two handed swords in one hand like D2 ?? Or is it 2 hands needed for a two handed weapons ??

    Re: Two-handed or Dualwield?

Oh, I thought you were talking about two weapons from the beta.

OK, let's see. Azurewrath has on average 367.3 DPS, Warmonger has 503.5. That means that without any additional bonuses and using only normal attack you would do 422.3 DPS if you would dual-wield two Azurewraths, so DW is clearly inferior if you look at it this way.

As you start to look at other stats though things get a fair bit more tricky. For example, damage from primary stats like Strength aren't calculated into the weapon's displayed DPS and so depending on the hidden stats on these two items the damage difference between DW and 2H may change with your class choice.

Skills selection and overkill add another layer of complexity in your decision.

In my experience with the beta, the two combat styles are more or less balanced. With the low HP number of enemies in the starting areas you're better off dual-wielding, since you can oneshot most enemies even this way, so 2-handers become a hindrance because of their slow attack speed. However in multiplayer, where enemy HP is much higher I always go with a 2-hander with my Barb.

2-handers cannot be held in one hand in D3.

    Re: Two-handed or Dualwield?

The (simplistic) answer depends on what you are choosing as your primary single-target skill. If bash, use dual-wield. If frenzy, use 2H.

    Re: Two-handed or Dualwield?

If you are dual wielding and using i.e. frenzy, you´ll be able to get the buffs and fury a lot quicker, since you can stack 15% ias for each weapon swing which also means that you´ll have an increasingly bigger chance to do critical hits aswell(especially when using axes/maces) and thus burst dmg a lot quicker. However, in the end it all depends on the build you are using.

Two-handed weapons feel more " barbaric" for me so as always, I'll go for two handed

Apparently the Frenzy and DW ASPD bonuses do not stack, so 2H is actually/sadly better for most Frenzy builds.

    Re: Two-handed or Dualwield?

I just love the THOUGHT of using a 2-hander, but in practice, I find that the gameplay isn't quite my style :p. I prefer the faster attacks that dual-wielding offers so that, as others have said, I can switch between targets quickly, stuff like Bash procs more often, and there's less 'Overkill'.

I'm very curious to know what builds you guys would think a 2-hander would be good for.

    Re: Two-handed or Dualwield?

They do stack, just not in the way you'd expect. They stack additively, so that with both max Frenzy and dual wielding your base attack speed becomes

    attacks per second * (1 + 0.15 + 0.75) = aps*1.9

This makes the percentage bonus given by frenzy equal to 1.9 / 1.15 = 65%.

This would get even lower if you have increased attack speed from gear or other buffs since it would also be added together with the others before multiplying your base attack speed by it.

I think the ease of maintaining Frenzy stack with two weapons would outweight the benefit of 'not losing' part of the dw ias bonus with 2-hander.
