    The voice acting and dialogue

I just played through the beta 3 times, and I saw all the quest dialogue and some special event dialogue. How did Blizzard manage to make almost every spoken line in the beta cringe-worthy? It's obnoxiously pretentious and naive. The inflections the voice actors make on buzz words like "evil" and "dead" is so ****ing annoying.

My first taste of that teeth grindingly stupid dialogue was from Leah when she was talking about how Cain got pulled into the depths of the cathedral by the meteor. She describes what happened in one or two sentences and about halfway through, her voice starts *rasping* to add unnecessary drama to "he fell in the meteor's crater".

Another part that sticks out on the stupidity meter is King Leoric. He's like a bad cartoon villian all the way up until he actually comes to life and you fight him. Does anyone remember what he was like in Diablo 1? He only said: "The warmth of life has entered my tomb, prepare yourself mortal, to serve my master for eternity" *demonic laugh*. And his delivery of that line was pretty cool, it made me reconsider going into his tomb, especially because I knew so little about him and I had already met The Butcher.

This stuff is my pet-peeve with Diablo 3. I can't get past how stupid most of the dialogue is. Anyone else feel this way?

Its okay, but I really dislike the blacksmith and his reaction to killing is own wife. Its like routine business for him.

Re: The voice acting and dialogue

My favorites from the first epic b.net dialogue thread:

BAD VOICE ACTING AND ATROCIOUS RUNNING ANIMATIONS BAR OUR WAY!

I promised Marco I'd protect him... AND NOW HE'S DEAD!!!

People said my mother was a witch, but I thought they were just *******s.

But haw do aye kill mey own wafe?

You dare bring the warmth of life into my tomb? Prepare yourself, mortal, to...wait, where are you going? Come back!

I AM FREE!!!! AND NOW, BACK TO THE KITCHEN!

This is my room. Do you like it?

Adria was my mother, but I don't know much about her. She died when she lost track of how many we've killed.

Why have you come here bro- the cultists dragged me past this glowing pit...

    HAEDRIG...HELP...ME.....HOOORRRRFFFFFFFFF.

YOU DARE BRING THE WILL OF A TEMPLAR INTO MY TOMB?!

I'VE NEVER SEEN SOMEONE FIGHT LIKE THAT BEFORE! Guards, open the gate and let this unstoppable killing machine wearing only their underwear into our town.

    A wild Jondar appears!
Kormac uses Will of the Templar
    ...
    IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE!

    You were the chosen one!
It was said that you would destroy the cult, not join them!
    You were my brother Jondar!

    Madness?! THIS. IS. JONDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR!

I think the problem is the writing, not VO itself. Okay maybe not counting monks russian accent.

This would be good every once in a while, but not every single line. I can't enjoy it if all of the dialogue is reminiscent of pre-teens trying to LARP.

I find Leoric dialogue quite cheesy, a little too fancy, but there are many other mini bosses in the game to look forward to.

Re: The voice acting and dialogue

Diablo 3 really needs some convincingly uber-actored lines such as Diablo 1's sorcerer's "Your death.... WILL BE AVENGED!!!"

Re: The voice acting and dialogue

The problem with D3 writing is that there is no idea behind it. Consider a classic like Umberto Eco's "Name of the rose" book. At the surface, it's a medieval crime story in a monastery setting. However, Eco pushed many deep philosophical ideas behind the lines. This makes the book much deeper that it initially appears. In D3 there is no depth. Leoric is just a generic bad guy. There is no deep idea behind Leoric's personality. He is just the Lich King from WoW, remade into a Diablo villian. It's boring as hell. This type of writing is good for 12yo boys. It's lame for adults. Leoric reminds me Gargamel from Smurfs. So one-dimensional evil it's funny. XD

The voice acting and dialogue was a major let down. I'm baffeled.

This is probably my favorite in the entire beta. It makes me laugh out loud every single time.

If you can't spend the time on proper voice acting and dialogue, then at least make what you do have effective.

    The dialogue is atrocious, yes.

It's a basic, amateur writing mistake called "frigidity".

Re: The voice acting and dialogue

the reviews can give it a 1 and i will still play and love it. why do people care about reviews anyway? like i said in the other thread, if the voice acting is the worst thing you can come up with then D3 is miles beyond any other game
