The Vizjereic Key of Horazon - Art collaboration.

Okay, here's the skinny. After writing up the character of Malphas in the Diablo Universe, I touched upon the idea of demons and fallen angels bound to Vizjereic seals, in imitation of medieval demonological grimoires such as the Lesser Key of Solomon or the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum. I decided to explore the idea further, and started writing a list incorporating all the other summonable demons mentioned in these texts, reworking them into the Diablo universe. Out of boredom, or anticipation? I dunno. Anyway, I'm going to post the list of them here.

At this point, I don't know how interested people would be, but I rather like the idea of doing a sort of collaboration, where anyone who feels up to it might like to add to the Key of Horazon, either by drawing a picture of whichever demon sounds fun to them, or by expanding on that demon's background, or incorporating them into their own pieces of fan fiction. It's a fairly long list, and I haven't finished outlining all the spirits yet, but anyone who cares to google the entries will find a wealth of information and old drawings, since the Ars Goetia has been around for centuries.

Anyway, I think it would be really cool if it gets off the ground, but that depends on how intriguing the general idea is. I'd be delighted to hear any feedback or suggestions. The List below will be updated with any new input as it comes.

Great stuff, would be cool if someone can draw some of these creatures

BTW are some of the entries taken from the Dictionnaire Infernal?

The Dictionnaire Infernal lists largely the same spirits, but in a different order and with some additions and subtractions. The only one here from the Dictionnaire is the first entry, Zaphan (from Xaphan), replacing the entry for Baal from the Ars Goetia.

Added some sketches for the first eight spirits.

Alright, I've decided to make the Key of Solomon look more like a book, and have revised the first couple of entries accordingly. I'm hoping to hear from folks who want to chip in and draw any of the other 70-something spirits, but if not, I suppose I'll gradually keep adding pages until the whole thing is done.

That's some top notch artwork. Blizzard should hire you for their next Book of Cain style project.

Thanks, that's terribly flattering! I'd very much like to see some other artists pitching in, though. There's plenty to go around. I've tried to incorporate representatives for as many monsters from Diablo and Diablo II as I could.

Re: The Vizjereic Key of Horazon - Art collaboration.

Some little patterns I've tried to include:

I've adapted several Super Uniques from the games, expanding on their position in Hell's hierarchy. For example, The three spirits summoned by activating the seal in the Chaos Sanctuary are included in the Key as three of the five lieutenants of Diablo (Ventar, Lord De Seis and the Grand Vizier of Chaos, whom I've identified with Decarabia/De Carabia for symmetry with De Seis). I figured that two of the seals summoned nothing because those two lieutenants were already incapacitated (Assur from the Demonsbane novel; and Run Azar, Veshkin7Bukito's creation).

Baal also has five lieutenants in the Key, which represent the five elite monsters summoned by Baal in the expansion (except for Bartuc the Bloody, since if he was the same as Horazon's brother Bartuc, then the Key would've been written well before his demise. So I made Apellyon Bartuc's predecessor).

The bonus hell levels from the expansion I've reworked as Baronies of Baal, with the pit of Abaddon becoming the domain of Apellyon (Abaddon in Greek is Apollon), the pit of Acheron going to Colenzo and the Infernal Pit going to Lister (I've named it Dis here, after a Latin term for the underworld). Unseen baronies include Mastema for Achmel the Cursed (since Achmel is an Egyptian mummy, I used the name of Egypt's guardian fallen angel, Mastema) and Megiddo for Ventar the Unholy (I've renamed Megademons Megiddons, referencing Armageddon/Har Megiddo, so I suppose they're native to Ventar's Barony of Megiddo).

There are three spirits which I've labelled Evil Forces - Abigor, Bu-Nephra and Achmel - each serving one of the Prime Evils (remember the Evil Forces from the Durance of Hate when battling Mephisto?). I've theorized that Evil Forces are the insubstantial spirits possessing certain soulless monsters in the game (Mummies, Greater Mummies, Frozen Horrors, possibly Corrupted Rogues considering their death animations). Bu-Nephra I've equated with Ancient Kaa the Soulless.

In the Key, the angels and demons who created Sanctuary have been labelled Demiurges (Gnostic mythology has the Demiurge, or Builder, as the fallible creator of the imperfect physical world) or Elohem (from Elohim; 'gods' or 'Great God' in Hebrew). Bear in mind that this is my fanon, not canon. As for the Overlords, they're a bit tricky. I've tried to reconcile their flavour text in Diablo 1 (as being Fallen Angels) with this Key, even though there are continuity issues with the whole Inarius and Mephisto thing. I've gone with the obscure theory that Kabraxis was the one who tricked certain Demiurges over to Mephisto's side.

The legions serving the Fallen Angels are sprites or nature spirits rather then demons, and come in two varieties: elemental spirits and animal spirits. Note that just because they are called spirits does not mean they are intangible, since angels and demons are technically spirits as well. These are probably the spirits that Druids interact with, not including the plant-based spirits used for in-game skills, which probably belong to Demiurges not included among the Animae Vizjereica.

Elementals include the Sagians of Vassago (air sprites), Djinni of Iblis (earth sprites), Efreeti of Phoenix (fire sprites) and Marids of Krosiel (water sprites). These are based on Arabic genies, loosely. Animal spirits include Malpheans (crow spirits), Marchosians (wolf spirits) and Lacuni (saber cats). Demonic Demiurges are also responsible for animal spirits, but these are classified as demons and include monsters from Diablo II. Examples include the Agareans of Agares (Frog Demons), Blood Lords of Marax (Minotaurs), the Children of Astrogha (Spider Demons) and the Khazra of Zagraal (Goatmen). The latter is a special case, being identified with mutated Umbaru. I'm walking a fine line with Zagraal here, since whatever information I include about him might be contradicted in Diablo 3.

Monsters I added that have no in-game equivalents include the Hellhounds (demonic dogs, obviously, though only Naberius is three-headed like Cerberus), Stalker Demons (freaky stork-like creatures with massive owl-eyes), Nightmare Steeds (for demon knights to ride on), Leviathans (every fantasy ocean needs sea monsters) and Tartaruchi (punisher demons. I imagine them as resembling humanoids made of oil or tar, covered in silver chains, nails, spikes and other self-mutilations.

I have a soft-spot for the Fallen. Don't we all? Perhaps that explains why so many of them are in the Key. I made sure to include the three superuniques from Diablo 2, Bishibosh of the Fallen Ones, Rakanishu of the Carvers and Colenzo of the Warped Ones. Added to this are Zaphan of the Dark Ones, and Barbatos of the Devilkin. So all the tribes from D2 are represented. (Sorta. Zaphan is a Fallen One, but leads a tribe of Dark Ones).
