    Stupid questions? Smart answers!

Just started playing Diablo 2 last week. I had never heard of the game until I saw a plug for Diablo 3. After getting it to work on my Win 7 machine, I have been having non-stop fun. I am currently in Act 2 and just about to finish it playing as a barbarian. Level 20 I think. I do have a couple of questions, so please be kind with the answers.

    1. How do you configure your mouse to get the most out of it while in battle? I get the right click, left click, but what about the scroll bar or side bar? I dislike having to touch the keyboard, but I don't see any other way to play this game.

    2. Best time to save? I noticed that if I save and exit, the monsters reset themselves. So does this mean the best time to save is at a way-point or after I have completed a quest, or both?

    3. Should I be doing "magic finding" at my level? I can't find a decent sword and I only seem to get items for mages when I do kill a boss or mini boss. Nothing pisses me off more than getting a wand with 10,000 gold that I can't use. :)

    4. Should I keep these unique or rare items? I only play single player, but am hoping to run through again using a few more players, like necro or paladin. Can I use the items that I find with my barbarian for my necro?

Yeah, I am totally addicted to this game and am having so much fun. I can't believe that I could have been playing this game 10 years ago. Wow, did I miss out or what? BTW, I only play a couple of hours a night a few days a week, so it may take me months to get through this game with a Barbarian. Thanks in advance for your answers and your patience.

    Re: Stupid questions? Smart answers!

    1. The scroll wheel can be used to cycle through skills, but I've found better success assigning hot keys to the keyboard.
    2. When questing, I prefer to save and exit after reaching a new waypoint. Once I've finished the game (killing Baal on Hell difficulty), I tend to focus on running either bosses or certain areas, and save and exit after each run.
    3. Yes. Or run the Countess at your level for runes. The runeword 'Steel' would be a big help to you, I'm thinking.
    4. Yes. You should go to the Single Player Forum and download either ATMA or GoMule. Each allows you to keep nearly infinite stashes, as well as transfer items between characters. There is also a Multiplayer subforum, for those who wish to multiplay with their Single Player characters. I prefer Single Player play myself.

Edit: One of the biggest advantages of Single Player is that you can manipulate the difficult of the game. For example, you can hit Enter and type '/playersx', without the quotations, and where x is a number from one to eight. This will simulate having additional players in the game, which makes monsters tougher, but also increases the experience you get from them and the number of items they drop.

If you haven't updated the version you're playing to 1.13, you may want to connect to battle.net to update. Transhaw's version switcher is also available for download at the Single Player Forum, which allows you to switch between patch releases.

Most of all, I'm glad you're having fun, and I welcome you to these forums!

    Welcome!

Just as noodle sugeests: come to the SPF! Great community and tons of knowledge about the game.

To the MF question: I wouldn't do that so early. A lot of people (not myself) run baal in act 5 before entering nightmare difficulty to gain extra lvls - this can of course also upgrade your items a bit. If you are looking for better gear I can suggest the runeword "Steel" just as Noodle. Also, when I go untwinked (only using the items you find") I always hire an act 2 mercenary and equip him with a cubed savage polearm (cube this by putting any staff+any diamond+a kris+a light belt in the horadric cube)

There is also a Single Player Trading Forum where vou can trade for better gear. Be sure to thorougly read the rules first, though.

Often some of the members hosts giveaways as well, which I myself found very useful when I started out.

    Re: Stupid questions? Smart answers!

Thanks so much. That is exactly what I was looking for.

I will head to the SPF after I have read this this newbie forum. I need to research what "runewords" are and cubing recipes.

Those mods seem to be exactly what I need as far as storage goes. I have no idea what to keep as far as chipped gems, skulls etc., so I just sold them. And any item I can't use with my barb gets sold also. At least I am only starting act 3, so I probably haven't sold too many good things.

    I did upgrade to 1.13.

Thanks so much for all your help. I am sure I will be back. :)

P.S. I found my first green item last night. Yeah, I peed my pants a little in happiness.

Glad you are enjoying it :)

    Cubing

    Runewords

Atma and gomule are two very useful programs indeed.
You should keep gems and skulls as they can be upgraded by using the horadric cube (3*chipped rubies=1*flawed ruby, 3*flawed rubies=ruby... etc).

    Re: Stupid questions? Smart answers!

Thanks everyone for the help. I have to tell you, I am having a blast. The game is strangely addictive, but since you all have joined a forum dedicated to the game, I am sure you already know that. :)

Now if I could just get GoMule to work, I would be set. I posted in the SPF and no one has answered my questions. D2 just seems like it wasn't meant to run on Win7 and GoMule is the same way. I hate throwing things away, but it is nearly impossible to do without having a stash program.

As far as "fresh meat", I will admit one horrible screw up I made...
I saved my lvl 30 Barb, then deleted D2 and reinstalled it away from my Program Files folder. Then I reloaded D2, pasted my "Saved" folder to the new D2 install. I then loaded the game without updating to 1.13 and my level 30 Barb became a level 8 Barb. Fresh Meat is correct!!!

Hey guys I have a question.
Do skellies get the bonuses of summon necro's items.
For example the necro is wearing a shield that has 50% chance of open wounds, would the skellies receive that bonus?
    Thanks

Sry to hear about that - but glad you are enjoying the game. If you can't get gomule to work (I never could) try Atma. In my experience it works great.

    Re: Stupid questions? Smart answers!

Fred, I got it to work last night. I thought of myself as "good" on computers until windows 7 came out, now I am below average.

When I downloaded the zip file, I was assuming (incorrectly) that windows would extract all the files automatically. Once I extracted the files, it worked like a charm. I can't believe how cool it is. I created one of every character and can transfer them items that are specific to their type.

One more question: Does the selling price of an item determine how good the item is? It seems I have found some items that I thought were much better than what I was currently carrying, but they were only worth a portion of my current item.

Again, thanks to everyone for being so cool. That is a rarity on the interwebz these days!!!

Hmm... One thing that really helped me after a 5 year absence was remapping the hotkeys to the letter-keys instead of the Fkeys.

If you go ahead and do it, being new to the game, you'll be used to it starting out.

IE: qwert/asdf/zxc for skills. I put Quest (q) to Y, Skill Tab (t) to U, LCS (c) to G, Inventory on B. They're something like that. I keep my hand on the homekeys and can pretty much click everything I need in battles and what nots.

Good luck! Have fun! Glad you finally found this addictive, cough cough, Great game!

    Re: Stupid questions? Smart answers!

No the price of the items usually don't have a lot to do with the usefullness of the items. Things that I think makes a item worth a lot of gold is staffmods (+skills), durability, and special suffixes and prefixes like of greed, replenish life and some other stuff. What items you should use should not be decided by the price :)

Doesn´t work for the skellies, but if the Necromancer makes an Iron Golem out of the shield (only works with a shield made of metal), the Iron Golem would get 50% Open Wounds on its attacks.

I guess I had better check out the hot key scenario and see if that will work for me. The only one I use is "I" for inventory.

BTW, has there been a class action lawsuit against Blizzard yet? I am sure carpal tunnel is going to be setting in any moment now. :)

    Hotkeys work awesome. Thanks again.

Another noob question....How do I tell the difference between rare and unique items? The wiki says it is yellow vs gold, but the only item that drops in Gold color are the runes. Maybe I am not at a high enough level? I am a level 39 barb who is still in act 1 of the nightmare level.

    Ah :)

    well normally it goes:

    unique: gold
    rare: yellow
    runes/crafts: orange

    Here are some examples:

    Unique color:

    Rare color:

    Rune/craft color:

Edit: for some reason I can't get the pictures to work. You can press the links though, they should be safe :)

    Re: Stupid questions? Smart answers!

    fred,
Do you have a mod that changes the Rune/Craft that color? I have never seen that color you posted in the last pic.

Also, thanks for posting pics. The difference is very clear. I assumed they looked different while they were on the ground, but maybe I am just so excited to pickup something other than Blue/White/Grey that I don't notice a difference.

On another note, I can't believe how consuming this game is. It is so fun to play. Let's face it, the game is so old that I should have no desire to play it, but just the opposite happened. Once I got GoMule working, I have been keeping everything so I can twink my next character. I bet I have saved so much worthless crap that one day I will have to look back and laugh. It's all about the next drop!!!

Do you guys remember the first time playing the game? That is the feeling I have right now AND I get to use all the resources possible so I don't die all the time. Yeah, I do die though. Duriel killed me at least 10 times. Diablo killed me at least 15 times. (I didn't realize you could open a town portal and run through it to avoid dying and resurrect my moron). Baal killed me twice and that was because there were two of him and I didn't know which one to focus my attacks on.

Thanks again for the patience and the noob questions!!!!

    Re: Stupid questions? Smart answers!

Runes were white until the 1.13 patch, which changed them to orange.

When facing Baal and his clone, the real Baal is the one whose name is slightly offset when you put your cursor on him. For example:

    Baal
    Demon

    That would be the clone.

    Baal
    _Demon.
That's the real deal. (Except it won't be underlined.)

Yeah, are you sure you've got patch 1.13c installed?

I haven't played for more than a year and half, so I very much remember the feeling :)
