I'm lvl 64 in Act 2 of Hell mode now. My problem is that with my current build/gear/whatever, I can't kill anything in the act so that I can raise my first skeleton. I hire a combat merc, raise a clay golem, cast amp, and it still takes the three of us me an HOUR (using Teeth too) to kill 1 mob. I ran into similar problems killing a first mob in Act 4 in Normal and Nightmare because there are no mercs in Act 4; it took about 15 minutes of hacking at a single mob to finally kill it.

Can you please give me some tips on what I'm doing wrong--gear/tactics/build? I have 8 talent points and 71 stat points at my disposal right now. Here's my build:

    Summoning:
    20 Raise Skeleton (RS)
    20 Skeleton Mastery (SM)
    1 Clay Golem
    2 Golem Mastery
    2 Summon Resist (SR)

    Poison & Bone:
    1 Teeth
    15 Corpse Explosion (CE)

    Curses:
    1 Amplify Damage (Amp)
    1 Weaken
    1 Terror
    1 Decrepify (Decrep)

You need some skill that deals at least half-decent damage in order to kill the first monster. I'd suggest you sink 20 hard points in Bone Spear (or Bone Spirit if you prefer). As you have your points now, you have too much in CE relative to what you have in other skills. More points in CE is always nice, but you need to strike a balance between CE-radius and ability to get the first corpse. It is better to loose some 5s on every pack than to struggle for hours to no avail before you get the first skeleton up.

That helps a lot. Bone Spear is great for it. Thanks!

May I also suggest a stronger weapon for your merc. I do not know what you have equip him with, but if you are able to give him some additional help in the damage dealing department, perhaps a weapon or helm that adds crushing blow to bring the health of a mob/boss down faster; that may also help speed things up. Orphan's Call set helm or Rattlecage armor perhaps?

Don't sink points into bone spear. Just keep grinding normal worldstone keep until you get a decent merc weapon or go on the trading forums and trade for something with crushing blow.

Also, you have the wrong merc. As a summoner, you want to get a nightmare offensive merc for the might aura. If you disagree with that based on a study of that trade-off then never mind.

there is no equipable merc in classic. also they don´t stay once you leave the act you hired them in. no wsk either

i would sink a few points into attract if i were you. gather two or three monsters and curse one with attract and either IM or AMP the others. they should kill each other fairly quickly (preferably no ranged ones)

or go the bone route, but with only 10-15 points to spend...never tried, but might work

You're also underleveled for Hell. I don't enter Hell until I'm at least level 75. I'd go back and do some Nightmare Baal runs to level up. It won't help you directly, but it'll make it much easier for your merc to get that all-important first kill if he's closer to the monster's level.

Thanks for the additional feedback. I appreciate it. Yea, I've just got Classic D2 (as I guess I should have called it). Sorry for the confusion.

I sunk some points into Bone Spear, and that helped a lot with the first kill. Attract sounds like it might be fun, too. I'll try that out once I get my next few skill points.

one more question though: which patch version are your discs? 1.00, 1.06, 1.12?

there have been significant changes in the patches, so things might be different

Id get a wand with attract and use that if you dont want to waste skill points. Act 4 hell will be tough for your skeletons :/

In Classic I would use Bone Spirit rather than spear. Spirit does much more damage, and thats important when raising an army or killing Diablo. Also I know what everyone is saying about the radius of CE. But if your amp has a low radius CE is less effective. I would personally balance it out so I had maybe 10 points in CE and then use 20 in spirit and 15 in Bone Wall/Prison and of course 20 in RS and SM. Oh and unless you have a rare necro wand with + 3 BS, I would use umes. It saves you points to Decrepify.

You could use the Waypoint in Lut Gholein to travel to the Rogue Encampment, kill some Fallen, and use them. It's annoying but it'll take a lot less than an hour.

i guess you mean bone spirit, but tier 6 staffmods (aka lvl 30 skill staff mods) don´t exist in classic

summons won´t travel from one act to the other in classic. you have to raise them in the act in which you would like to play

Krupa must be the only one who has played classic, lol.

I made a classic ladder run with a necro maybe about 5 or 6 years ago. I max's skele warriors, skele mastery, CE, 1 to attract, 1 to decrep, and a handful in amp damage. After that I think I started boosting either fire golem or golem mastery. I was able to get to about lvl 90, and break the top 10 on the ladder necros, but it was really slow to get armies started up solo. I quit when I found out people were using an act5 in classic hack.

I would go to the river of flame waypoint, and hope for little cockroaches to spawn, or the little flesh beasts. Cast attract on those small guys, and cast confuse on the rest of the monsters. Eventually the big monsters will kill the little ones and provide some corpses. Those corpse devouring demons get really annoying when doing this. Act 1-3 aren't quite as bad because you can hire a merc, even though they don't do a whole lot of damage. Use the same strategy of attract curse on a small monster. Faster run/walk boots really helps while you are trying to survive getting your army built. Some people like to max dim vision curse too. Iron maiden, or Thorns Golem +amp can work nice in combination of attract curse as well.

Damric: I played Classic as well. Just asumed you would be able to gain + skills to all tiers. No wonder I never saw a lvl 30 skill :)

It is because of the slow raising of armies I recommend Bone Spirit. It really helps a lot. Ones you have raised 3 or 4 skellies your army starts kicking but :)

Re: Raising an army in Hell mode as Fishymancer (non-expansion) der=0>

I havent played classic since expansion was out, but why wouldnt you use some confuse/attract tricks to let the mobs do the first kill? Kinda worked at some point.

 looked at topic date, sorry (=
