Blue post about character appearance customization that asks a bunch of questions and might be of interest to you guys. The OP mentions how cool some of the two-handed weapons look and how lame it is that characters never get to equip them, and Grimiku's reply aims to redirect the conversation:

In WoW it's called transmogrification, and the ability to visually customize your character adds a layer of depth to the game that a lot of players enjoy. We think it would be cool to implement something like that in Diablo III at some point, but a feature like this has some details to iron out first.

We'd like to hear your feedback on some of the options you'd want to see in a feature that enabled you to visually customize your character. Some great examples of questions to get you started are: Would you like to have cosmetic slots on your character sheet? Would you prefer a system where you have a npc make an item look like a different item? Should weapons be included? Should weapons be limited to the same weapon types if they are included?

I didn't want to raise my arms anyway.

Blizzard has asked about this a number of times in the past so it's clearly something they're working on for the future of Diablo 3. To be honest, I don't really care. I obsess over my char's gear, but that's in terms of the numbers and the function; not the look or color. At least not very much; I have used Invisible Dye on Grim Ward shoulders a few times, since the big spiky horns poke up so much they look stupid with some other gear.

Generally though, I don't care about armor look or color... but Diablo 3 isn't just about me. Other people have other opinions and desires, and I'm wondering how many of you guys are into this, want it, need it, crave it? Or is it much less of a priority, but you'd use it if you had it? Or do you not want it, not just since you wouldn't use it, but since other players would to make their chars look stupid or silly?

Yeah, it is pretty dumb for them to have made all those item tiered sets from 1-60 when the only thing long-term players see is the level 62-63 sets/legendaries. I'd also like to replace my Tal's robe with something less humiliatingly stupid-looking on my female wiz.

    But...

Of all the things that need changing, this is near the last thing on the list. The game should actually be fun to play before it should be fun to customize.

I'll go ahead and get this out of the way: WoWsucksD3sucksBlizzardsuckseverythingsucks. There. It's been done.

This is like another stupid distraction. Reminds me of the joke people were making about the gamescom announcement which would be "A BRAND NEW WALLPAPER!!1" Because blizzard likes to make a big deal about stupid **** noone gives a rats *** about except for people that like farmville and other stupid ****. They pander to this kind of crap.

Ok I'll try to be constructive here. I think super rare legendary type items that have really unique looks should be able to be mimic'd by any other lower weapon. I think there should be a selection of "looks" that rare weapons and rare armor can be chosen from. I'd say a legendary weapon could be "down graded" to look like something else but a lower weapon cannot look like a high level legendary.

I think super rare legendary type items that have really unique looks should *NOT NOT NOT* be able to be mimic’d by any other lower weapon.

It actually annoys me that they are wasting time on stuff like this when the game has so many glaring issues that need fixing, for example - it's not fun.

Of all the dire lack of character customization issues that this game has they are touting visual/cosmetic changes? Really?

well Path of Exile sells this stuff and I see it on a LOT of players

so Blizzard could be looking at a way to make money other than the RMAH

everything POE sells is cosmetic (except extra inventory space), but people buy that stuff like crazy

there's a skill that allows you to cast sparks of lightning : you can buy a cosmetic effect that makes the sparks look like little lightning spiders; its a pretty cool effect, seeing these little spiders darting around shocking monsters

there's a skill that allows you to cast a small pillar of ice that shoots up out of the ground and freezes the monsters in place : you can buy a cosmetic effect that makes the pillar look like a giant hand/claw of ice that reaches up and grabs the monster

I'd never buy it, but I gotta admit, it looks really cool

you can buy fiery glow effects for weapons, "holy" glow effects for your headgear, all kinds of junk that I see lots of people having

side note: still have to play the video and answer the question every single time I try to post
but only on my desktop, my laptop has no problem logging in to this site and being remembered

Let me change my iLvl 63 "rare pants" appearance to that of another rare pants, please. I thought that's why they were all generically named "rare ____" in the first place - so we could do such things.

Also, appearance matters to me. So much so that it is a decider in my end game gear. I can find a tiny bit of enjoyment in trying to put together good gear while also having a cohesive and cool look. Although when I can't find a configuration that fulfills both, it gets frustrating.

While it's mostly silly kid stuff, I like the idea of character individuality, as in me being able to tell my toon apart in a group of the same class.

Since we're pretty much pigeon holed into using the same legendaries in inferno, using dyes on leges and even transmog may be a nice addon.

What would be even more interesting, and GGG implemented successfully in PoE, is custom effects for spells and weapons. If these were linked to paragon progression, as bonuses (as permanent decisions, why not) it might bring back some of the customization people miss from D2.

While I'm definitely not opposed to this, surely there are much more pressing issues that Blizz should be working. How about instead of making our stuff LOOK different, add more actual items to the endgame that give legitimate and meaningful choices to both appearance and play style?

To think that they are spending time on such things, when the game needs many other vital fixes since the release ... If you want such feature, do it, no problem for me (even if I will surely not use it), but only after the game will be finally very fun and challenging to play. Thanks!

The problem about the visual aspect of the items is not their apparence but, as someone has mentioned before, the itemization itself since only lvl 62 and lvl 63 items are worth something. That's why the 90-95% of game items will be never seen on a character after he starts (to farm) Inferno.
And making basically all the skills DPS depending and their lack of any kind of depth/customization, doesn't make the things better. But Blizzard have reached something with this, that all charachters of the same class are the same (stats and skills) once leveled up and that they will look basically the same (in the very end, the gear that matters is largely accessibile thanks to the AH). Only self found characters can look differently, but after a while even they start to look more or less like any other end game character.

So, fix the core issues of the game and you will fix at the same time other (much less important) issues like the Visual Character Customization.

Nothing cringeworthy?? Did you ever reach level 60??? Who gives a sh*t if I wanna run around lookin a little low-ish level. You do? F*ck you then. Lemme do what I want to do and stop gettin your panties in a bunch over it. There\'re tons of vanishing-dyed \'toons\' runnin around naked lookin already, anyway. And secondly, why would it make sense for people to dye or \'transmogrify\' their stuff into higher level gear anyways? It doesn\'t.

It\'s not that they would need to make entire new system to that, more like expand die system. In case of non legendary, if you could change look to any tier lower than items actual, I\'m all for that.

That\'s because PoE is awesome game, and buying cosmetics is just a final layer on top of a great game.

You can\'t yet, though they keep saying they\'re working on that for the future since legendaries have unique textures and such and it requires individual attention from the artists, rather than just a palette shift.

You can use disappearing dye on them, though. So they\'re on or off, but not adjustable, yet.

I convinced myself that Lacunis + rare pants are better than rare bracers (I'm bad at crafting) + inna's pants and used Vanishing Dye on Ice Climbers. I have more EHP now due to my fashion stress...

Please, drop white or black ink on my blue suede shoes...

Doesn't matter quite as much, but mostly I agree. If you're spending 1000+ hours playing a character, customization is a nice bonus.

I\'m almost positive it was intended to be a Mystic function.

And I\'m almost positive it\'s still intended to be a Mystic function.

PoE is also a F2P game and a cosmetic shop is perfectly reasonable.
Hopefully they aren\'t considering more monetisation in a game that already sells at a rrp higher than most other games and in such huge numbers.
