Error 25: A critical error has occurred while initializing Direct3D

I played D2:LoD last night, but today I get this error. Googling didn't turn up any useful info though, running videotest again finds no graphics cards at all, reinstalling video drivers doesn't solve it either. Anyone have this problem suddenly pop up, perhaps an automatic windows update has broken something?

run dxdiag and make sure d3d and ddraw are enabled and it can run the tests on the display tab

Looks like "DirectDraw Acceleration" is "Not Available" for some reason now, Direct3D Acceleration is enabled though. All the DirectDraw tests pass when I run the test though, wonder why it is not available.

I get an error when running the Direct3D Acceleration test, "Direct3D 7 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8007000e (Out of memory)" but then dxdiag says all Direct3D tests passed, hmm :)

Are you receiving a message saying: (Any error that occurs when starting the game) (PC)

error 1: Diablo II is unable to proceed. Please run D2VidTst and try again.
error 21: A critical error has occurred while initializing windowed mode.
error 22: A critical error has occurred while initializing DirectDraw.
error 23: A critical error has occurred while initializing Glide.
error 24: A critical error has occurred while initializing OpenGL.
error 25: A critical error has occurred while initializing Direct3D.

    Steps to solve these problems:

    - Rerun the Diablo II Video test program.
    - Download and install updated video and sound drivers and the DirectX program. Additional information located on the Driver update information page.
    - If problems persist, run the Video Test program and set the video mode to Direct Draw.

Have you tried restarting the computer?

I had that happen a few times. Video card was a nVidia GeForece 2 MX 400,
and it happend just after I had upgraded to DirectX 9.0 via automatic updates. I also noticed that other games frame rates were cut in half.

So! once you upgrade to DirectX 9, you cannot down grade?

NOT! I found a program called DXERadicator, that basically deleted all files, and registry keys. I just had downloaded, DX8.1Eng and installed it, then updated it, to DirectX 8.1a, and the security patch.

Then I re-ran DXDiag, running through EVERY test, and then re-ran vidtest. Diablo IIs frame rates and funcationality returned to normal. I was getting 24 tp 36 fps before direct X 9, then I got 12 to 18, and now its back to 24 to 36 again. I think the part that helped the most is RERUN VIDTEST.

Most important for diagnostics is what kind of video card do you have, and what OS?
