Double Pat and play through Roethlisberger and Keelin

    Guess I have to write something since I took the screen shot..

    Awhile back myself and Jason Maher, decided to do a play through. Despite one really early death a few bad judgement deaths from us both and some really buggy beetles, it all went pretty smoothly. He played a Double Swing Barb, Roethlisberger. I thought why not go for a smiter, Keelin, and we were off. We played P8 the entire trip and pretty much mowed through the game. That was mostly due to his crazy gear. But enough of that, heres my build.


    I went pure Smiter. 20 Smite, 20 Holy shield, 20 Defience, and 20 fanaticism. The rest not that there were many went into 1 point zeal and Holy Shock.


    The thing that stood out the most, at least to me, was the defense on this guy. He had 27,646 defense just with holy shield. When Fortitudes Chilling armor went off it knocked it up to 30,656. With Roethlisberger's Shout it went up to 41,183.

    So with Smite the LCS damage redout lies even more than usual. The added damage from grief doesnt show or the Bonus from Fort's ed%.

    As far as playing goes, its fairly strait forward. Run up ignore everything hitting you because its not really hurting you and even if it is, life tap will go off soon enough. While your doing that smash everythings face off with your shield.

    I have decided that I disagree with the premise that Smite has no use outside of B Net Ubers. PI's are a pain, and it isnt the fastest killer out there. But its very safe, and can kill in hell on players 8, thats good enough for me!

    Despite my best attempts to arrange a sneaky swapping of Griefs when he wasn't looking, I was never able to pull it off (mine is +348 and 36 IAS). We certainly had a lot of fun, including laughing at each other's deaths. I'll add all the useful bits of info about my guy later. The name was chosen because: a) I'm a Steelers fan; and b) I wanted it to stand out among my other characters in ATMA (due to having a really long name, which I don't normally do).

    Congratulations. I agree with you about Smite, it's a good all-round skill. Sure it's single-target, but so are normal attack, Berserk, Vengeance, Concentrate, and numerous others. Most of those aren't auto-hit like Smite, though- this makes it great on a cleric sort of build that would otherwise have big trouble hitting stuff.

    The only thing I was puzzled about was the Exile in a non-ethereal base. It seems a waste of the runes, because you could have got so much more for the same price, rune-wise.

    Yes I know and I would have preferred eth 45 all res, But I didnt have one. Yea auto hit goes a long ways in making it a much better single-target skill.

    It's a pity they don't have a way to recover socketables from items. I'd even be happy with the mechanism used by Torchlight or Fate, where one NPC in town will smash the gems and recover the item, while another will smash the item and recover the gems. They could even have a once-per-playthrough thing, by replacing one of the unused merc quests in LoD. I mean, how many people get the Gidbinn or rescue the barbarians before killing Blood Raven?

    Most useless IMO quest reward is in Act5. Why do I really want to name a item?

    For style points?
    Smite isn't bad, but it knocks back the monsters which is really annoying, that's why I like it only vs act bosses and such.

    thats not a problem really and times more than a little useful. If the monster is up against another montster it doesnt move. or against a wall, also if its between you and your moron. And when you need some space its nice to knock them out of the way and since there stunned there out of the way and not moving. Not just for style points I really enjoyed the build all the way through the game.

    Meh, sometimes people like it, particularly if you find an item you really associate with one of your characters. I've used it a few times myself. Still, I get your point- it's generally useless from a game mechanics perspective. However, the extra merc rewards are completely useless in LoD; once you hire one/get one as a reward, all of the others- in every difficulty!- give you absolutely nothing. I don't even know if Qual-Kehk gives out a free hireling, as I've always had one before doing the quest.

    In classic, obviously the rewards can be of limited use. However, in classic, there's also little need to unsocket your stuff. You don't have any uber-rare socketables that you want to recover, nor any uber-equipment that could do with an upgrade of its socketables. Lastly, and most importantly, the only socketables available offer fixed bonuses[SUP]1[/SUP] and there are no runewords, so you have no need to 'reroll' something.

    @zaphodbrx: The knockback can be annoying at times, but I'd rather have it all the time than none of the time. Keep in mind a nice side-effect is that it forces hit recovery. With a fast enough attack, you can pin pretty much anything but an act boss, Griswold, or Izual up against a wall and keep it stun-locked.

    1) If I recall, in a very early version of classic, gems offered variable bonuses within a range. These were later fixed at the top end of the range of values.

    Okie dokie, here's the numbers on Roethlisberger.

    LCS (without smilts' Fana aura)

    Calculated damage:

    1.07 Oath Balrog Blade = [93-534 (weapon) + 0-53 (+min/max)] x [1 + 2.57 (str) + 2 (bash) + 2.1 (moron) + 2.29 (fana) + 1.58 (mastery) + 3 (fort)]
    = [93-587] x [14.54]
    = 1352 - 8534

    Grief Phaseblade = [31-35 (weapon) + 348-348 (+damage) + 0-53 (+min/max)] x [14.54]
    = [379-436] x [14.54]
    = 5510 - 6339

    Pretty decent damage, @5.5 frames (5 with smilts' fana), with 31% CS from Sword Mastery, 15% DS from Gores, a further 20% DS on Grief, 15% CB and 10% OW from Gores, a wee bit of elemental damage, and level 15 Venom from Grief. In addition there's a total of 382% damage to Demons (543% for Grief), and 49% damage to Undead. Finally there was the Decrep from the moron's Reaper's, whne it wasn't being overwritten by Life Tap. Used 1-point Berserk for PIs, which after BC was level 10, with 1 point Howl and maxed Shout as synergies, totalling 495% ED (making the multiplier above 17.49). All in all, things tended to die.

    I always wanted to play a DS Barb, because I love the no mana cost, and not having to charge it up or have it wear off like Frenzy. Damage output with the right gear (and companion) is still awesome (see above), and it's pretty easy to hit the 5.5 or even 5 frame (fastest) break points. Pretty much all my Barbs start off using DS, so I figured I had to have a go at continuing with the skill at least once.

    Playing with smilts was fun. He struggled early on to match my damage output, but he more than made up for it later on, especially against big beefy targets (still can't believe how quickly Smite can take down act bosses). In one sense, we're not a very good pairing, because we both have no sense of caution. Several deaths to both of us were entirely avoidable (especially one to me at level 9 in the Stony Field - how embarrassment!). But they did provide amusement to the one who didn't die. We also fell afoul of some seemingly bugged beetles in act 2 hell - melted both of us far quicker than any gloam pack I've ever encountered. On that same session, my moron became invisible to monsters, meaning I swore a lot, especially when trying to take down PI ghost packs. One very, very annoying bug.

    Most of my gear picked itself, with the only interesting choice being Seraph's Hymn instead of Highlord's Wrath, sinc e I didn't need the 20 IAS. One thing I should have done differently is get some mana leech in there somewhere. Double Swing costs 0 mana at level 9+, but War Cry doesn't, and mana burn monsters annoyed me greatly when I couldn't stun them. Pots are all fine and dandy, but leech simply works better. Backpack contained Gheed's, the two Barb skillers with high life I possess (Fanatic with 40 and Experts with 35), a bunch of Sharp GCs, a Sharp LC of Vita, some Shimmering SCs and some SCs with LRes and life.

    Moron was Might with Reaper's, Vamp, and upped Shaftstop.

    Skills were fairly straight forward:

    20 - Bash (damage synergy for Double Swing, never actually used, though I probably should have)
    1 - Double Swing (level 9 after gear, 10 after BC, extra points only add 5% AR per level)
    1 - Berserk (for the PIs)

    20 - Sword Mastery
    1 - Increased Speed
    1 - Iron Skin
    1 - Natural Resistance (I nearly always forget this skill when figuring out my resistance gear)

    20 - Shout (smilts was trying to boost his defense as high as possible, plus adds time to BO and BC, and damage to Berserk)
    20 - BO (one day I'm going to make a Barb with no BO for the heck fo it)
    1 - Battle Command
    1 - Battle Cry (was originally intending to pump this, before I realised I didn't need it, and War Cry was on the whole more useful)
    5 - War Cry (rest here for increased stun length)

    The buggy beetles were probably fire enchanted minions. Since beetles are lightning enchanted by default, the FE/LE bug is more common with them than other monster types. I've faced some that took 1k hp off my character every hit without might or amp or anything.

    caution certainly isnt our thing. Never the less we didnt die over much. Roethlisberger, was a lot of fun to run with.
