    Don't call in sick.

Ugh. Well, I got fired today. I got fired for calling in sick on thursday. And yes, I really was sick. That was the first day I have ever missed, and I only had one tardy...so I get fired for attendance issues.

    Stupid Kmart.

I would be surprised if you can't bring a case of wrongful termination against them. Everyone is allowed sick days and they cannot rightfully fire you for taking one to my knowledge. Someone with a background in law, back me up or knock me down here.

That doesn't sound right. It's Christmas season, you'd think they'd be desperate for staff.

When you sign most part time applications, you are signing something that says that they can let you go and you can quit for any reason. Obviously if they fire you because you are black, you may have a case, but otherwise, nah.

Sounds like bad luck to me. I'm sure they were under corporate orders to let people go to save $$$, and you happened to take a day off at exactly the right time for them.

Either that, or you were a sucky employee and you deserved it. :D

I know in Texas they don't have to have a reason to fire you, agreement or not.

Yes, Texas is an "at will" state, as are many others.

I'd imagine the OP was a holiday employee, hired, you know, to work through the Christmas rush. If you can't be counted on to be at work during the busiest shopping season of the year, they can't really be expected to keep you on.

    It is all Darwin's fault.

    No, it isn't.

Survival of the fittest have little to do with the average work-a-day job, and even IF Darwinian theory explained the loss of job, Darwin himself has no moral or legal culpability for the termination as he is causally and temporally disjoint from the event in question.

PS: Can I apply for Garbad's position in his absence?

IL is also an "at will" state. If you'd work harder you wouldn't have to worry about it.

LOL, the one time I got fired, they said it was for bad handwriting. I suspect that it had more to do with the headhunters large commission coming due if i stayed one more day...but they said it was bad handwriting! It was for the better, if they hadn't fired me i wouldn't have found the job I have now.

Yes it is. He is less fit, therefore he gets sick, therefore he gets fired. Healthier genes = not sick = not fired.

And biological evolution and economics are both strongly utilitarian. Survival of the fittest via reproduction for the first and via wealth for the second. Bad genes (gonna get eaten) or stupid (gonna be poor)? Too bad for you. Both are blissfully unaware of anything even remotely deontological.

    "But it's Christmas!"
"Thank you! Call accounting; stop his bonus."

Umm...fair enough, but how does this make it DARWIN'S fault?

Are we to hold him accountable for any unsavory instances of a scientific theory he developed?

The whole Darwinist interpretation of economics kind of falls down when you realise that wealth is usually passed down to children, and that regardless of ability someone born rich will almost certainly remain rich.
