    Dire Bats demonstration video

Yovargas wanted to see this newly available rune effect of Firebats, so I recorded a short video of it in action:

Note how the bats swerve left and right and doesn't follow a straight path, which makes precise aiming impossible. Their damage and range is amazing though.

    Good on you, Hardrock!

Yeah, the imprecise aiming is a thing - it means that it's not quite as good at killing things right in front of you as the unruned version, so it's not strictly better :p.

BUT, the range is really good - it's awesome for killing those Tomb Guardians who are normally shielded by skeletons so you can't snipe them with Poison Dart, and are usually too far away to hit with most of your skills.

I think it's best used as a fire and forget nuke in huge crowds. It's a waste of mana against smaller groups, kinda like Energy Twister for the Wizard. Both skills are ideally used in the same scenarios.

Firebats is one of the skills where I prefer to use the unruned version in the beta. Due to the low HP pools of enemies Grasp of the Dead is better suited for eliminating huge masses of them and it can be targeted as well.

It's huge burst damage may end up being useful in PvP as well eventually, at least at short ranges.

Seems kind of awkward to use that thing. Hungry Bats might be a more interesting rune.

It might look better once stuff doesn't die in half a hit.

    You're welcome.

It's not awkward at all, just imprecise. At least it's better than Chakram and Energy Twister, although that's not saying much. :)

Hungry Bats is a totally different thing. It's best when you have lots of enemies scattered all over your screen, while Dire Bats is better when your enemies are clumped together, preferably in a line formation.

I was thinking of using Dire Bats for nostalgic purposes. The high damage, the piercing, and the nearly straight path of the projectile are highly reminiscent of Bone Spear from Diablo 2. I had a Bone Necromancer in Diablo 2, and when I tried this skill I instantly recognized that I could now remake that type of character in Diablo 3.

    It's still a channeled skill.

It is one hit at a time. It is almost the same skill as Elemental Arrow for Demon Hunter, but it travels more slowly and does more damage.

    Re: Dire Bats demonstration video

The funny thing is, that it's still channeled, which is apparent from it's casting animation. Channeled skills in D3 can be put in two categories.

Skills belonging in the first are the only one I would truly call channeled. This includes Ray of Frost, Disintegrate, base Firebats. These skills deal damage in ticks 0.5 second apart and only while you're casting them. Increased APS doesn't decrease the time between ticks, instead it increases the displayed damage. Also, resource isn't necessarily spent in sync with damage ticks.

The second category encompasses skills like Dire Bats and Arcane Torrent. Their attack speed is affected by APS, they fire projectiles which will deal damage even if you stopped casting and resource is spent in sync with the appearance of these projectiles.

I wouldn't consider the second group of skills channeled, but the game and the devs do, so apparently a skill is considered a channeled one by them, if it has a continuous casting animation.

Due to various reasons I recorded two more videos of Dire Bats. I post them here, so they don't go to waste:

    Thanks again, HR. :)

The big bonus - asides from the big dmg - seems to be the huge range which is pretty darn great. I can definitely see the use for this but the regular flamethrower effect is just too cool to pass up. :)

Nice videos. They seem to travel much furthest than 40 yards.

Yeah, I just thought about that. Their range seems closer to 55-60 yards.

Dire bats is one of my least favorite skills in the game.

Up there with energy twister and ray of frost.

    Re: Dire Bats demonstration video

The best thing about Dire Bats I think is the size of the projectiles. If I'm not mistaken it can hit two lines of enemies in two straight lines. Where something like Poison Dart would only hit one. Still though, I feel like the unruned version is better early on, which may be why they give you a 220% damage spell at such an early level, because it's awkward to use.
