Dark D3 - the answer to the color color yapping

    http://darkd3.com/

I don't know how many people know about this one, and I certainly haven't found a thread here, so let's present Pyloneer's DarkD3 Pixel Shader mod. If you think the game is currently too colorful for your taste and you want to restore the dark, gritty atmospheric look of Diablo 1, now you can. It doesn't modify any game files, and it's just a shader filter, so you won't be at risk of getting banned from Bnet.

The above page has a D3 screenshot of New Tristram, and from the side you can pick which level of the filter you want to use, with live preview. Enabling the sharpness is highly recommended because it's a significant improvement. Once you make your selection from one of the 5 filter levels, then click the big green Download button. I actually downloaded all 5 so I can try them one at a time and see what gets my juices going.

To install it, you just unpack the files into the main D3 installation folder. To uninstall, just delete "d3d9.dll" and every file that contains "darkd3" in its filename, including the "darkD3_Shaders" folder (4 items in total). Don't forget to read the "readme" for troubleshooting and more info.
The effect is turned on automatically once you start the game. To toggle it on and off, just press the Pause/Break key on your keyboard. It's that simple! Even the uber-dimwits the game is designed for can get it working. No customization included, for all your noobish gaming needz.

And before you ask, yes it DOES work with the beta.......if you can ever manage to get past the login screen. A gazillion thanks to Pyloneer for the below video and for creating the filter. You won't have to cancel your preorder after all.

Seriously? It looks a lot better without the filter if you ask me.

I think it looks better with filter on, but I'm not going to use it, maybe Blizzard will ban me.

Maybe it's because I'm not yapping, but I'm not going to install a mod to a game that isn't even released yet...

I'd tell you what to cut off, but it ain't PG

    l2r, "works with the beta"

I believe the one shown in the vid is the highest level, it's too much for me too. I found that I'm quite happy with the medium effect. that's why the download site has the live preview, so you can pick what suits you most.

Re: Dark D3 - the answer to the color color yapping

people who complain about the color just want something to complain about

if we are gonna take all the color out of the game lets go ahead and add this to the lore

Diablo: Now has the power to drain all colors from the world

Re: Dark D3 - the answer to the color color yapping

These things are pretty useless imo because they mute all the colors that don't need to be muted as well...like the health and resource orbs, spells, fires etc...the end results is not an improvement. They are not an answer to anything

Let me rephrase "to a game that isn't even released yet" then to "to a beta that is finished in a few days".

On a side note, I'm not entirely sure I like your tone.

Re: Dark D3 - the answer to the color color yapping

The filters are safe to use and were not created by Pyloneer. It's just a...think of it like a driver plugin.

I've tried a few variants of it and I have to say that I won't be using them for D3. The sharpness is horrible and wrecks the UI. I liked it at first but the novelty wore off very quickly.

This is what I love about people who are really into hating the way D3 currently looks. They like to make out fans of the game's visuals to be the ones who are more immature, yet they're the ones who say stuff like this.

Re: Dark D3 - the answer to the color color yapping

    all of this.

Not to mention this is the 3,291st thread regarding the color and not your first time advertising this in the forums, sometimes unprovoked and interrupting others conversations in other forums.

Am I probably just bitter because I dont like the color whiners because I have read too many threads on them? Possibly, but still QQ. play or dont.

Re: Dark D3 - the answer to the color color yapping

    Looks terrible, needs work.

Sharpening also increases lightness of some pixels, I've noticed, which when the field is darkened by the filter increases the lightness range in places where it shouldn't (mainly the UI), drawing unwanted focus. Makes the whole effect ugly and distracting. Whoever built this thing needs to read a few texts on color and vision science.

The sharpening is also creating artifacts at the edges of the UI, and on UI text.

Nice web design though, so whoever built that has that going for them, unless they farmed it out. Then they have nothing.

To address the D3 art criticisms you'd have to redesign every art asset, model, texture, and redo the lighting engine.

Re: Dark D3 - the answer to the color color yapping

People have different preferences, that's all. Nothing wrong with it, nor is it surprising. Only oddity is that people seem to think that their aesthetic preferences are somehow objectively correct.

Play a game that has mods, like Skyrim or DA:O for instance, and you'll immediately see a host of graphics mods spring up with a wide range of different effects. In the case of Skyrim, this happened within days -- well before the official modding tools were released. Different people pick different mods, and some play unmodded, and everybody gets what they want, and everybody's happy. This is why I don't understand why any PC game developer goes out of their way to make their game unmoddable :/

I wouldn't use a mod like this... personally, I actually LIKE some bright, sunny environments in my games regardless of theme (it's why I could never finish Fallout 3 for instance... just too brown and unrelentingly grim ><). Sure you need to mix that up with some dark, gloomy areas, but those areas come out all the darker if there's some contrast in the world. But I have no problem with people who do use it.

Re: Dark D3 - the answer to the color color yapping

i can understand someone saying they think the game could look better but to complain that its not dark enough and then say it should be more like d2 is confusing to me. d3 is darker than d2 sooooooooooooooooooo......

Re: Dark D3 - the answer to the color color yapping

True, Apocalypse... I agree with that too. And then the people who think D3 is less bloody and gory than D2... have they even LOOKED at the game? :/ You can argue about whether more blood and gore is desirable or not, but it really is objectively false that D3 is less gory than D2 or D1.

Well I'm actually happy that someone spent the time to come out with something like this.

Perhaps now, those who complain about the colors can now stop complaining?
