Is it worth sticking with the WD specific options, or should I just go for the best spec's regardless of weapon type? Does anyone have any guidance as to what to look for?

Currently I have a socketed ceremonial blade doing 44.7 base damage. I am level 27 (or 28), and not really sure what I should be using.. :scratchchin:

At your level, just go for the best specs. Whatever unique WD bonuses (increased mana, mana regen, etc) you get from your Ceremonial Knife at so low a level will be too insignificant to be worth passing up superior damage/intelligence that another weapon might give you.

Heck, even at higher levels, Ceremonial Knives aren't that great :p. Their base damage doesn't seem to go as high as some other one-handers, and affixes like increased mana regen don't seem to compensate for reduced damage unless you have a very specialised build that requires some very specific affixes, but that would require you to look at the rest of your armour pieces as well.

The best weapons for witch doctors when it comes to wanting to use a off hand are going to be the daggers. They naturally have the highest attack speed and can have properties that can make it go all the way up to 1.86. I'm also talking in the perspective of an Attack Speed Witch doctor using splinters and or firebombs as main source of attack.

If you haven't already tried it, find some cheap atk speed rings, atk speed dagger, and a cheap atk speed glove and bracer. Put on splinters and unbreakable grasp. And your damage wether or not you use firebombs or darts, will be GINORMOUS and you'll clear EVERYTHING!@#$%. All the way up until Hell that is.

Agree with Carnage, fast=good when you do a splinter build.
Imo the ceremonial blades is just useful when you do a mana intensive build (bears) due to mana regen *4 from vision quest

Ahh, but you guys are all forgetting STYLE

I use Mojo, voodoo mask, and ceremonial knife because I'm a WITCH DOCTOR DAMN IT!

I don't care if something else is technically better, I play for fun, not to min/max stats.
And NO, I don't intend to play Inferno mode, so there

It really depends ceremonial knifes are actually a budget variant for a fast-ish weapon. Since daggers asked for by many other players not just witch doctors you more frequently find one for cheap at the auction house. On the other hand if you are looking for a high end weapon it is often more expensive, but stil might be worth it if you have a decent boni on it.

I tried dropping the shield for a mojo again today and just died too easily :(

I still have my ceremonial blade (44.7dps on the weapon), but hope I can get something a little better at some point.

There is no reason you would start dying just because of that change, unless your change was not well thought out.
    What level are you?
What gear did you drop for the Mojo?
What stats did the mojo have?
What stats changed as a result of the change. (and not just the 3 it shows you, but resistance, defence etc etc)
I picked up an axe that added several hundred to my damage, so what did I do?
I took that axe to the AH, and found a better ceremonial knife!
In fact, I got a 10,000 gp bargain that not only vastly bettered my old knife, but also eclipsed the axe.
Honestly, my WD looked silly holding an axe!
you WILL find a mojo that improves the stats of your current off-hand, if you know how to look properly.

Ha ha. Yes without doubt. The mojo has a boost to intelligence, but not a huge amount else (mana regen I think was one of the other ones). It just seems like I don't have anything better than my shield at the moment.

I think that it really depends on your style of play. And your equipment. What is your Int? My WD is level 27 and I'm using a 40dps ceremonial blade (socketed with a perfect ruby) so it does about 56dps. I have a mojo in the off-hand and about 700 Int.

My setup is like this: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/witch-doctor#acYTUR!bX!aaZaaa
I stand back and fire a couple of dire bats and then clean up anyone who escaped it with splinters. Monsters almost never get up on me 'cause I kill them too fast. Increased attack speed and Int make a really big difference in your damage.

How are you getting killed? I'm guessing that you need to find some +Int equipment and get your damage up so you can kill them before they get on top of you.
