    Best Estimation of Screen Length

I would like to gauge the length of some skills not yet seen, specifically Dire Bats.

The description reads that it can hit enemies up to 40 yards away.

Isn't the visible area of the screen only about 45 or 50 yards?

Depends on the resolution of the screen. But this is something I'd like to find out.

Height is resolution-independent. Only the width changes based on resolution (4:3, 16:10 or 16:9, with 16:9 having the largest view). This is the same as in SC2, and someone already posted a screenshot somewhere that demonstrates the differences.

So in any case, if you measure the height in yards, you got yourself the length as well, regardless of resolution (just multiply by 4/3, 16/10 or 16/9, accordingly).

I used the Demon Hunter's Vault to measure the area that you can see on your screen. Here's the screenshot I used as a reference: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20530300/d3/35 yards.png

Every red dot is 35 yards away from your character, which means that to the sides you can see about 65 yards away, upwards about 70 yards away and finally downwards about 35 yards away. Of course these are estimates, but should be close enough to the actual values.

Wow, if that's 35 yards, the character is really tall! :)

Yeah 35 yards looks to be at most 5 character lengths. That makes the character 7 yards tall, or 6.4 meters tall, or 20' 11" tall! Even granting that the Diablo characters are exceptionally tall, the distances are about 3 times what they should be. So, if "game yards" were changed to "game feet" it would almost be realistic!

Yup... the real answer here is that "yards" are not yards but something more like feet :p

HardRock, is that 16:9 or 16:10? Yes I guess I could measure it ;)

    I play in 1920x1080, so 16:9.

I think the real reason Blizzard skewed the numbers is because they don't want to display decimals. Otherwise they could easily just divide all the "X" yards numbers by 3 and there would be no problem, given a little bit of imagination.

Re: Best Estimation of Screen Length

I'll repeat what I said on main page comments, that "yards" is mostly flawed since it's got a real world equivalent, and the length in game is clearly very different. They might have been better with "feet" as that's closer to the distance (a third of a yard), or just invented a term like Span or Length or Stride, that doesn't have any real world analogy.

I wouldn't want "meter" since it sounds too modern, as a term specifically created, along with the rest of the metric system, in the late 1700s in France. Besides, Blizzard's explanation that yards are fine since they're basically the same as meters is half-assed, for reasons expressed in this thread. The in-game length is way shorter than a yard or a meter.

Another useful eye comparison is Fan of Knives, which has a nice tight circumference and extends10 yards, according to the skill description. And it's only just longer than a melee attack with something like a polearm.

I took your base image HardRock and did a quick and dirty second pass on it for my own purposes, posting here with respect to your initial effort. Thanks.

Oh, that's a handy picture. Unfortunately, my photo editing skills are really limited to say the least, so even something like that was out of the question for me. :)

Odd that you can see 15 more yards north than you can south.

That would be perspective in play, I believe.

Since the view isn't actually top-down 100%, it makes sense like that. If they wanted the north and south view to be even yard-wise, they wouldn't be able to place your character in the center of the screen. Not sure which would have actually been better, though.

Re: Best Estimation of Screen Length

    Here you go, guys.
This is an album I made to show the measurements of Witch Doctor skills: http://imgur.com/a/jJdOs

I used Soul Harvest as my main unit of measurement.

All spells were cast in the center of the town, on top of the warp point.

I've found that if playing on 16:9 1920x1080 resolution, the length of the screen is approximately 96 yards.

The space from the center of the screen to the edge of the screen is approximately 48 yards.

I didn't include it, but plain, unruned firebats extends approximately 24 yards.

It's difficult to measure vertical distances because of the camera. Since the camera is isometric and not top-down, the horizontal measurements are all skewed. So, I tried to aim my spells only to the left and right.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
