    Auto-Pickup Items

Bashiok wrote that they do not want auto-pickup for items to avoid automization.

Now I know you guys hate World of Warcraft, but there I always pickup everything (used to be the shift button, now you can set it on by default).

And I'm perfectly happy with that! Of course I need to vendor trash items every now and then, but it would take me about the same amount of time to contemplate over each piece of loot I pick up.

Bashiok praises the decisions you have to make - shall I keep this item or not? That's a very important part of the game. He however does that in the dungeon, and has to make a pause after every mob group. I do that in town, while having a nice cup of tea with the merchant.

    Autopickup items ftw

i say its a bad idea... once you learn the game, you will want to pick/choose what to grab... if its ANYTHING like diablo 2, then you'll reach a point when 98% of the drops you dont want to pick up, not even to sell.

    Re: Auto-Pickup Items

I have to agree with kid and viking, so much of what drops in Diablo games is not worth picking up. It will be even more so in D3 with no TP. Another thing is, In WoW the loot is on the corps not like in the Diablo games where its on the ground where you can mouse over it and see if its worth picking up.

One thing they said they will have autopickup for is gold, all you have to do is walk over the gold and it will pick it up.

Would I be correct in assuming that it will be like D2 in the sense that it is He-Who-Clicks-First-Wins? That is, that there isn't going to be some kind of loot-rolling system?

    Re: Auto-Pickup Items

different from both actually. all loot that drops will be yours to pick up, and the other players will see different drops. kinda like a round robin loot system... so there will no more clickfests trying to get items with the boss at 1% and no one is killing it.

    Re: Auto-Pickup Items

WoW and D3 are not comparable in that respect.

WoW has completely different item system and the auto-pick up feature there is useful because it doesn't fully automate the loot process, it just reduces the amount of player input needed. Unlike D3, players in WoW can hold far more items and these items are never dropped on the ground, so in order to loot an enemy the player has to click its corpse to bring up the list of the item it carries and then click the items they wish to loot. At the very least two clicks. With the auto-pick up feature, the player has to click the corpse just once in order to loot it.

As you can see, even with the auto-pick up feature in WoW, the level of player input required to loot an item is still the same in both games - you click once and the item ends up in your inventory. Without auto-loot, WoW requires more input, which is why that feature is useful there.

Due to their smaller inventory, D3 players need to be much more selective about which items they pick up anyway, so for this reason alone auto-pick up wouldn't work because the players' inventory would quickly be filled with useless stuff. It would also remove the amount of player input needed to pick up items, which is of no use because it's already so low that reducing it further would practically result in automation.

In short, auto-pick up works well in WoW but wouldn't work well in D3.

    Re: Auto-Pickup Items

I would like the game to pick up gold for me. I'd like the game to automatically fill my belt with potions, if that mechanic remains similar in D3 (and along those lines, I'd like to be able to tell the game what quality of potions I'd like to pick up). Beyond that... I'm fine with selecting the stuff I want.

Essentially, if there's anything that's going to force me to spend an inordinate amount of time clicking on the ground for items, then I'd prefer it if they tried to make that more automatic. Gold and potion pickup would make Diablo 2 a much better experience, but I can only speculate about Diablo 3.

Ok. So it seems a little like Guild Wars. I seem to recall in that one that you did see other's drops, but they were reserved.

    Re: Auto-Pickup Items

    Hi!

WoW auto pickup isin't auto pickup really. You still have to press the corpse. When you have a button that picks up every loot from certain radius or when the game does it automatically you have auto pickup.

Also having the loot in the corpses would be quite sad. Seeing some cool items fly around when the monsters die is one of the best things in D2! :) Also you would have to check every corpse for loot wich is not a good idea.

WoW-like idea where you have to check every corpse is a really bad idea. It consumes time alot. Having button that picks up everything on certain radius COULD work if you can set a list what to pick up and what not, but this would be so easy to abuse whit botting that i don't think it should/will be implemented.

    Re: Auto-Pickup Items

Thats exactly why I want auto pickup for items. TIME!! Diablo 2 dropped millions of junk items, and you had to review each and every freaking one of them.

    1. Auto Pickup for Items (as in, every Item within 3 meters of your char automatically gets vacuum-cleaned into your backpack)
    2. Less Junk Items (thousands instead of millions)
    3. enough bag space

= more action, more roleplaying, and less inventory management

    Re: Auto-Pickup Items

Reviewing items in D2 takes like 2 seconds. And the two seconds I gain from just vacuuming it all up automatically will be lost getting rid of the heavy gloves and exploding potions I didn't want. Unless they have a component system like Hellgate had where you broke down items for parts. Then I could see maybe justifying it since you could hold down a button and just click everything down into parts real quick.

    Re: Auto-Pickup Items

What is the point of even having items drop if you use auto-pickup? If you aren't required to click on them or even look at them on the ground, you might as well just have a little indicator float up over every killed monster showing what it dropped and have it just appear in your inventory.

Personally I like having the ability to scan through the drops and only pick up what suits my needs at the time. I would not like having stuff filling up my inventory without knowing what's going in there. I'm constantly scanning stuff on the ground and do it almost instinctively now so it's not really a burden for me, but it might be for some folks I suppose.

I do like the idea of personalized drops, as that would eliminate the angst we all feel seeing a brown ring drop from baal and clicking frantically knowing that your chances of getting it almost nil.

    Re: Auto-Pickup Items

As others have pointed out, WoW item drops are much fewer in quantity and worth more to the player per drop, since you can sell many greens or disenchant things and put on the auction house. Diablo is about filling the screen up with drops, so autopickup simply doesn't make sense.

    Great Idea!
Would be a good thing for my wizards back pain too - no more bending over 1000 times an hour.

Yeah but whats the point of dropping billions of gray items? Atmosphere? If thats the only reason grays could just as well drop as non-pickupable-items. That would even free up some of your computers resources for more important stuff.

    Re: Auto-Pickup Items

For me atmosphere is one of the most important aspects of Diablo: sure, that particular weapon is useless, but you can still wield it, if you want. Like bigmacc I'd like to know what goes in my inventory and I'd like to decide myself. And I agree with craezyjim, items dropping and you picking them up belongs to Diablo just as much as Deckard Cain. I love hacking down a mob of monsters and then checking with Alt what has dropped and what is worth picking up. In some weird way, wading through tons of useless crap is actually part of the fun.

For me Diablo is Fun because of the monster hacking, atmosphere, rpg-elements etc., not because of the "wading through tons of useless crap". That I find tedious and time-consuming.

    Re: Auto-Pickup Items

That's it in a nutshell for me; it gives me a sense of satisfaction to kill a horde of monsters and then bask in the huge piles of loot that litter the battlefield. Yes most of it is crap, but sorting through it and finding that valuable item or rune hidden between the cracked sash and stamina potion is what keeps me coming back for more.

Would I like to see maybe a few less junk items drop, especially on hell diff? Yes, but I agree that tons and tons of loot is what makes D2 what it is.

    Re: Auto-Pickup Items

I like this idea, if you could tell the game you only wanted to pick up blues or better then I wouldn't mind so much if the game auto picked up items. Maybe they could have a little window open up in the lower right hand corner giving you the details of each item in a slideshow format.

If they didn't do it for every item I agree with Kromp that it would be nice for at least health pots to be automatically picked up

    Re: Auto-Pickup Items

Dropping them for atmosphere its nice, but why would anyone EVER pick up a gray item?

"Sorting through junk" is not a fun gameplay element. Why do people enjoy sorting through junk?

Is Blizzard gonna write that on the back of the game box, as a feature?

    - defeat evil monsters
    - cast magical spells
    - sort through thousands of junk items

    wtf?

If sorting through junk makes you horny feel free to clean up the mess in my room ;-)

    Tons of Loot - Yes!
    Tons of Junk - No!
    Autopickup - Yes!

    I imagine autopickup this way:
    + always-on vacuum-cleaner with a 4 meter radius
    + Quality-Threshhold-Setting: Do I want gray+, white+, blue+, rare+, green+ or only uniques? (thx Kromp)
+ whenever an Item gets picked up a good looking (icon, itemstats) floating indicator gets displayed for 10 seconds (thx bigmacc)
+ You can still manually pick up items below your threshhold by clicking on them (<- this feature though I'll probably never use)

    Save the poor mousebutton!
