Single player and Battle net

It's been maybe 5 years since I've played Diablo 2, so if this is an obvious question, that's the reason why. Is it going to be possible to use a single player character over battlenet? The reason I ask is because I really want to play alone the first time through, take my time, etc. just get a good feel. And I wouldn't want this character to be a waste, as it would be if I can't use it in multiplayer. I know you can play alone online, but I'd rather not be dependent on internet connections, possible delays and overseas servers, etc.

One more thing: is blizzard going to be able to wipe out hacking? I think they said they would, but does anyone think this is remotely plausible? I remember the hacking really spoiled battlenet in diablo 2 for me, and if it's going to be prevalent, I might just stick to single player.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Re: Single player and Battle net

This will not happen. The reason is pretty obvious: Cheating.

It is already hard enough to prevent cheating online (or botting). But local play (on local computer) is wide open the cheats and Blizzard cannot really have any control over it. People will just gear up their character (using external software to modify their savegame for instance) and then go on Battle.Net with those maxed-out characters... If few player does not care about the loot and being geared with cheats instead of actually farming the loot, other people do.

I don't really know what you mean about hacking? If you are talking about your account, well Blizz cannot really do anything about it. It is up to you to prevent other people to steal your account name/password. If you were talking about cheating. Blizzard will do its best to prevent it online (and that's why again, you cannot bring your local character online).

Now there are things people needs to put into perspective. Yes cheating will ALWAYS be possible. Some people will still find a way to cheat even if Blizzard is doing all they can to prevent it. But at the difference of Diablo 2 or 1, Blizzard's expertise in this domain is better and for instance I doubt there will be anyway to "duplicate items" (Blizzard's did a mistake in D2 for one patch and they fixed it, they know exactly how to prevent it now) or stuff like that. And if someone really finds a way, Blizzard will react quickly with all the new tools developped for that (which was not existing before for Diablo 1 and 2).

Botting is unfortunaly another topic...

Interesting that you ask those two questions together. Like the above poster said single player characters online guarantees cheating.

I'll check how bad the lag is first, and if it's still annoying playing with a 800ms ping then I'll stick to SP. At least until there's a *cough* local realm. Sucks being half a world away from the US, Europe, Asia and Australia

Close, but no. The southern tip of africa. Half a world away is a slight exaggeration, but that hardly matters if the only thing you can really play on servers outside africa is turn-based games.

When it comes cheating online, don't forget we will using Bnet 2.0 with D3. I for one am certain that means things like botting will be much less likely. Not going to say impossible, but I'm betting it will take the hackers a good while to figure something out and I'm hoping Blizz can keep a step or two ahead of them.

I dont see why you cant play solo over bnet instead unless its like D2 where there were definate advantages like /players 8 and the map not changing each time you make a game.

Re: Single player and Battle net

OK thanks for the answers people, it was a silly question, I'd forgotten the difference between open and closed bnet. But a new question: is there going to be open bnet for Diablo 3? And if there is, is it likely to be as full of cheaters as D2?
