I played D2 only for the PvP

Hey guys, brief intro here. Im a 21yr old guy who started my D2 addiction somewhere during 2001. I know I have zero post counts to boot, but rest assured Im not trolling. I consider myself quite a competitive gamer and I just wan u guys to see things from my point of view.

So heres a summary of my story:

1. Started off with singleplayer. Fun for afew weeks then it got repetitive eventually. Managed to get to act 2 nightmare with no outside help

2. Started Bnet a year later when I got my internet. The fun part of the game was trying to find better items. Heart never fail to skip a beat when a golden item drops.

3. Within 6 months of hardcore gaming, and help from my friends I became pretty rich(windforce, vamp gaze etc.). The fun of killing monsters with other players started to detoriate. By this point of time, my lvl80+ amazon can solo ANY monsters in hell(baal and frens, cow lvl etc.). I dont see the challenge in PvM anymore so I started to dwell into PvP.

4. I did reasonably well in PvP, able to beat 70% of the pub people but theres still better players out there. Continued to trade, MFing more so that I can get better gears so I that I can beat the other players. Rinse and repeat until a year later when my account got hacked(long story).

Conclusion: Its not much of a challenge to be able to clear the game PvM. But its an endless experimentation with builds, skill points, items , tactics to kill the very best PvPers.

Its a publicly known fact that most competent PvP builds will have little trouble clearing PvM. However, a regular PvM char will have a hard time going against a char built solely for dueling.

I figure that PvM will be more appealing to the casual player, but the competitive players will get bored of PvM eventually and want to pit against real life opponents instead of AIs.

Solution: If blizz really wanna make PvM more fun/challenging they need to make the minions stronger. Stronger to the point where u need the combined efforts of all the players in the game to beat the monsters.

Its not that fun when my D2 PvP chars at their peak(take for eg. barb with enigma, botd berserker, dual leech rings) can solo hell with 7 players in the game(the more players in the game, the tougher the minions).

But STILL, taking PvP away from D3 can only be a big turnoff for players who wans a competitive edge in their game. We didnt do MF 24/7 to find top end gears so that we can slay minions which can be beaten with mediocre gears.

Re: I played D2 only for the PvP

Long story short : played PvM , both cooperatively and soloed , eventually i tried to go for level 99 in season 3 us west , after reaching 99 for barb (1st on us west in season 3 = absolut_pudge ), the only thing that kept me in the game is builds for PVP , both those with/without level restrictions , with/no twink duels.
i still remember the barb duels being called king of kings etc.

i have to agree with thread starter (OP).

Taking away PvP might add to the theme of cooperative play , but it denies a population that flourished on the excitement and availability of agreed duels

Who said they will take away PvP? I think PvP will be even bigger in Diablo 3.

According to an interview by one of the blizz staff, D3 will be more focused on PvM than on PvP. I doubt they would take away PvP(dueling), but theres a chance they might take away PKing and be less focused on making PvP more balanced.

I just hope that one of the blizz staff will read this and be aware that there IS a large PvP community, and by taking the focus off PvP in D3 will result in the loss of interest for D3 for those in the community.

Granted dueling and PKing are 2 different things, I still hope that PKing will stay. It adds a 'human factor' into the game and an element of surprise imo.

On a side note, I hope they dont restrict the game to anything less than 8 players. Im sure there are people who'd agree with me.

I for one couldent care less for pvp in D3.
If i wanted to pvp i play a fps, rts or an mmo.

Diablo has always been about slashing monsters

I don't deny that Diablo has always been about slashing monsters, but you can only slash AI-controlled pixels for so long before it gets boring. And what better ways to pit your hard-earned items and carefully thought out char builds against other players? duel

While its true that Diablo is an action/rpg game and theres fps and rts for the competitive players. But there is this certain sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when you use your own custom built character to duel and win against other players. And that is something rts, fps or versus can never offer.

PKing was the worst thing in D2. Whats fun about ruin others gaming-exprerience? PvP is when 2 people duel each other and both players are okey with it. The other thing is called ganking.

And the only PvP D2 provided was a messed up way to duel each other, so i'll guess you'll be fine.

Re: I played D2 only for the PvP

I consider D2 a predominantly PvM game, i suppose D3 will be the same. That doesn't mean that they aren't going to include opportunities to duel though.

PvP in D2, despite many flaws, is quite amazing and there is some truth to the fact that it keeps the game alive. For some people it's an element of natural evolution, they PvM, gather gear and trade, and start to duel.

I could not agree more. I have pretty much followed the path the OP has taken himself till I stopped playing the game. I think it would be a big mistake to take out the PvP aspect of the game even if the main focus of the game should remain PvM. If you don't like PvP you're not forced to take that route but for many people this represents a challenge and of path they are willing to take and it adds a dimension to the game.

Re: I played D2 only for the PvP

You're in luck, Nikkisexx. The monsters in D3 are a lot tougher now, and the fights are longer and more involved. Obviously, Blizz is not going to get rid of PvP, although yes, the focus is on PvE. PK is gone forever, though. Blizzard is limiting party sizes so that everyone in the game is playing With you instead of just near you. Also, they've said that when they played with 8-man parties, it wasn't any fun because the screen was flooded with spell effects and you couldn't tell what was going on. Plus, like I said, the group wouldn't stay together.

I hypothesize that for Bnet, a person can make their game PvP enabled or PvP disabled. The ones marked for PvP will be meant for dueling, etc.

I don't care who you are, PKs are not fun. In games like WoW, PKs make the game feel like a living world. But in an instance based game like Diablo it's just someone coming in to ruin your fun.
