Have to say the best part is accessibility. That you actually canŽt just click a game and join sorts out a lot of the low-quality participants. Since ive only been doing this for a few days I have to say I already have some good experience. Most of my necro has been lvled from a1 norm to a2 nm in MP. As when I started to play him IŽd just open a game and post it.
One thing that makes a good group session is, cant remember what its called, but at start there is a list of items that gives points. everyone moves out to collect as many of the items as possible. Usually the list ranges from Bolt of arrows to uniques. After a set time limit the winner is chosen. can be done in lots of version. From new chars to godly chars roaming whichever act they choose.
Ironman, and different skill/item restriction starting new char tournaments.
I find it stunningly enjoyable when you set up a group to play together. If you choose characters which complement each other, its brilliant to see the teamwork-related ownage which comes from it. Hardcore is my preference, because there is no challenge if you've got nothing to lose.
I tend to run in pairs with any of a handful of mates. I find that using voice chat helps with the fun too. Makes it less mundane for certain.
I've set up a regular Tuesday night session of D2, with Skype voice chat. Our group plays HC untwinked. Currently we're in A3NM with a Summonmancer, BlizzBaller, 2H Fan Pally, and I think another Pally is joining us. I've had some problems with my PC the last couple of weeks so we've had to postpone, but when it gets going it's fantastic, an amazing feeling.
IMO, questing is the place to have a laugh, and talk rubbish. Baal runs are usually too quick for banter, maybe one or two questions, at most. As LHTB said, my favourite MP sessions are those where everyone has fun doing it, and in my experience it makes Normal A1-2 much less of a chore.
Hope that helps.

I agree, questing can net some damn funny convos sometimes. Especially in NM because no one has to pay attention
