Will D3 run better on Ati or NV cards?

Came across this article that might shed some light on which gfx card manufacturer might run better with D3.

Quote:
THE MAKER OF WORLD-CONQUERING MMORPG World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment, has finally announced the long-awaited third installment of the Diablo games series - currently named Diablo 3, with stunning originality.

Unlike WoW, Diablo will be a much more straight offline experience, but with the multiplayer dungeon quest elements that made Diablo 2 one of the stalwarts of the LAN gaming scene.

More interesting, however, is the development platform Blizzard is going for. Within the official FAQ, there are a few interesting nuggets that will make Nvidia sit up and take note.

First off: the game will run on XP as well as Vista, with DirectX 10 being recommended but not required. As if that wasn't bad enough for the green team, which is working hard to shift new DX10 cards, the Direct X 10 included will be of the 10.1 variety - supported by DAAMIT but not the boys in green. This means that the best graphical experience might just be on ATI hardware.

And as a real kicker, Blizzard has opted for Havok physics - acceleratable on both Nvidia and ATI graphics cards, but now owned by Intel - over Physx, the physics platform from Nvidia.

To add salt to the wound, Blizzard will be keeping up with its tradition of releasing games simultaneously on Mac OSX as well as PC - meaning not only do you not need Vista to play, you don't even need a PC.

Diablo 3 is being marketed by Blizzard as "the definitive action role-playing game", and with the firm's recent track record, we wouldn't bet against them.

What is won't be, it seems, is a guaranteed graphics card seller, unlike many of the other triple-A titles released recently.

Worry about things like that when they've at least announced a date.

"with DirectX 10 being recommended"

i seem to recall that Blizzard has said, many times, that they will not use DX10 in D3 or any time in the near future. am i wrong?

No, you're correct. Like 99.9% of the rest of the industry, they don't want to gimp their audience by adding in DX10, or making cheesy effects simply for the reason that they're DX10.

Edit: err, as to the original question, I hardly think it matters with a game like Diablo 3. You'll find out more about that stuff closer to release.

I've always found ATI to have the smoothest graphics. Nvidia was good until after Geforce 4. D3= ATI will work best in my opinion

Aside from the fact that Nvidia have the best hardware atm...

For a start, that article seems to written by a douche-bag, DX10 isn't the staple build but could be implemented, the game is being built using Nvidia cards atm, and Blizzard have always started releasing games for Mac and PC to broaden their consumer base. Havok physics was utilized so that both ATI consumers and Nvidia would get the best, hence more profit...
Does this guy have any idea what he is talking about?

Nvidia performs better on DX10 games atm, but that is because games such as Crysis were optimized for Nvidia hardware.

It will run equal on both cards, their will be no advantage except that based of hardware. The firmware and shader models utilized by Nvidia and ATI and their extensive programming are very close, and a game such as D3 isn't graphically intensive.

Hot topic, and as a hardware junkie on i find myself wading in on very often.
All biases aside though, Nvidia are going to crush ATI when gtx 300 series comes out. Sure ATI will have their Hollywood DX11 cards out first and the 5870x2 will take the performance crown temporarily, the GTX 300 cards are going to be very very special. But they will be more expensive that ATI so i might find myself buying ATI for a general rig and GTX300 for my super rig.

Re: Will D3 run better on Ati or NV cards?

the whole ati vs nvidia is mind numbingly boring. its been going on for years. regardless of who makes the better card they both continually sell shed loads and they'll both have a range of affordable and geeky overpriced overpowered cards to support d3.

all i care is that my 8800gt, intel core2 duo e6750 2.66ghz system can run the game smooth as a babies bottom. i am doubting that will be the case and envisage having to muck about making a new computer or upgrading the one i have and having to format my pc to make it work.
