Still awesome after all these years

I'm really surprised at how much fun this game still is after, what, 15 years (damn I'm getting old )? I reinstalled this and Hellfire last night after I got home from work, made a new SP Warrior, and he's already up to clvl 22. Haven't died (yet), although have had a handful of NDEs. One was when I first entered the Caves and I insta-aggroed a bunch of monsters around the starting zone, and a couple of others where I mis-clicked and backed myself into a corner. I was also lucky to get spitting dog bosses on both level 7 AND 8.

While this game does have its drawbacks, such as having to chase stuff halfway across the map to score a kill due to the lack of a sprint key (despite which I still find myself holding down Ctrl when escaping enemies, which for some reason prevents my potion belt from working...also the cause of a few of my NDEs ), the 8-direction movement, no Alt-key to highlight drops, annoying hotkey placement, gold taking up inventory space, etc., it's still amazing how time flies when I play it. I've always been a big fan of Warriors and I'm playing this one a little bit differently than I've ever played one. Since I mostly played this game offline, I never knew about telekilling, I always used to think +stats gear wasn't all it was cracked up to be, etc., so now that I'm playing it with more experience under my belt from having played D2 (a LOT ) it's almost like playing a new game again.

I've also gotten used to the autosave feature of D2, which I recall when I first played it I thought it was stupid compared to the save-anywhere ability of D1 SP, so I've limited myself to only being able to save in town, and once at the start of each new floor. That way I have to think about my decisions instead of just rushing in and loading if it didn't work out the way I wanted. Not really a challenging way to play or anything, but it adds another level of newness to it.

Guess this can be my time-eater until D3 arrives. D1 FTW!

Heh, yeah, with my (bad) luck I simply avoid those altogether.

Re: Still awesome after all these years

Yeah b/c of this thread, I dug up my D1 CD and have been playing HellFire to about lvl4... I thought I was going to give up since the MOVEMENT IS SO SLOOOOW, but I think the addiction has set in and I'm fiending to play as I type!

Does anyone have any links to character guides? I cannot find anything for the life of me?

Re: Still awesome after all these years

I think one of the cool things about D1 was the music. Anyone besides me trip out the first time you hit Tristam in D2LoD?! Or depressed when you saw what happened to Griswold. He was my favourite.

Another thing was that the way it was designed. There was some seriously cool Strategy cheats you could use in the game. Like making a Mage-warrior or a Mage-rogue.

Since mana requirements went down for allmost all spells as they got higher. I learned to pile all Plus magic gear next to the witches hut. You just needed the Magic skill to open the books. Concentrate on getting at least level 1 for each spell. Then whenever you found that one shrine that took 1 point from one spell. But plus 1 to all others. It was a mega payoff. And, of course reloading the game after working your way to level 6 to go after another level for the Hydra spell.

I think that what hurt the game the most was the shrines that permenantly ruin your Mana level if you don't use save game like I allways do. And, the Black Death zombies who will permenantly ruin your HP!! Keep a bow or Holy Bolt hand for range attacks when they show up.

Re: Still awesome after all these years

Yeah so I've made it all the way up to lvl 25 now with this Bow-Rogue: It's been fun, but also very frustrating! The game is so biased towards pure melle it is sicking! Finding a great bow has been uber frustrating! I've got a Cobalt +14 all 40% Lightening resist. 3-6. Great bow, but it's not going to carry any weight in nightmare. That and I cannot remember how I'm going to be finding all these items in single player, since unlike MP, I cannot re-run quests :-(
