Function and purpose of a soul in the Diablo Universe...

This is such a speculative thread!

What happens to a beings soul after its “mortal” form dies and what can that soul do?

Diablo always seems to get killed; his soul goes into a stone or somewhere random, just to return, as to ensure that we have a Big Red to fight in another instalment of the demons’ namesake game.

But that is not entirely the point of the question. Izual had fallen and it is stated that your quest is to kill the demon in whose body his soul presides. When you finally kill him, out pops an ethereal form (aka soul) of an angel with an attitude. Acting all tough and making serious threats for someone who was just defeated and finds himself in a form that is nothing more than luminescent mist.

The real question now is, is he a demon? His body was in demon form but his soul it still angelic. Be is corrupted and all that.

Also, obviously demons can possess creatures (Angels also, if you assume that Izual possessed the demon body.) What possibilities does this create in future story line and or plot?

Then the last thing is that we know that humans and Nephalem (I consider them different races) souls go somewhere that is neither heaven nor hell. Where exactly that is we do not know, but when you meet up with Rathma for drinks sometime, please as him, since he is sure to know...

Re: Function and purpose of a soul in the Diablo Universe...

im guessing it all has something to do with the "afterdeath" that Rathma and Trag go on about in the books, i don't think were told alot about it tho.demons always seem to go to this "black abyss" or "void" in lilith's case. As per usual its a subject we don't know enough about.

As for Izzy, is he realy possesed? i assume possesion to mean someones body (or soul?) being taken over by a demonic force. Izzy knew what he was doing all along he was more corrupted, ie changed, into his fallen state than possesed. thats the way i view it. Is Izzy a demon, don't have a clue. somewhere inbetween meby...nephalem? lol

so many questions to ask! Us lore fans should put some foreward next time blizzard are accepting questions.

It makes me happy when people refer to themselves as lore fans, because that is where the "soul" of a game lies...

Izual isn't possesed, he is the possesor In my original post I said his angelic form is possesing the demon body...

What sucks for us lore fans is that there is no hard and fast basis from where to discuss lore, there are only tidbits we acquire in between Mephisto runs,so to speak, and the sin war books generate more questions than answers. Great marketing technique because all of us are expecting big things from Diablo III...
