I can't make Lanthanides method work,But I found a different way. Select multiplayer the 1) select direct cable conn. 2 create hero 3 create game 4 now select difficulty lvl.Use normal.
So what happend was that I am the only player in a multiplayer game.Since the hero has just been created, one starts at lvl 1 normal. If you die,all your equipped stuff falls to the ground where you died.Really nasty! Also normal is more difficult with stronger monsters. But leveling up also happens much faster. This is not exactly what I wanted, but hell, it's better than nothing!
I still would like a fix that doesn't involve any MP stuff.
All you're doing is playing a multiplayer game by yourself.
There are some significant differences between MP and SP:
- Monsters have 2x hitpoints
- No ability to save
- Only Butcher, Leoric, Lazarus and Diablo quests available, and Leoric and Lazarus are much simplified compared to SP and the Butcher and Leoric do not drop their special quest items.
- Cannot buy elixirs until you are clvl 26, and cannot buy vit elixirs
- Exp is capped to I believe a maximum of 10,000 per monster.
To get 'my method' to work, you're doing almost everything that you need to be doing. You just need to get your character up to clvl 20 so you can create Nightmare games, or clvl 30 so you can create Hell games. Once you've done that, create the direct connection game as you've been doing, except as NM or Hell difficulty, then quit the game immediately and start a new SP game with your SP character.
Ok, great! So I must first get my present MP hero to clvl 20/30 ? My 3 SP heroes are all above 20. So when Save a game in NM SP ,Will my hero still be in NM when I load the game again? Or do I have to repeat the procedure?
Thanx.
you can play single player game until u beat diablo. than, you use that single player character and start an mp game with it. choose nm (nm=nightmare or hell. for hell have to beat nm diablo obviously) for the difficulty. now, quit the mp game and choose single player game with that same character. you should now be playing on nm difficulty if this (lanthanide's) method works. you do NOT have to play an MP game from clvl 1 through beating norm diablo. you jsut use mp to create a nm (or hell) game, than you can quit and go back to single player game.

lanthanide,
is there anyway to confirm that you are on-in nm or hell difficulty besides like just observing monster power or their resistances-immunities stats?
is this really nm or hell difficulty or is it still norm difficulty but the monsters are tougher and give more exp only?
i'm just a bit skeptical if i don't see something more "concrete".
does it say on the screen the difficulty (below the game name and stuff on the upper right of screen in-game) ?
i don't think i have yet done nm yet. i been on hiatus from d1....i went back to d2...it's hard to stay commited since it's a bit slower pace. but i think i got 1 character who beat norm, but i've been staying in norm difficulty trying to get more spell books and gold for more elixers (i know nm gives more gold and stuff but i wanna be stronger before i start nm. need better gear, more stat points=elixers, spells-books, etc..).
You can't use your Single Player characters as Multiplayer (ie, battle.net) characters, they are completely separate. You need to create MP characters and get them up to clvl 20 or clvl 30 in order to start NM and Hell games.
As for confirmation, there is nothing in the game that says you are in NM or Hell whatsoever, but there are 3 obvious indicators:
- Gold dropped by monsters is much higher (piles of 100-200 gold in church)
- Monsters are much harder to kill and do more damage
- Monsters give much more experience
The monster mlvls are much higher also, so you'll see much higher base items dropping in the game, like helms and mail armor in the first few levels of the church.
As for playing in norm to get more money before you go to NM, just play NM instead and stick to dlvl 1-4. Dlvl 1-3 are especially easy and you'll rack up far more gold playing that than you will Normal/Hell because your killing speed will be much faster. You'll also run into more shrines and get lots of low level books, which could be useful.
When I played Diablo, I would instantly start playing NM games as soon as I hit clvl 20, often up until I hit 24 or 25, before going playing to playing normal/hell games. Often I would do this before I even killed Diablo on normal.
can u create characters on sp game and beat norm diablo, then use them in an MP (non-bnet, open-ip MP) game to create the nm/hell game than quit and play sp again with it being nm/hell ?
or
must u create open-ip mp characters than u can go play nm/hell on sp games?
All multiplayer characters of all forms are completely separate from Single Player characters. Ie, if you select 'Multiplayer' from the main menu, it is completely separate to if you chose 'Single Player' from the main menu.
The bug is that if you create a local Multiplayer game, using a Multiplayer character, then quit that game and start a new game using a Single Player character, the difficulty will carry over to the new Single Player game. You must use 2 separate characters to do this, it is not possible to do it using only one character.
Also just for the record, you can do this with a Single Player character at any clvl that you want, because it is abusing a bug, rather than a proper feature. While MP characters must be clvl 20 or clvl 30 to create NM and Hell games, Single Player characters can be any clvl at all, at any stage in the game. You could get up to clvl 15 in the caves and then start a Nightmare game and play through the church in nightmare, for example. You can even create NM and Hell difficulty games with clvl 1 single player characters. This only really works for the Sorc, because the Warrior and Rogue have atrocious to-hit against the NM and Hell-level monsters, whereas the Sorc's ability to hit enemies depends soley on his Magic attribute. Also the monsters do lots of damage and have very high to-hit scores, so it's pretty much impossible for a Warrior to play this way (I think I managed to get to clvl 4 before I completely ran out of gold to buy health potions, and therefore couldn't go any further). A Rogue will fair better due to her bow, but again her useless to-hit will make it pretty impossible to kill much. The Sorc however can get pretty far. IIRC you end up about clvl 8 or 9 after doing a full clear down to dlvl 2. Once you get to dlvl 3 it starts to get a bit difficult, and if you get a level with archers you should just give up because they'll make mincemeat out of you in short order.
any chance if i can make a mp character and play an mp game, beat norm/nm diablo or jsut get to the said clvls, then re-start an mp game at the wanted difficulty and quit. than would i possibly be able to use *my already made single player character* and play a single player game in nm/hell dificulties ?
and the mp character can be played on any type of mp game right ? or must it be bnet ?
also, i think it does let me use my single player character on an open or ip (non-bnet) mp game. does this mean anything or no, in relation to how the nm/hell bug works for single player games ?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
i'm still playing d2, but should i ever start doing d1 some more, i'll at least now i'll know how to correctly do harder difficulties on a sp game.
Yes, you can create brand new single player games using your existing single player character. When you start the new game, you'll be the same clvl and have the same items/spells as when you quit the last game, but none of the dungeons or quests will be cleared. This means you have to start all the way back in the church levels, which can be a bit of a drag if you're clvl10+. However, if the new game you have just started is on NM or Hell difficulty, it's actually beneficial to start off at the church levels and work your way up.
The MP character can create any kind of MP game, although I don't know if battle.net games actually work. Direct connection or local IPX work fine though, and you don't have to stuff around with b.net servers.
You most definitely cannot use your single player character in an ipx/direct connection/whatever game. They are *completely* separate.
