Environments and mood

Let's discuss what environments you would like to appear in Diablo III. From themes to specific areas you'd like to see.

I'd like to see something truly epic in D3. Due to the limitations in D2 you couldn't really feel this. For example the Worldstone keep could've been so much more; something remeniscant of the mines of Moria, just more surreal and grand. I'd imagine vast passageways and bridges, and huge monolithic structures that couldn't have been constructed by mortal hands. Seeing glimpses of other parts of the keep when traversing an impossibly deep chasm, for example, would've really given a sense of epic scale. In Diablo 3 I hope Blizzard does something like this; giving you the feeling of travelling deep into the earth's core.

Same thing goes for act2; imagine gigantic tomb entrances that have withstood the test of time over thousands of years (LotR films again - remember the Argonath scene?), looming over your character as you leave the sun scorched valley of the kings into the deep dark of Tal Rasha's tomb, which would also be comparatively huge and epic, containing vast atriums and chambers, huge monuments of human achievement built to glorify the dead. I want a feeling of something greater than just trudging through some crummy old tomb.

Being on the Arreat summit somewhat captured this essence of epicness, I think it was executed quite well given the limitations of the game engine. There was a sense of achievement finally reaching the peak of the mountain and looking down onto the plateau.

Immersiveness is also something that could be greatly improved for d3. I think playing act1 and 5 for the first time was the most immersive experience for me in Diablo2 (it was probably the music that did it for me). Half Life 2 was a game that really drew you in. It was the feeling for solitude and that false sense of security you had that really made it an immersive game. The mood and ambience of the environment was something I thought was perfected (particularly in the coastal regions - I absolutely loved the portion of the game in and around that bridge level). Moments like this could really make Diablo 3 a great game. These moments of solitude and peace, hearing nothing but the wind and the birds (a good suspense builder).

As for themes; Diablo 2 pretty much had it all covered. I'd like to see something like Skovos (even though that's not coming in vanilla D3). I love the Greek islands theme - looking out over azure waters. Obviously I'd like to see the high heavens, I think that could really be pulled off in the new engine.

One thing in particular I'd like to see are vast bustling cities; cities so huge you could get lost in them - with winding streets that lead into the slums or the overcrowded market districts; great courtyards in the middle of the city to towering keeps in the mountainside. Something that was never in Diablo 2 (well - it was done to an extent in act2 and 3) were crowds of NPC's walking the streets - simple non-interactive ones that give life to the city/town. It felt pretty strange having 12 odd people living in Lut Gholein, the "thriving port city".

Oh and one more thing; Pine forests. That'd be cool.

I disagree with you on the epic part. Epic has been done in so many games that I want to see as less of it as possible in DIII. Epic is a lie... fighting evil is never an epic battle. It's a very sad battle. I want Diablo to stay gloomy, melancholic, and dark.

In fact, what you're describing has little to do with epic. Epic is when a crowd of soldiers goes against a crowd of bad guys under flashy winning music or what not, and everyone is loud. I don't see anything epic about the bridge episode in Half-Life II, personally... it's very quiet.

I'm worried about ambient sounds. Diablo I was sort of all right in this respect, Diablo II... seemed to miss out greatly. Nothing is going on, it seems. You enter a jail, and nobody's there. Yes, people WERE tortured and what not, but they are not tortured NOW, when you enter. You walk around a jail, and it's quiet. No screams, sounds of chains, strange clicks and weird animal sounds that tell you: you're not alone around here, there are monsters abound. I think this part needs to be taken care of. There should be people dying in that jail. Maybe a few, just for the suspense.

There's no reason it still can't, while being momentous and awe-inspiring at the same time. I'd always wanted something to break the monotony of cramped, dark hallways and dungeons.

Epic can describe both things. Besides, I was making a point that the bridge level was immersive, not epic.

I liked the eerie silence of the jail, but I agree that Diablo II was lacking in many areas.

I completely agree. That would be nothing less than awesome! You should be caught up in the act so to speak. Not just arrive when it's all over.

I would like to see some more jungles, like Kurast only completely redone in beautiful 3D graphics. Mist, tropical plants, trees, undergrowth, ancient ruins - tropical thunderstorms? It would be a great environment.

Lots of ambient sounds as well.

Actually they are doing just this in the game! Wandering spirits in town, people being pulled into the abyss by creatures, and in dungeons you have randomize side quests.

lots of variation. Big forest,scary dungeons,and who knows what else. as long as i can bash all monsters, and can entertain myself

All I really want is at least one Act reminiscent of the beginning of Act V. With the "Siege" track playing, the last few desperate Barbarians trudging up the mountain, and the demonic entrenchments creating the atmosphere of a losing battle, while the player cuts a bloody path through the ranks to reach Shenk- that all created a great gameplay experience.

Oh, and they need to put in the Reizarfg. Secret office level?

I always wanted to have a battle in the heavens. One of my friends and I were hoping that the expansion for Diablo 2 would lead to some battling in heaven of course it didn't happen. I think there is definately potential in Diablo 3 for some segment of the game in heaven. Apart from heaven a bunch of varied places would be loved and judging from the concept art so far it looks like they intend on making this the most diversified Sanctuary yet .

I would like to go back into Hell and have more variety in Hell's environment like murky swamps with large beasts thrashing around in the mud and thorny forests with tortured souls hanging from the trees.
