PvP character balancing

The barbarian fury system looks like a lot of fun but the one problem I thought of with a system like fury is how big of a disadvantage a barbarian will be at pvp with a fury system. Most of his active skills require fury, which goes up from killing monsters, and then drains while not killing. It seems like during pvp he will only be able to use a small fraction of his skills. I don't think Blizzard intends on restricting classes from using any skills for pvp. So this is what it comes down to, what would be a good way of allowing barbarians to be able to use their full arsenal of skills in pvp?

I think one possible solution are "fury potions" that will give a certain amount of fury instantly with a cooldown attached to avoid spamming. Also perhaps a skill that requires no fury to use that could generate small amounts of fury from successfully attacking an opponent. Also another possible solution is to give barbarians a certain amount of fury at the start of a duel so he isn't restricted as much. I think that one solution will not be the only solution, I think many different solutions in conjunction will make pvp viable for a barbarian.

Re: PvP character balancing

Who's to say that pvp matches will be as short as they were in D2... Also maybe the rate at which Fury is generated for a Barbarian isn't restricted to just when you hit someone else. I sure do get a lot more "furious" when someone hits me than I do after I hit someone.

Re: PvP character balancing

It´s been mentioned that the barbarian gets fury when taking damage too, so I suspect that they´ll be a bit like warriors in WoW when it comes to PVP (though that is somewhat worrisome. I do hope they´re not group dependent and vulnerable to crowd control, as warriors are in WoW).

Re: PvP character balancing

Maybe they'll have a skill that lets them build a lot of fury but has a drawback like having to stand still/lose life, or maybe PvP barbs will have to a) start at zero, or b) fight monsters to build fury, then heal and begin duels.

Re: PvP character balancing

The Barb fury system sounds really cool. It seems fitting for a pvm enviroment, but for the pvp not so much...

Now we really dont know how blizz is going to impliment the system for pvp, but im assuming that there will be some changes. The fury system would be restricting.

I just dont see a solid good solution to the whole thing. Potions would also be annoying and a hindrance in my opinion. Waiting to be hit to increase your fury could prove fatal in a pvp enviroment(assuming pvp will be similar to d2). Even if pvp in d3 will be different than in d2, even if battles in d3 will be longer and more drawn out(that wouldnt be a bad idea imo) the fury system would still put the barb in a disadvantage in the start of the fight.

i dont know, im just voicing my opinion here...i guess we really dont know the impact the fury system will have in pvp untill more information is released. Who knows, it could work perfectly, it might not be a problem at all..

Re: PvP character balancing

Well, not all Barb skills require fury. I suspect most Barbs will use some "1 point wonder" non-fury skill to stun the enemy and/or get in close to get in enough hits to power up for the rest of his skills.

Rage skill to pump fury, but reduce hp, str, res or something. Or, it can be a battle cry :o

Re: PvP character balancing

I really think it will only be a major problem if the damage:HP ratio is as bad as it is in D2. If we can reasonably expect to be able to tank certain amount of damage, than fury system is go.

Re: PvP character balancing

hey, maybe the barb will have a significantly higher amount of hp then most of the other chars and to kinda balance it out they threw in the fury system..?

i could see that being possible, especially if his fury increases with damage taken

Re: PvP character balancing

I'm not really satisfied with any of these solutions, but I'll wait and see before offering any of my own. Simple fact is, if barb needs rage for mobility and they aren't able to start off with any, a mobile player should be able to never let a barb anywhere near them. I can't help but make GW comparisons here, with warriors' adrenaline system, but it really doesn't translate at all.
