Is that a direct insult to me?... j/k that's me ^.^
Aye, I see your dilemma. The Richard A Knaak books are an immense source for finding detailed origins and characteristics for many of the characters and places. It has been mentioned in interviews that he worked directly with Chris Metzen in setting the basis for the lore. They've announced that his novels are now the lore for the games. They'll set you up for who/what everything is and how their roles may play in the future of Diablo. However, many of the subjects mentioned with strong relevance to Diablo 3 have only been mentioned/introduced in the novels. Such as Imperius or the Angrius Council, whom will most likely take a large part in the story.
IT's also interesting to look at various interviews for some hints of lore. There's an interview around where the reporter asks Jay Wilson if there will be bosses who interact/fight with one another. Wilson's response was "definitely". However, he wouldn't mention as to who they are. From a game perspective, it could be anything or anyone, but that'd be mostly for show. From a lore perspective it'd have to be strong opponents they have had/will have a reason to confront one another. What comes to mind for me is possibly Imperius and a being of the Burning Hells like Belial/Azmodan. Or it could be one of the Primes versus an angel. Only time will tell the future motives....
I strongly recommend the Knaak books just because of relevance to story. The other books don't have much future content in them, but do provide some back story for current characters like Bartuc. Knaak is a moderate writer in story progression, but his presentation and description is fantastic. The details he gives are usually a clear cut picture in the mind. Also if you're interested in the lore, look directly at the manuals and games. Almost everything in those two can be used as a direct quote (with the given exception of the 'Pandemonium' events).
I really enjoy the wiki on this site, but it lacks in lore content. Everything else is top notch and amazing. I really admire the work the site members puts into it. Maybe I'll have to run through the manuals/game/books getting quotes and detailed pages for the wiki. But here's a good site for lore content.
