If Blizzard implements a pvp League/Ladder season type system in D3. I hope they do not award people with pvp specific gear.
Why?
Because pvp rewards and specific pvp items take away from creativity and individualism. Look at WoW and there pvp reward system for example. Pretty much everyone wears the same arena gear. Sure in D2 obviously lots of items were better for pvp aspect of the game and commonly used by everyone. However adding pvp reward gear will surley remove any point in using the regular items in game for pvp. Also it takes out the luck factor and ability to make good trades and get that rare one of a kind item. The only rewarda in a pvp league/ladder/ranking system should be your reputation and bragging rights. o yea and cash is cool if there are tournaments lol
I guess this fits in this topic as well. A key part of Diablo were *unique* items. Please do not turn everything in the game into items sets. Set items are ok in a small amount. Do not head down the road of WoW and turn everything into sets.
What I think, is that the rare items that you find in Diablo III should have a potential of being greater than any unique you can find - therefore creating an endless possibility of opponent's gear, and also creating a constant strive to find the best items possible.
Yes to cosmetic rewards (simply displaying some form of ranking after name would be plenty in that regard, glowy **** doesn't really appeal), no to rewards that give a competitive edge.
Yes to pvp-only international realm, too, which is the only one which should get a pvp ladder system.

And PvP rewards would be ideal...
We have a winner here this is exatly what made D2 Classic so damn good
And replayable this is the key to a good item system i wish somone whit a better written english could elaborate a bit more on this subject.
By the way the reason why lod sucked compared to D2 classic was that they made uniques the best items which resoulted in everybody used exatly the same gear and that completly killed all forms of strategy in regards to PVP.

That would be so sexy, ohh-god, my knees are weak i think ill sit down..

Agreed. Let players change their chars aesthetically, in some non-corny and cool way, then again corny is never bad : )
As long as there is no "compettive edge" thing going on.

Heres an idea, make "unrestrictable" items, different quality type and everything, completely random stats! (cost money to buy them since money wasnt really used in the old one). "unrestrictable" sword could have stats from like 1-2 bonus fire damage to something like lvl 35 might aura when equipped, 100% chance to cast a can of woopazz when struck, and 50% life steal!
I WANT A USE FOR GOLD, IM ALWAYS AT MAX FOR NO REASON!!!

Note that this is already the case. There are many theoretical rare that would outperform quite a few unique items - runewords might be a bit over kill, but still. The problem is finding them, and that could be solved quite easily be giving the better mods a higher change to spawn if they can spawn.
However, how beautiful as this may seem, I don't think it's all good. If you make everything rare depending, you get the problem that you can't make a random build, as you can't assume to find the items needed. Now with the uniques, you know that you can get item X that will work for build Y. with rares, you have to search for ages to find that specific item - or that is at least possible.
I believe that it would be best to aim for a balanced mechanism where the modest uniques and rare are the top tier. While once in a while, you find a rare that outperforms all uniques. And on top of that, i would be interesting to have some gear slots with less/less usefull uniques. A bit like rings/amulets for some builds. Some builds only use crafter/rare rings and amulets. And that good as long as you aren't forcing everyone to go and find rare items.
I like a rewarding system. The main problem I can think of that if it's really nice items for rewards, that will just make the pvp elite even elite-er, making it very hard for new/improving players... And if some items are only for the very elite since they are winning, that's not the pvp I want. I kinda like d2 pvp (well, it's a crappy system, and all dupes etc makes economy screwed up, and some people have perfcect gear wich would be impossible without all dupes etc.) for that fact that the players skill and adjusting your gear is a large part.
