I've got a few questions and a few observances to verify about shopping from Grizzy.
1) Despite that's Jarulf's guide only says that Grizzy has a max ilvl of 30, it seems there is a lower limit for qlvl's of base items and the prefix/suffix. The qlvl range of a base item is ilvl/4 to ilvl. Yet even a clvl 50 character can shop a flail which is qlvl 7. The same goes for lower qlvl prefix/suffixes. So it seems that after clvl 30, all items shopped for will have a base item qlvl between 7 and 30 and a prefix/suffix qlvl between 15 and 30.
2)From a basic warrior's standpoint, these are the best items available from...
Grizzy:
King's (Bastard) Sword of Haste
Awesome (Tower) Shield of the Tiger
Awesome (Full Plate) Armor of the Ages
Wirt:
King's (Bastard) Sword of Haste
Godly (Tower) Shield of the Tiger
Godly (Great) Helm of the Whale
Dungeons:
King's (Bastard) Sword of Haste
Awesome (Full Plate) Armor of the Lion
Obsidian Ring/Amulet of the Zodiac
3)So I guess that would mean the best pure get up, provided you weren't going for the leech or telekiller.
Helm: God's Helm of the Whale (Wirt)
Weapon: King's Sword of Haste/Speed (Grizzy, Wirt, or Dungeon)
Armor: Awesome Plate of the Lion (Dungeon)
Shield: Godly Shield of the Tiger (Wirt)
Rings/Amulet: 2xObsidian of the Zodiac, 1xGold of the Zodiac (Dungeon)
I just spent a bunch of time leveling up a character for better Grizzy shopping only to realize that a clvl 50 character won't differ from a clvl 31 character at Griswald's. I've been shopping for ages hoping for the King's Sword of Haste, but not luck yet, though I did find a King's Sword of Blood and a King's Sword of Gore. But would people agree with the gear choices above? And has anyone ever shopped a King's Sword of Haste? How long did it take you?
Are you sure that those items fall within the gold caps placed on Wirt and Griswold that allow them to be sold?
I spent a lot of time shopping at wirt and griswold and don't recall ever seeing items that good. I did see Wirt selling a king's dagger of haste once, though.

Yea, I'm pretty sure they do. Unless I screwed up the math. Grizzy has a $140,000 cap and Wirt has a $90,000 cap (but the price is increase 50% so you'll pay over that). Weapons, shields, and helms typically can't reach that max. It is only body armor that can be that expensive. And that's one of the main restricting factor in what armor are available in the game.
Those items are pretty rare, and definitely hard to find. But I've been shopping my butt off for a while now and these are the best that I've found:
King's (Bastard) Sword of Blood (+84%, +158%) - Grizzy
King's (Bastard) Sword of Gore (+83%,+163%,+10) - Grizzy
King's (Bastard) Sword of the Titans (+83%, +158%, +21) - Grizzy
King's (Bastard) Sword of the Ages (+79%, +158%) - Grizzy
King's (Bastard) Sword of Sorcery (+100%, +171%, +17) - Grizzy
Awesome Shield of the Tiger (20, +145%, +45) - Grizzy
Godly Shield of the Ages (20, +197%) - Wirt
Awesome Plate (74, +148%)
Blessed Plate of the Tiger (74, +105%, +46)
I've also found a few King's Axes of Haste/Speed as well as lots of King's Bastard Swords and Bastard Swords of Haste/Speed. So it seems that the possibility is there, it's just pretty rare. And for some reason, the King's prefix seems to be very rare and I don't know why. It's more than just having too many other options for a prefix, because I see Soldier's crap all the time, which can spawn on everything that King's can. However, there are only 14 suffixes (that I've counted) that can go on a Bastard Sword and two are what I'm looking for at Grizzy's. So it seems that anytime Grizzy is selling a King's Bastard Sword with a suffix, there is a 1 in 7 chance that it will be a King's Sword of Haste/Speed. Now I just have to get him to start selling King's stuff. The stingy jerk.
Oh, I just thought of rough way to calculate my chances, or at least how long it will take me. Typically speaking, I get about 5 King's items an hour when doing Grizzy runs. King's appears on 9 base items (Flail, Maul, Broad Sword, Bastard Sword, Two-Handed Sword, Great Sword, Broad Axe, Battle Axe, and Great Axe). Provided it has a King's Prefix only 45% of the time will it have a suffix. And if it has a suffix, there is a 1 in 7 chance it will be either Haste or Speed. So, each time I see a kings it will have a (1/9)*(.45)*(1/7) chance of being a King's Sword of Haste/Speed, which is about a .714285% chance (or 1 in 140). Yikes! That means that on average it will take me 28 hours of Griz running to find a King's Sword of Haste/Speed.
While is has been several years ago and "could" have changed in the patches since then, i have bought a bastard variety King's Sword of Haste from Griz before and so it is possible .....

Godly/tiger isn't possible on a shield, since godly is qlvl 60. pre/suf qlvls have to be within 50% of each other, and tiger is qlvl 21.
There actually aren't any good suffixes on godly shields. I used to wind up with "of the ages" mine in D1 days, though looking at the pre/suf list now, that shouldn't be possible either, since of the ages is only qlvl 25.
At any rate, I'd say awesome/tiger or even obsidian/tiger beat godly tower of nothing, assuming you've got high enough AC from your other gear that the loss on shield AC isn't going to hurt. Monsters have a minimum 30% to/hit in Hell, so it's not like you can get to the 95% untouchable D2 status.
Also, KSoH/S are buyable from Gris in Diablo. speed is qlvl 19, Haste is is qlvl 27, of gore is qlvl 25. King's is qlvl 28, so if you're seeing that, you should see all the others. It's just that there are a lot of possible suffixes.
On your gris armor selection, why awesome/ages? is awesome/tiger-lion too expensive? Those are readily available in Hellfire, at least, but they upped the price limit there, so maybe it's above the D1 threshold. I've put some hellfire shopping tips and screenshots of item buys on the wiki page now. Ob/zods are actually quite affordable. http://diablo2.diablowiki.net/D1_NPC...ntory_Strategy.
Personally, I preferred awesome/stars for armor, in the D1 days. I'd rather add mana, to/hit and damage rather than just hps, when warriors had quite a few of those already. By the same token,

How can you not go for a telekiller? Witches and mages aren't exactly uncommon in hell, and all the melee monsters are basically the same (and relatively easy), for a warrior. Swing swing swing and wait for them to get into range. I'd always take zod or heavens over +hps, since it just does more overall for the character. And gold/zod for one jewelry? I'd much rather have dragons/zod, if we're talking dream setup. You'll have way over 250% to/hit from a kings sword and your other +dex gear, and 30% to/hit from gold wouldn't make any real difference at that point.
I just checked my one Hellfire warrior. He's only level 28, with terrible jewelry. Moon/stars/heavens, a crown of the moon, etc. He'll add at least +50-60 to all when he gets better gear, and with an 88% to/hit king's sword (claymore) he's already at 198% to/hit.
Yea, KSoS or KSoH. It seems the Speed and Haste modifiers are exactly the same despite the implied difference.
Thanks for your help Flux. You seem to be a treasury of knowledge on DI. I'm not playing in Hellfire by the way, so that's why I said Awesome of the Ages was the limit, everything else is too expensive. Actually, that might be a little too expensive, now that I think about it. But the best you can find from monsters is Godly of Lion.
I also happen to have a Godly Shield of the Ages, so that 50% qlvl range is right except that the lower end can't be more than qlvl 25. So, if you're clvl 30, wirt will sell qlvl mods from 25 to 60. So, you're right 21 from Tiger is too low but 25 from the Ages works. I've got an Awesome Shield of the Tiger and a Godly Shield of the Ages and I was planning on comparing the two of them once I got all my other gear in line.
I was just approaching this from the pure melee perspective. I agree that the mage build is probably the best overall route, but you can always switch out gear depending on the level so I was focusing on the hand-to-hand situations.
Ok, so it seems I was low-balling it on the predictions of how long it will take Grizzy to supply you with a KSoH/S. I've improved my shopping technique and payed careful attention to how often he hands out King's items. It seems it's more like 10 King's items per hour (not 5 like I said before). That means that on average, it will take about 14 hours of hardcore shopping to find this holy grail. Also, from this we can figure out the basic chances per trip to his shop. I usually make about 220 trips per hour. So, for a character level 29 or higher, Griswald has a 1 in 3080 chance to sell you a King's Sword of Haste or Speed. Of course, that's experimental probability, so it could vary, but I think that's pretty close to actual.
Oh, and thanks Flux for pointing out that Hell enemies have a minimum of a 30% chance to hit you and chance to it is a smaller deal. Here's what I found--and keep in mind this isn't for Hellfire, though that doesn't vary too much. No monster has AC over 165. The total chance to hit is:
50+Dex/2+ToHit+clvl+WarriorBonus[20]-EnemyAC.
That means that a clvl 30 Warrior with KSoH(76-100) and base dex(60) will have:
50+30+76to100+30+20-165=41 to 65% chance to hit
Compare that too a little more seasoned Warrior: clvl 35 & 90 dex
50+45+76to100+35+20-165=61 to 85% chance to hit
Keep in mind this is the most armored enemy, but most enemies in Hell have close to 150 AC. So, I think Gold can significantly enhance you're killing ability. But, I suppose I was originally thinking about the "best gear." And once you get the "best gear" you'll have at least 100 dex and a good King's so Gold wouldn't be necessary.
Then there is the matter of how much armor your character should have.
The enemy chance to hit goes up to 250 and the final 'to hit' is equal to:
30+EnemyToHit+2*(mlvl-clvl)-Dex/5-AC
So my clvl 30 character for instance with his Awesome Plate, Godly Shield, and Gotterdamerung will have 183+58+60=301 AC and 88 Dex against a Blood Knight in hell mode:
30+250+2*(60-30)-88/5-301=22%
That character is pretty highly focused on AC and while that might not matter on dungeon level 16 which is always at least 30%, it could make a difference in other. But I guess it's all a big balancing act in the end.
Also, some good and bad news on the shopping spree.
Good news: As I said, I realized Grizzy hands out King's twice as much as I thought he did.
Bad news: KSoH/S have only moved from insanely rare to ridiculously rare.
Good news: I finally found a King's Sword of Speed!
Bad news: It's on a two-handed sword.
Good news: I found a King's Flail of Haste with +100% to hit, and +170% damage
Bad news: It's so close to what I want that it makes me even more crazy.
Don't you think it's funny that the best one hand weapon in the game only deal 30% more damage per hit than a punch. Maybe that's 100% to hit Flail is pretty good after all.
I would have bought the flail, especially 'cause of its stats, and gone and gotten some more gold before I went shopping again.
Also note that nothing can drop Godly in the dungeon. The best prefix possible is Emerald at qlvl 34. I believe Holy is qlvl 35, so unfortunately you miss out on that one too.
The standard accepted "best shield" for a warrior is a Awesome Shield of the Tiger. According to Bolty's guide, though:
"It is possible to get a better shield - a Holy Shield of the Mammal. This is very difficult, however, since due to the method Diablo uses to determine what can be sold at what character level, a Holy Shield of the Mammal can only be purchased when your character is levels 18-21, from Wirt. This makes this shield VERY rare, since Wirt is your only source for this item."
As far as full plate mail, I don't know the exact reasoning but I am almost 100% certain that you cannot legitimately obtain a Godly full plate of anything. I'm pretty sure Awesome full plate of the mammal/stars/harmony is the best you can get.
