Word from Jay Wilson today, indirectly in an odd piece piece on Kotaku w/o a direct quote on the matter.

So, assuming it's correct, that means just the Barb returns, new and improved, while the other 4 in the initial game launch are new. (Or at least as new as the WD is, i.e. evolved from the Necromancer.)

I can already imagine the massive "which char should return in the first expansion" threads, once we know the 5 chars in the initial game.

I think this is great. It will allow them to make more creative character design decisions without having to preserve current abilities from any existing archetypes.

Although this does nothing to solve the mystery of which arechtypes will return. And it is further evidence that the barbarian tribes will play a crucial role in the story.

Yes and no I would say...The barbarian tribes have a crucial role in the story but according to the interview the main reason for bringing back our ol'barb was that the char designers was unhappy with him, not close enough to his potential apparently?, while as a comparison the Necros was deemed a finished/perfected character so they are out.
