I have been thinking about this since i saw the job posts on blizzard.com. (They specificly mention DOTA) Blizzard seems to like the DOTA gameplay and with Diablo 3 they have a chance to create something similar, i mean its all there, the isometric PoV, items, gold etc.
Personally i would like to see them try it, allthough theres obviously a few questions to answer, such as: Do you create a new character with each new game or use your own? then there is things as teaming up, it would probably have to be done as in WC3 but i think they have plans in that direction with the new battle.net
Any thougts?
EDIT: Found several threads with the mention of DOTA, but guess i was too sloppy to check, but now it has its own thread atleast.
I've always liked the AoS style. If it's in Diablo 3, I'm guessing it'll be against npcs.
Luckily Starcraft 2 will be there for all our AoS and TD needs. Also, I heard there's some kind of military strategy game that comes with it. Something about aliens or something.
So... I've been playing DotA for 4 years... and I've been admin of the main site for 2 years (dota-allstars.com).
So, DotA style gameplay would need to be reworked entirely for it to work, the entire farming aspect would be gone, so basically, what is stopping people from just pushing on level 1? I guess you'd just have mass team battles from level 1 and you'd somehow gain morale boosts if you push up?
You lack imagination. Nothing needs to be reworked. The basic prerequisites (gold, buying items, leveling up, monsters, buildings) are still there. And even so, a direct port of DotA would be boring.
The general idea would need to be transfered, not the details, and balanced for separately. I don't see this happening, however. It would be developing an entire new game separately from the main one. Although, if there was an x-pack focused on developing PvP, this would be nice to consider.
I just don't think DotA would be fun on Diablo 3 and how unoriginal it would be to have a hero defense in the Diablo series. There are thousands of hero defense games in Warcraft III and that is where they belong.
Haha I love Dota. The only reason I bought warcraft was to actually play Dota. Don't really care for RTS game that much. Starcraft II does look amazing though!
As far as integrating it into Diablo III here are some basic additions / changes I would make.
- Make the map itself smaller and place objectives closer together.
- Vary monster difficulty. For instance, lets say a player joins team 1, you may see something as follows: "Player Bob joins team 1, the opposing minions grow stronger." If one team had more players, the opposing teams minions would thusly be stronger. This would allow players to enter and leave the game with no real impact upon the balance of the game.
- Replace character item upgrades with potions or stat changing abilities. When killing your foes or destroying an objective you would receive gold or some form of currency which could be used to buy potions or objects from vendors. The stat changing abilities may only last short durations but players would be able use them at anytime to gain a significant advantage.
Example: Player Bob drinks a damage potion, increasing his physical damage by 500% for 30 seconds.
Although your limited to only 5 classes, I think that wide variations in skills would occur which would be a very unique experience.
- Replace towers with "Boss" like mobs. Possibly like shenk the overseer from act 5. These boss entities would then summon other mobs (number and strength dependent on what you have taken over of your foes territory).
- More on items. Merchants would sell potions or other stat and or damage modifying items to players (like stated above). For more team based players, and or those who enjoy PvE action slightly more, additional items could be purchased. Weapon upgrades for your mobs, or items that modify your "Boss's" abilities and other players near him.
Example 1: Player Bob purchases "Aura of Jordan", all players near Boss X receive 10% increased maximum mana and 1 to all skills.
Example 2: Player Bob purchases "Skin of the Flayed One" , friendly mobs now receive 5% armor bonus and 15% fire resistance.
Combinations of different items or auras could make some mobs "immune", and or very resistant to certain elements or physical damage. It's up to players to strategically equip themselves and theres allies (mobs and boss's) with appropriate items.
- Diversity! Since games could have random players, it may be possible for a team to be composed of a majority of barbarians for instance. To counter act this, you would increase the armor, and physical resistance on your allies. The barbarians in turn would have to strategically combat this defensive maneuver.
