How many of you are just playing around for the sake of nostalgia? Or are some of you starting to get genuinely addicted to this old game?
I started to just play for fun. The game felt clumsy and slow. After a while though, all of its flaws have become unique characteristics and beloved features.
I just went to caves with my rogue. It was so scary. I had bunch of goatmen swarming me everywhere. I felt really claustrophobic being able to only walk. After I cleared those, I exchanged fire with goatmen archers - only to be surrounded by illusion weavers! With the eerie music (woman voice whispering distressed words to my ear) I felt my pulse go up. I managed to escape the situation barely and even got a nice chain mail with me.
As I wandered to clear the catacombs another time, I realized I'm genuinely addicted to 11-year old game.
it's just the same for me, and I especially agree on what you said about 'flaws' becoming unique and beloved characteristics. Some of the design decisions like not being able to run or even the really dark theme and the colour palett of the game really seem a bit strange at first or at least not catered to appeal to as many people as possible. Maybe the designers of diablo1 had more freedom in what they were doing, considering noone could possibly know what a success diablo should become, or maybe there weren't so many rules, dos and don'ts of game design as there are nowadays. This is something I like about many old games, like ultima 8 or Ecstatica. They seem more like the "baby"of only a few persons, implemented in a "well if you don't like it, don't play it"-manner. I think those games werent made to be perfect or at least there wasnt so much pressure involved as it is now.. but as it is with many things, imperfection has its beauty :-)
I plan on doing a Diablo Ironman..with "The Dark" (mod) installed. Me and some friends will enter the cathedral, never to return to town again before diablo has not met his end =D
Addicted again. I've had the music running through my head all day, and I ended up having to download it.

I was addicted for two solid days, total, this time. It certainly isn't going to threaten my D2 record. But I play D1 maybe once every couple of years, same with ufo: enemy unkown. I guess a lot of it is the nostalgia, but something about them both is just.. timeless.
I really like the atmosphere of D1, I think it is really great. The music is outstanding, the sound effects are great and the graphics are really crisp for what they are. D2 graphics are much worse, because they had so much stuff they had to compress all of it, which took a lot of the detail out. Unfortunately D2 came out before DVDs for computer games was common, and so they had to cram as much as they could onto the 3 CDs (Peter Hu said that uncompressed the graphics were about 6gb).
I havn't played a single session of D2 since i installed D1 again! I just love the change of pace. The atmosphere, the slow walk speed, the constant need to get into the right position (playing a Warrior) or you're dead. In D2 there is alot of open areas, in D1 there is none. You need to retreat, use doorways, corners and walls to your advantage. I also like that archers are such a pain in the ***, since they should be alot of problem for a melee oriented char.
I also like the fact that gold plays a huge role, you can buy alot of awesome weapons and armor, as long as you have enough gold.
I just get a kick out of finding a Jade Shield of the Stars in the shop and then going down in the dungeon, trying to raise enough money to buy it.
I also play SP in MP, so it's kinda like semi-hardcore. Since if you die, you drop all your stuff and need to get them back! That adds alot to the excitement.

Hmmm, good point. The walking speed really does make D1 a much more strategic game than D2, I'd never considered it in that way. Combined with the lack of open spaces, you can't just flee danger and re-position yourself quickly - if you get surrounded you're usually toast.
Diablo 1 is n1 for me, but i play D2 most.I play D1 sometimes it is for nostalgia, sometimes make new time records or just fun with killing Diablo or wanna met again unique dark knight
My time record not much but 6 hours, Rouge with good drops. I tried even just put magic on sorcerer and get armageddon + mana shield .. i was nearly immortal if i dont miss drink mana when mana empty xD
After again and again playing, one thing is really interesting for me.. How could Warrior block Diablo's armageddon spell ?
In deeper on our mind D1 will be remain as a classic with several reasons, even we play D3 like we lost ourselves, but we will not betray D1 =) It was same feelings when i played first time D2. Everytime when I visit Tristam at D2 or kill Diablo again at D2, same music got me goose bumps
PS: After long time only watching this great website, im now a member and, well first post sended Hope there is not a single word i used against rules and sorry my caveman english xD Good Luck all
i just started a sorc and completed d1 for the first time with that class, it realy brought back all the old memories from when i was playing it as a kid 5-6 years back, i found myself loving the music and even searching the net to learn the tristram song on guitar, don't get me wrong i love d2 but the creepy vibe to d1 is far better imo.
