There were many references in D2, (Have not played D1 to know), to items from Lord Of The Rings, mythril for example.
I am curious to know what other sources people would like to see referenced in D3. Personally I would be interested to see references to The Wheel of Time Series.

Whether it originated from LOTR or not, Mithril has been bandied about and used in so many references you can longer really call it an LOTR reference.
As for your suggestion for WOT references - as much as I am a fan of Mr Jordan's work (may he rest in peace), his world, and that of Diablo just do not work together; they're totally different in all their philosophies and workings. Similarly with LOTR, how many Elves/Dwarves/Hobbits do you see running around in the world of Diablo? None...
And don't get me started on "One ring to rule them all" *coughStoneofJordancough*
I was not suggesting a storyline match, simply a nod in the direction of various book series out there. Something along the lines of a "Commander Vimes Truncheon", (A policeman from the discworld series by Terry Pratchett), which could be the name of unique, etc.
Certainly there would be no way I would try in ANY storyline into Diablo, it has it's own and should stay that way.
But the odd reference here an there to other things could be fun.
There are odd and ambiguous references here and there. Like Doombringer is very close to Moorcock's Stormbringer. And don't get me started about the Diggler. But the writers/designers who work at blizz have to be careful that they don't infringe on anyone's copyright. They can draw inspiration from other sources, but they can't outright steal.
Well, LOTR have had such great influence on RPG games, and no matter what anyone say.
Blizzard does not intend to steal from anyone, but players will always blame 'em.
Diablo 3 will not be anything like LOTR, hopefully, it would ruin the game.. i'm a huge LOTR fan myself, but it just doesn't belong in the Diablo world.
The copyright for names makes me laugh a bit. A lot in this game is taken from myths, legends, books, history, nature, previous products.. why not to obtain a great different result?
Doombringer then is just an easy gothic word. If I say something like Hellhound FlameCaster, SnakeRat PlagueSpawner, KnightLord LightBringer I'm just inventing joining words.
Surely that idea comes from the past, but I bet nowadays you could find names like that in many other medieval/gothic products (books, games, movies). It's a bit clichè but effective (if someone manages to change lexicon, basic races or locations is a genius)
LOTR is a milestone for the fantasy genre, so it's obvious that a lot comes from it

Perhaps. Of course you could easily say the same thing about Warcraft's Frostmourne. It has a name very siimilar to Mournblade, Stormbringer's sister sword. Naturally, it's just a name, but it's also coincidentally a soul-stealing runeblade (pure happenstance!) wielded by a very elric-looking Arthas.
Moorcock has a pervasive influence over much of fantasy. He's the anti-Tolkien.
Well, I must say I didn't know Moorcock, so I cannot tell exactly.
If what you state is true I can understand your disappointed, because hidden references are not real homages but just copies due to lack of imagination.
Anyway it's not even possible to be fully original as new things are always built over past things. When you create also it's difficult to remember who inspired what and difficult to admit at the end.
Maybe something has been copied, but the result is a completely different and original product.
Surely I would find nicer and more honest if they could add a line in the credits to remember the author who inspired them, but I don't think it will happen much (or did someone read them lol).

I consider things like the Doombringer sword a friendly nod by the Blizz team to the people who have inspired them. It's all in good fun. I remember smiling when I first discovered that Doombringer was a 'champion' class sword in homage to Elric, the eternal champion. Much like other weapons are a friendly nod to Tolkien.
If you have yet to read Moorcock's Elric saga, I heartily recommend it. It is one of the true great epics of the fantasy fiction genre.

That's EXACTLY what I was talking about when I opened the topic. Some friendly nod's to some of the get series out there, like what has been done in the past. I don't think it should impinge on the story, just a light-hearted moment in the middle of carnage
