Item abilities? (mace vs. blade)

I remember when I was younger playing D1 and feeling like crushing weapons such as maces were better for skeletons and zombies, while blade weapons were better for other types.

Is there anything actually unique about any weapon types? Is there anything else cool to know about D1 in terms of items and gameplay that isn't actually written anywhere?

Cheers

Jarulfs Guide to Diablo is hands down the most comprehensive resource you will find about Diablo. It should have your answer.

Yes, I remember Jarulf's Guide to Diablo! It was very impressive! I think I even printed the whole thing out and spiral-bound it for reference! Now, where is it I wonder ...

Re: Item abilities? (mace vs. blade)

Maces were definitely better against some opponents, including skeletons and stone cursed foes.

IIRC, it was either 150% damage or double damage, and it was sufficient a bonus that as a mage who relied on stonecurse to battle triple immunes, I liked to carry a combat mace, and switch it with my staff or dreamflange to break statues more quickly.

Of course, Jarulf's guide ftw.

Re: Item abilities? (mace vs. blade)

iv'e been trying to remember the bonuses, and the bugs. blunt weapons do 50% bonus damage to undead, IIRC. I think swords do extra to fleshy monsters; at least it's seemed that way to my warrior; he was killing hidden and goatmen in 1 hit around lvl 4-8, and needed 6 or 8 for zombies/skeletons/etc.

Fireballs are bugged and do extra damage from the explosion, well above their listed amount. Elemental does less, or maybe just the listed, which is why it's so much less effective than fireball, even though the listed damage is identical. There were lots more such things that everyone knew in the pre-d2 days, but that are now arcane knowledge.

Re: Item abilities? (mace vs. blade)

the RUMORS were that:

1. mace type (blunt weapons) do 50% more than normal damage to undead type monsters.

2. sword type do 50% more than normal damage to beast (any non demon/undead) type monsters.

3. axe type do 50% more than normal damage to demon type monsters

these may or may not be correct as they are just the rumors. see below for the "likely"
truth
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
for the (probably) actual facts see jarulf's guide.

i'm not sure if i can post the link to the site its on and am too lazy and don't wanna bug a mod either so if u can't find jarulf's guide on your own, pm me and i'll give u the link in pm.

Re: Item abilities? (mace vs. blade)

Mace weapons does 50% more damage to undead and 50% less damage to animals.
Sword weapons does 50% more damage to animals and 50% less damage to undead.
Axes deal the same damage to all types of enemies.

There's no extra bonus to stone cursed monsters when using any weapon, but stone cursed monsters will have 0 AC so you will hit them more often.

Civerb's Cudgel does 3 times damage against demons. There's also an axe with the property, but it's not as useful since you can't use a shield with it. Also IIRC it's bugged so you can only find it in singleplayer, and it morphs the next game you make.

The axe is bloodslayer and it can be found in mp on butcher runs on nm or hell difficulty. It is a 2 handed weapon like you said, plus it brings all your spells down a level. Civerbīs, though doing less damage, is better.
