I've been playing some myself, the past couple of weeks. I went on a D1 kick last year, in the weeks before the hgl beta began, and found it amusing for a bit. You've got to pace yourself; there's no running and you can't take on multiple monsters at once (in most situations) and it's dangerous; any 2 or 3 individual monsters can kill you if they get the first hit in.
I'm playing hellfire, since it made a lot of improvements to the basic game. Those don't much include the 2 new dungeons, since they pretty much suck (the tile sets and the monsters in them), but fast walk in town, more items for sale, oils, a few more interesting shrines, instant access to all dungeons on hell difficulty SP, etc.
the thing that seems less fun long term is the lack of magic find, and that item types don't scale up. There aren't any excep or elite items, and while you can sort of do boss runs; heading straight down to Lazarus and then gorash on 16, you're as likely to find a dagger or short sword from them as a bastard sword or full plate mail. the modifiers do scale up, at least, so you don't get useless low level mods on the useless low level items you find from high level bosses.
The funny part was me struggling last week to make a new sorcerer, and remember how to play him properly. It's funny since I wrote a huge d1 sorcerer strategy/play guide years ago. Meant to do one for rogues too, since I played them more, but never quite got around to it, and I've lost the tricks of the trade now.
When I dug out my D2 and LoD CDs for a nice reinstall (and subsequent horrible addiction), I noticed my old Diablo CD as well... so tempting, but I know I'll be disappointed in the long run, so I'll just let nostalgia take care of my D1 needs.
Me and a friend plan to play thru Diablo 1 and then 2 a week or so before D3 comes out. We have preordered it already so when it comes we will be thrilled and in the right diablo mood.
Saw some videos on youtube of people playing Diablo and it still looks great.
If i can find my D1 CD again, i'll have to play through it once more. Of course, i'll mod it to make the creatures twice as hard, since that always makes it a truly hellish experience
Heh..yeah I've dusted off DI..and I'd been meaning to try more DII again lately..geeze I miss the old gang..but..oh well. Well the announcement gave me more of an urge to D2..and I did play some D1 as well...need to do more D1 actually...
I actually played through it again not long ago and it was very difficult. It was balanced somewhat with the save-anywhere system, but the monsters were still tough to kill. I found myself retreating to a corner in Hell (the place, not the difficulty - this was on normal) so that only three enemies could be attacking me at any time. I never even attempted nightmare and hell difficulties.
Diablo II has some awesome features, but in my opinion you can't beat the music, enemies and atmosphere of the original.
A few days after the Diablo III announcement I broke out the CD, and from then I've slowly been making my way down into the dungeon. Currently I'm on the final level (in normal), but the regular monsters are beating me up, so it's slow going. Apparently the game thought I was a warrior, not a rogue, as can be seen by the uniques I've found! >_<

Agreed. Tristram in particular is just fantastic. I've even found myself lounging around town once and a while and listening to the music.
