Diablo is all about bashing monsters and chopping hem in half. While we are giving a lot of thought on the gameplay, characters, and skills, we can not forget about the monsters and demons. Without them, there IS no Diablo!
One monster I am particularly happy to see returning is the Goatmen. Why? Goatmen represent lust, or lechery (which is one of the 7 Deadly sins).
I think blizzard should not base their demons on random monster aspects and looks (giant lizards, rats, dog like or rock men). Hopefully we wont see much of those (some are ok), however, they should get inspired from history, religion, and mythology, and representation as well. A lot of the monsters should mirror off evil and sin.
Silent hill uses representation for their monsters. http://silenthillorigins.com/silenth...newmonster.jpg This is an image of one of the monsters in Silent Hill that represents confinement. Now, each monster should also match the environment but should also have a meaning. That is why you don't see goatmen in Act 2.
One monster I would like to see in particular is something that represents innocence lost. I'm no artist so unfortunately I can't sketch anything for you, however I do have an idea. In the movie The Excorcist, the girl ran down the stairs with her hands and feet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-4f_NMUxcY It would be cool if they replicated a monster in that manner.
7 deadly sins would be pretty fun themes for minor bosses, I'd prefer Diablo didn't draw too directly from mythology, history or real world religions however.
I don't recall goatmen in act 2. Did you mean slayer cats? Either way you know what I mean. And of course they wouldn't steal directly from mythology, hence the word "inspiration." But rather in the manner of monsters having a meaning than just... beasts and things you kill. Simple monster creations just don't have that feeling when you see them (zombies). While others look like they have more of a demonic or evil purpose/look (IOW. why they appear they as they do {Radament and monsters alike}). Perhaps not all the monster should have this aspect, but a nice amount of them, say the minions of the bosses themselves. I know what you're saying, I'm just trying to clarify if fully understand whats in my head, haha.
Are Fallen back? I hope so, can't get enough of killing those cowardly creatures.
There should be monsters that give certain classes trouble. Say like most undead are hardly affected by poison, there should be things that have hard skin and give melee fighters a run for their money. Im sick of Paladins and Barbarians raping everything in hell while a Sorceress has trouble.
I think it is better for maps/dungeons in the game to have random BUT theme specific monsters spawning.
Yes, I want it similar to Diablo classic.
I do not like to idea of reusing the same monster, like in this case, Act 5 of D2LOD, in nightmare and hell modes, mostly in the later maps ( Crystalline Passage and upwards).
Agree whole heartily, personally the change of monsters in ACT 5 SERIOUSLY detracted from the fun. Those had been some of the most fun monsters in the game and to have them replaced with annoying spine quills...
I agree monsters are the best part in diablo for sure!
I for one love monsters who has special (unique) powers that no other monster has.
Like burrow, teleport, pain mirror, curses, corpse explosion, electricity control, ice control, fire control, lust, greed, Rebirth, implantation, corruption of mind, stamina drain, health drain, mana drain, mana burn ect.
Monsters from mythology should be there but not in their true mythologic appearances.
For example:
Antaeus is in greek mythology the son of Gaia and Neptunes and is just a giant man that regenerates when touching his mother Gaia (The earth) in diablo Antaeus could be a Death Mauler variant or a giant Trapdoor spider that regenerates when burrowing underground.
Argus is another example, which is in true mythology a giant covered in eyes, in diablo argus could be a beholder-like creature that uses his sight abilities to spot you even when you're invisible.
Echidna would replace the Vile Mother monsters, and the minotaur is already covered very good in Diablo 2 as Moon, Blood and Hell lords, talk about Sylla and Charybdis? Tentacle beasts/River Watchers would cover those.
I just hope they bring my favorite creatures back, Gargoyles and Succubi.
Since it seems like there will be random, weaker mercenaries perhaps scattered throughout the game, I would like to see something like the Belialist... a vicious demon that takes the form of a man (or woman) to trick you.
They could even choose different times to revert to their old form. Like sometimes they'll do it right after you click them (to get them to go with you), and other times they'll travel and fight with you just like normal... then change halfway through a fight.
I miss Gargoyles, Hidden, and Acid Beasts from D1. The fallen are a franchise staple, but the D1 versions (devilkin, etc) were a lot nastier, even without the shamans. The bugs in D2 bothered me a bit, didn't make 100% of sense, but I suppose if I'm going to run with the quill rats and any other beast-type, I may as well take the bugs on too.
A bit off topic, but completely on the beast topic: Was anyone else upset that the necromancer's biggest pets weren't undead at all (golems)? I wanted like a giant made of corpses? I hope the pets in D3 get bigger (not as big as the bosses though).
