but in D2 when you place a saphire into a sword, the sword turns blue and when you put a ruby inside the same sword it'll turn red (last color will overlap)
but in D2 when a sword is ice enchanted you see frost around it, and when that hammer the barb was using was fire enchanted you see the axe on fire
so if you put a ruby and sapphire in the same weapon, will it turn into some purple mist?

As for the actual question, I don't know for sure but it will certainly be better than the silly color changing blade in d2.
Either they have a few options of how to do it:
Option 1) display only the most efficacious element, the one with the highest average damage.
Option 2) simply display both shader effects. I don't think they will "overlap" it will just look like little blueish and redish particles coming off the weapon.
Baldurs gate on ps2 did the dual element thing on weapons pretty well, i had a sword which the lightning zoomed around the blade and whenever you swang snow flakes fell off. look pretty cool
I think it's all rather subjective. Different game do different things for blades.
Baldur's Gate and other IE games did the blade colour thing. So did Diablo 2. Why? Probably because it looked half-decent, and was all the 2D engine could render.
Dungeon Siege did particle effects. The good ones approximated fire or snow flakes falling off weapons. But I'm not sure whether this is much of an improvement.
The best so far has certainly been Baldur's Gate 1's flame blades, which actually had a sword which had a blade that was on fire.
I think it's a good question. For me, I don't care much at all about the art in the background, but I care a great deal about all things we interact with and what we're looking at for hundreds of hours.
The way I would do it simply not allow fire and ice on the same weapon. This would add challenge. You must decide which one to go with. You can have the fun strategy of having a fire blade in one weapon slot and an ice blade on your switch, or dual wield with one of each. Or maybe have an array of elemetal weapons in your stash. I'd like for there to be other impossible combos on one weapon, like poison can't go with cold because the poison would freeze and not get delivered. Lightning can be combined with anything, but the total lit damage is limited on weapons, that sort of thing.
