I mean no offense by this, but some of the ideas for the name are too...
either childish, mediocre, or too generic
"cleric"
"battle mage"
"dark knight"
"thief"
too common
I'm not saying I could make a better name, in fact I'm one of the worst people to make names, but I would still put a good amount of time in name making.
Here is a class I would make
-Helion, a mischievous person
Abilities: uses deceitful abilities, allowing him to pass through the enemy unnoticed, great at avoiding damages, specializes in quick close range attacks. Basically he is a newer generation of the original D2 assassin.
I know it may not be the best of names, but it does show more originality than "cleric" or "thief"
Re: you guys GOT of think of better names for classes
The problem is picking a name that fits into the lore. Kind of hard when you don't even know the lore lol. And I'm sure stuff like Dark Knight and Battle Mage were more of class ideas than the final name.

Honestly, the only name that could qualify as original for an RPG setting is Amazon. And possibly the Witch Doctor..
well the first d2 was made in the 90s, and games back then weren't as complex as the ones today, so having warrior, rogue, sorcerer for a name you can't really blame them lol
i haven't seen necromancer, paladin, druid used as name very much (some i never seen used at all) in the 90s so i thought it was a unique and good name
Re: you guys GOT of think of better names for classes
You have a real grasp of the english language....
Like the last poster mentioned the previous names aren't so unique either. Though one thing I would point out is that they all have some kind of background that relates to some place in the world or some kind of sanctuary setting. Thus you don't see "Knight" because that really could be anything from anywhere. "Cleric" and "Thief" as well.
Units from warcraft - Archmage, Blade Master, Shadow Hunter, Beserker, Spell Breaker, Warden it's all going to be something like that.

Paladin, druid, and necromancer are hallmark Dungeons and Dragons classes.

I laughed at that, I know it is just a mistake but it is funny saying the first Diablo 2 (rather then saying D1 or even just D)
with regards to the thing about classes, it would be nice to have some more unique law related classes. For example using things like Knights of Zakaroom (or something to that effect) to describe a paladin, Rathma Cultist for a nec. This would add a bit of flavour to the characters played (although the names could get a bit long.
