I know how everyone hates the idea of D3 being anything like WoW so i already expect some flaming for this... but i was wondering what people would think about having a similar pvp option in D3 as the arena in WoW. I don't care for extra items, a rank may even be unnecessary, but i just really like the idea of getting a friend or two together to have an epic battle against 2 or 3 strangers. I'm sure i could always just join a "team duels" game but this would ensure fair play, no outsiders, and a different terrain. This system could be implemented over existing PVP rules like hostility, or whatever system blizzard chooses to go with
Anyone remember the rumor mill back in the day that blizz would implement an arena in v1.08,1.09,1.10?
Who says an arena would have to be just certain areas? you could just specify "arena" as you make the game and the game would not spawn any monsters, and maybe all WPs or whatever could be available.. (or maybe not.. that might spoil).
as far as HC dueling.. you guys are crazy. that is true hard core.
I think that the epic blood moore battles were way better than anything an arena could provide. Arenas are just too structured for general PvP to be any fun unless you are having a tournament with significant prizes.
But I wouldn't expect to see an arena in D3 simply because it wouldn't make sense for the plot. Why would there be spectator sports in a world that is facing an invasion from hell and is desperate? Your character (the hero) is the world's last hope, so they wouldn't be pinning the hero's against eachother in an arena. In the previous diablo games all the NPC's had an aura of helplessness and despair. I think this will carry over to D3.
Maybe they could include some sort of additional gambling feature. One of the towns you camp in (or maybe more) has an arena and you can gamble on fight outcomes or games going on as a way to accumulate gold. This would make it easy to blend this in with the game. Player A challenges Player B, so they go to (placeholder) Lut Gholein and fight to the death in the arena. For HC we could implement a system of forced loot in HC, or if people didn't want to enable this, we could allow looters in the town to come and "drag the body out of the arena" and the winner would attain a share of the gold winnings.
With a basic house edge on the gambling system and a current ranking system, the house would constantly bring in gold as people bet to try and attain profit and thus the "gladiators" could always get paid.

It doesn't necessarily have to have anything to do with the plot. It could just be a minigame sort of thing, for those who choose to utilize the feature.
One of the main reasons i bring this up is because from what i remember from dueling there were a bunch of people that would camp the town entrance, come out and throw a few guided arrorws / orbs / etc and then run back into town. Or the entrance would always be guarded by people or traps. Sure you could go to a WP but sometimes people would camp those. Or... you would be fighting someone and then another player would walk out and kill you or the other person. Although i do want that type of dueling to be available for occasional fun, it could be great to have a more team based fair dueling system. I really like the idea of having an arena for each act
You should try HC duelling, especially Ironman contests. Eight people level to level 9, grab whetever stuff they can find in act 1 normal during that time, shop a bit, hostile up and then enter say, the very first level of the Tower in the black Marsh, and only one comes out. Setting loot is also an option during such a fight, so quick movers might be able to cannibalize opponents gear after their death and maybe gain one or two items. Nothing as hectic as eight people fighting to the death in a confined space Anything goes, and alliances and teamplay are encouraged, as is breaking the alliances at the most inconvinient times.
