I don't think it will be part since i think the story of D3 will be different than that from D2. But perhaps blizz will make a new thingie in which you can craft?

I trust they'll be able to manoeuvre something into the plot to make it re-appear.
Cain: "There once was a glorious adventurer, who had quite a treasure in that horadric cube..."
Um yeah. I'm pretty freaking sure that Cain would have salvaged the cube once the adventurer retired/died/whatever - it's part of Cain's heritage.
That said I believe Blizzard said they know we like that sort of stuff and they'd make sure something similar gets put in if not the original cube.
Sorry for the OT, but I love your Bernard Black av!
and yes, I'm sure there will be some magical, dimension-twisting super gear re-jigging box of tricks in DIII - or maybe an entirely new way of crafting, like nominated NPCs who can craft items for you (think Baldur's Gate, or an imbue quest that you could use every time you have the right ingredients to use it)
The functionality of the horadric cube is great - added storage, transmutation recipes - but I'd rather see a few extra squares on the inventory itself and just use an npc for transmutation purposes.
I think the Horadric Cube was really annoying in Diablo II. I only want my original inventory to be larger but still allow transformations like the cube offered..
I like the NPC idea. And maybe " Item transformation" Could be a skill to some of the magical characters? Every level would be a better chance of it working, other wise your
items would go down to 0 durability momentarily or something?
