Fatalities

In the last boss fight from the game play video, it seems like the daemon kills two player char by a couple of instant death moves:

the female barbarian is bitten in half and the female witch doctor is roasted and slammed to the ground.

I find this addition to gameplay great but:
Provided that Blizzard lets us play HC, how would you like to see this handled?

-Should the instant kill only become possible after you've lost a certain amount of your health, like a finishing move?
-Should there be any indicator that the boss is trying to finish you off so that you have the possibility to retreat to safety?

Personally I like the second alternative better. If the daemon is ~10+ times the size of your char in only makes sense that he's able to chew you up, even if you're full health/full armor.

Done right, I think this could add some great excitement to playing HC.
What are your thoughts?

regards

Re: Fatalities

i figured those deaths were just cool graphics added to the death sequence. In one of the forums the devs talked about the wide variety of death animations for monsters. Not just shattering when frozen this time; lots of other appropriate fates. So I figure players share the same, and instead of just slumping over every time, we'll sometimes get decapitated, electrocuted, heads bitten off, etc. Some big monsters may have special animations for that, like the siege beast with the head biting. (Which I doubt is unique. There are probably a set # of such deaths animated, and it's just a matter of checking a cell in the spread sheet to enable which monsters can perform them.)

Please let them include that in pvp...

Re: Fatalities

I see, so that basically option one with the player at health zero.

Thanks for the reply,

specific death animations are so full of win that it's one thing that I totally love about D3 so far

Yeah, but playing HC, it's not something you'll want to see very often

Re: Fatalities

I could see maybe creating some low level characters just for killing to get to see death sequences... They'll all end up on YouTube anyway, so we can see 'em if we really want to (not quite like having it happen in game - but that's both good and bad in regards to HC!)

Re: Fatalities

I like seeing people die in hardcore. I am not the one who sincerely replies RIP after someone's death. If I do so be assured I am having ironical smile on my face. Death, mine or someone's else, in a fair battle is not something I am gonna cry about.

Everyone makes a choice when creating HC char. Everyone should be aware of risks of going to fight boss unprepared. Afterall, you CAN get ready for the fight and have minimal chances of dying. But we are all irrational so we just take our chances going against Mephisto with 'only' 70 cold resist, because surely extra hour trying to max it is not worth it. We are definetly gonna make it as is... are we?

It simply makes battle more epic when you reflect back at it. Don't you feel good when 4 people died during Diablo fight and you are one of the remaining 4 who made it through. I surely do.

So I believe game should be designed with SC in mind, and then provide HC mode, not the other way around. If it is tuned for safety of HC'ers, big part of 'hardcore' is lost.

Re: Fatalities

I hope they have these cool animations.

I hope they don't include 1 hit kill mobs or bosses, or ways to die in less than 1 second from full (and decent) health.

Re: Fatalities

1 hit kills would be ridiculous. i think D2 implementation of monster dmg vs player health is just fine.
