I can see, what you see not.
Vision milky, then eyes rot.
When you turn, they will be gone.
Whispering their hidden song.
Then you see what cannot be!
Shadows move where light should be.
Out of darkness, out of mind.
Cast down into the halls of the blind.
I'll 3rd that motion. They were always my favorite monsters in D1. I liked overlords too; just so solid and implacable and relentless, and they had that lovely grunting sound when you turned them into pin cushions. They were kind of recreated by Urdurs, and the base model was used for the butcher/smith/hellforge hammer guy, so they're probably gone as a base monster type.
I'm glad to see upgraded goatmen in D3. They were among my d1 favorites, with that splatting hit sound and the great death gurgle. They were nowhere near as much fun in d2.
I also missed the various knights from D1. I played a D2 mod at one point that moved those guys in, and they were very impressive even in the d2 world. Their sharply colored armor and war-like stances were much more intimidating than the bestial D2 minotaurs.
The Overlords\Butcher styled deamons with plumpy body, huge mittens and ponty ears\horns sure looked very nice.
Chaos lords with lightning throw and fast melee attack, looked like Diablo on a diet but were also cool.
The advocates/evil mages were annoying, yet fun to watch 'em dying.
The devilkin from D1 not D2 were purdy too.
Would be nice if these make a return.
I'll be pleased if we have monsters that attack with even a smidge of tactics. Just something other then an all out rush at your character or standing and firing.
Stuff like luring you into a trap with a weaker monster or different monsters working together.
My favorite monsters from DII were the frog-like things that were a relatively rare spawn. Saw variations of them mostly in the jungle and in the Palace cellar. Their sounds and death animations just nailed it for me.
