observations on the uber three

Earlier today I attempted to solo the uber three with my ww barb. Didn't turn out too well. Took quite a while, but I was finally able to do it with the help of a lifetap necromancer. My barb was just a mediocre BvC beast/ebotdz barb. Granted, I did not have the best of equipment or proper planning, but these are just my observations.

Anyway, here's my thoughts on the uber three:

Mephisto
Mephisto hits hard and furious, but he's actually the weakest of the three. I attempted him with a barb and did not have to use life tap at all. Just open the portal next to malah and lure mephisto over to it. Constantly whirlwind around him. Eventually his minions should be dying off and as long as you're engaged in combat with mephisto he doesn't spawn more. Just whirl him a few times and pop back into town for a quick heal if he's doing too much damage to you.

Baal
Baal is particularly nasty. He doesn't really have the damage to kill you, but he is nigh impossible to kill alone. His minions are all physical immune, so you can't leech off of them. He's not afraid to use his cold property knockback wedge on you, pushing you to the far edges of the screen while he regenerates. To make matters worse, he spams the mana burn attack on you, negating your ability to stay in whirlwind mode. The physical immune minions consist of act three vampire type monsters and ghosts. The vampires aren't a problem, but the ghosts tend to stack on top of baal, making you hit them more often then you actually hit baal when you're whirling. What I ended up doing is I brought in my enchantress to enchant me (for extra AR and the ability to kill minions while whirling). With life tap on, I spammed ww like there was no tomorrow. Used up a lot of mana potions to counteract the mana burn. Killed off all the minions and just whirlwinded around baal. With enchant I was able to kill each minion as it popped out, and life tap kept me alive

Diablo
Diablo himself is not too bad. He seems to be the same old Diablo clone, so his fire damage hurts if your resists are not up to par. However his minions come in the dozen and its very difficult to separate diablo from them. He also spawns them quite frequently. Diablo regenerates the fastest of the three, so unless you're extremely good about staying on top of diablo, it will be difficult to consitantly deal damage to him. You NEED to be constantly hitting him to stop him from regenerating, and whirlwinding was out of the option for me. Because the Pit Lords were so fat I hit them more than Diablo, giving him time to regenerate. What I ended up doing was just stand there and conc him to death. You can't do this alone though, you need an extra person to be casting life tap for you.

Additional notes:
  • Life tap charges are useless if you're a ww barb. Chances are your conc won't be fast enough for dracs to activate, and the lifetap from the wand doesn't last long enough.
  • The real Baal likes to teleport on top of you if you try to run away. If you ever get confused about which Baal is the real one, just walk away a bit, but keep them both on your screen. The one who keeps teleporting on you is the real one.
  • You can separate Baal from his copy by abusing his teleport AI. Provided that you yourself have teleport, just walk up to a building and teleport inside. The real Baal will teleport inside with you, leaving the copy stranded outside.
  • Open wounds saved the day. Without this mod (and life tap) I could not have done it. Open wounds stopped their crazy regeneration rate, allowing me time to take quick trips back to town without having all my work undone.

Haven't tried that but with their crazy regen rate you need a constant source of damage to knock them down. It would simply take too much time to kill the minions, lure baal/mephisto/diablo, and then finally use corpse explosion.

I'll go ahead and tell you I'm pretty sure you can't do this. It seemed to me right after you killed the minions they kind of melted into the ground (no corpse). As far as "you can't do this alone" that really isn't true I think. I did it with one other person but I believe it to be do-able alone. Try dracs grasp/last wish/ or charges and you can get life tap. I thought it was really fun. And as far as meph goes he can dish it out but can't take it, the conviction aura is what hurts you. I wouldn't dare try all 3 at the same time.

Well I was lacking in the crushing blow category, but how do you propose to keep up the whirlwind while fighting baal? The effectiveness of whirlwind is somewhat negated with all the targets around, and he mana drains you just about every chance he gets.

My smiter kills them all without using a single pot. The key is life tap constantly triggering with exile and dracs. The cb on atreon and goblin toe makes a big difference too.

I haven't had the fortune to test my chars on the uber three yet, but does the old method of figuring it out work?

For the Baal in the worldstone chamber:
Look at the lifebar and the word demon below it.

For the real baal it should be
|-----Baal-----|
----Demon

For the fake baal it looks like
|-----Baal-----|
-Demon

The only difference being the position of the word "demon"

I tried a little CE between my constant spam of life taps, and I found it to no affect. The boss had to be nearly right on top of it to have ANY affect at all. I found that using the left over corpses for a few revives was much more effective, because they lured a few of the summons away from the bosses. They werent a damage factor but I think they were able to help a bit in corwd control. Plus they saved my behind a few times while casting life tap. Even with my total of nine darklords I still managed to die a record amount of times. These guys are quite a force to be reconded with.

ExGreenBeret: I'm fully aware that a crushing blow smiter with life tap would have a much easier time with the three, more so than barbs because of the fact that smite ALWAYS HITS. I'm just posting my experience with a whirlwind barb so that others who plan to attempt tristram with a whirlwind barb can learn from what I went through.

dang79: Wow, I actually didn't know about that little trick. Can't remember because I really didn't pay much attention to the "demon" tag.
