there is no way to increase the max durability for any items on expansion or classic that i know of (unless it comes with the mod "increased max durability")

3x durability on rare weapons is pretty common, especially in Classic. In LoD I think they are refered to as failed uniques. It is due to the way magic find is calculated. Basically, if say, Hell Meph drops a battle hammer and ur mf% upgrades it to unique, the game instead drops a rare battle hammer with 3x durability because there is no unique battle hammer in Classic. There is another way this can happen due to monster levels and unique item levels, but Im not going to try to explain that one  . I think theres also a way to get 4x durability magic weapons too tho Ive got no clue how that happens.

Im not sure how it works, but i know that it works. Rare items either have their base durability, or 3x thier base durability.

You're right about the triple durability rares being failed uniques.

Failed sets come out as double durability magical items, I've never heard of quadruple durability.
