I can see clearly what monster my character is attacking just fine in diablo 2 and for that matter i can do so in every damn other arpg in history.
Just because diablo 1 featured a less in the way variant of the red outline dont mean we need a even larger neon bright version in diablo 3. There are plenty of ways to show to a player what monster s/he is targeting.
Two of the most common is highlighting the monster and showing a target ring at the monsters feet. Blizzard has come froth with no information at all why they choose to use a red outline that also turns the monsters semitransparent and showed us the underlying colors of the monsters, in affect letting us attack line characters without any 3d depth what so ever. Instead of say the systems that have been used by multitudes of games since diablo 2 was released.
Some like the red outline and others like me feel its trash. But given blizzards new focus on, only the casual players i foresee that we wont even have a way to turn it on or off. Because players could have a hard time knowing what they target and where they character is
I guess its because game companies no longer want the player communities to do anything in their games. Just look at the killing of serious mp play in modern warfare 2 on the pc. No dedicated servers, no mod support, no console, maximum player limit 9v9. When a developer is so stupid as to say mouse support and custom resolutions are features of a game you know that developer is better off never developing games for pc ever again. Its a win win situation.
Granted blizzard has not gone that far yet but they are on their way.
