    What are attack frames.

Ok let's get this straight. I'm NOT a noob. But when people talk about attack frames, I don't know what the heck they're talking about. Give me a simple description please. Thanks in advance,

    I second that.
Sometimes you have to burn a few bridges to keep the crazies from following you.

    Re: What are attack frames.

Theres probably someone around here with better and more in depth, knowledge, than me. But heres my few cents..

The D2 engine works in a way, that it divides every second in 25 frames. 25 screens/second if you will.

The only ingame know how, you need to be aware of when it comes to frames. Are the breakpoints.

A 10% Faster Cast Rate bonus, wont necessarily mean that you cast spells 10% faster!
And wont increase your cast rate unless you hit the next breakpoint.

Here are the Classes breakpoints, for cast rate.

Character Skill / Form Casting Frames
    23 22 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 7
    Amazon all 0 7 14 22 32 48 68 99 152
    Assassin all 0 8 16 27 42 65 102 174
    Barbarian all 0 9 20 37 63 105 200
    Druid Human 0 4 10 19 30 46 68 99 163
    Bear form 0 7 15 26 40 63 99 163
    Wolf form 0 6 14 26 40 60 95 157
    Necromancer Human 0 9 18 30 48 75 125
    Vampire 0 6 11 18 24 35 48 65 86 120 180
    Paladin all 0 9 18 30 48 75 125
    Sorceress Lightning / Chain Lightning 0 7 15 23 35 52 78 117 194
    other spells 0 9 20 37 63 105 200
    Merc Act 3 all 0 8 15 26 39 58 86 138
    Character Skill / Form 23 22 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 7
    Casting Frames

    (Copied from the Diablo Wiki)

As you can see, the Paladin has a standard cast speed, that allows him to cast a spell every 13th frame. (Almost 2 casts/sec)
If you get his cast rating up to 9%, his cast speed is decreased to 12 frames. And so on.

The actual cast speed, or attack speed, or hit recovery, wont increase a frame, unless you really hit the breakpoint. In my example, the important Cast Speed Breakpoints for a Paladin are 75/125fcr. Those are the most important ones.

Oh thanks, I think I kinda get it. So with level 30 Fanaticism, about how many Attack Speed mods will it take to max my Smite speed? Just a quick estimate will do.

Not sure what you mean by "attack speed mods." For most skills (this includes Smite, but there are some skills that are exceptions), it's the total IAS that matters when determining whether an attack reaches a certain breakpoint. How many sources of IAS there are is irrelevant. Anyway, it depends what weapon you're wielding. There are IAS calculators for that.

    Here's one: http://diablo2.ingame.de/tips/calcs/...lc_english.php

So for example, with a level 30 Fanaticism aura and wielding a berserker axe, it takes a total of 50% increased attack speed to get Smite to 6 frames per attack (the fastest possible for Smite).

If the paladin is wielding a phase blade instead, it only takes 6% IAS.

If the paladin is wielding an Ettin axe, it takes 72% IAS.

    Re: What are attack frames.

The base attack speed for a PB is -30. Which is the fastest one hand weapon in the game.

    Re: What are attack frames.

Games works similar to movies. The motion you see looks continuous, but it's just a lot of images pr. second. In diablo 2 it is 25 images pr. second. A frame is just another word for image. That is also why you can never attack faster than 25 times pr. second (or if you lag, even slower, but the attacks themselves won't be slower). If you reach a smite speed of 5 frames pr. second, it means every attack takes 5 frames and hence you can attack 25 / 5 = 5 times pr. second. During those 5 frames, you'll hit your target if your target is within your reach / range of attack. However you'll only hit once during those 5 frames, so at which frame do you hurt your target? The frame where damage is transfered on is the attack frame.

    Smite cannot reach 5 FPA.

    Re: What are attack frames.

Im sure it was just mentioned as an example, but 6FPA is the max speed of smite.

Some hits wont register either, if youre playing online. Which is why I never ever ever play MA Assassins with those charge up skills, online..
