One life to live:How not to get pk\'ed

After posting several columns about this topic I've decided to just go ahead and make a guide about what you need to avoid. The past few days has lead to a proliferation of player killing in hardcore with some of the more dastardly streaming their efforts. I saw a Paragon 94 lose their character yesterday and it saddened me since it didn't need to happen in the first place. The guide after the bumpdeeds

First and foremost this is a public game only situation, if you're playing solo I suppose you don't have to worry. Everyone else however you're character is on the line. So what do we do? The majority of pk's are flooding their banners with monsters and luring you in to your demise. With a few steps you can stop this.

    Step one: Inspect

A lot of times we assume people in a public game are in a rush and clearing monsters and we are missing out, so we rush to that banner to jump into the fray.Instead after you enter a game take a look at who is in it. Look for outliers. Are you in mp3 and someone is doing 5k dps? That could be a sign. Is there armor higher than their dps? Are they a Barb? Is there vitality higher then your Chances are if you can check off a few of those you're dealing with a pk. While pk's might use other classes by far the favorite is Barbarians and Barbarians with low dps, high vitality and defense are not there to slay monsters.

    Step two:Location

Look at where people are! Most act 1 runs follow a set path. Festering->Leo->Weeping->Fields of Misery. However a popular spot with a huge choke point is the hunting grounds. Almost no one I know runs that location, no one outside of pk's. If you see someone in the hunting grounds avoid it!Don't feel a false sense of security just because two or three others happen to also be there, pk's do work together and may have used another person to make it seem as if the group is actually clearing monsters.I have seen pk's use fields of misery and if that's the case move on to step 2.

    Step three:Banners

We have a banner right? You have to click on it before you end up next to them so why not look above it? Above their banner icon is notification of what they are fighting. Red is for elites, brown for regular monsters, and gold for a goblin. That icon won't dissipate until they are out of combat. If you see it constantly spamming their banner it's a sign they've hoarded up quite the pack. If they do manage to leap out and their banner dies down give it five seconds and see if their pack has come back.

    Step four: The chat

As you've taken stock of the other three things watch for what they say. Their whole point in that game is to kill you, and to do that they need you to banner to them. They will say "safe" or promise of a goblin but you can tell by their banner that this is not the case. The longer you take the more they will say to get you to come. You may also see the same thing from other players in the game. Remember they may be working together!

If at any point you don't feel safe find another game! Most importantly if you did not heed this advice or were not aware report the players responsible! i've encountered 4 Pk's from paragon 0-97 which means the vast amount of people i've encountered have not been pk's and have been quality folks. Don't let them ruin the game for you, chances are you may never see one but if you do follow the steps and get out alive.

This won't be going away anytime soon, but if people know how to avoid it, eventually it worth be worth it to try anymore. Anything I missed to help avoid this blight on the HC community?

Right click on player name / Icon to open menu, click \"View Profile\" or whatever... click heroes, view character\'s stats.

Anyway, that\'s a bad tip. Takes too much effort. Just forget it. The only real tip I can give you is don\'t be stupid. Don\'t go to areas where you can\'t survive for a few seconds. If you have temporary defensive buffs, use them before teleporting. Or... and this is the best option... Don\'t click banners! use waypoints the first 3 minutes of the game to get to know the baboons you\'re playing with. Also, play with friends...

Bliz tried to pk me yesterday. I was greeted with a horde pack and some regular mobs surrounding me immediately upon entering whimsy.

    you can't save them all.

i decided to test out the herding abilities of my dh in a public game. i repeatedly advised people to not portal on me, and once the wp got swarmed, i warned them to not take the wp. i was very clear about this, and eventually someone did come in and killed my pack of kittens.

Afterwards, i asked if he wanted me to herd up more and test his merit again. he said no, but it was well apperant to the party what i was doing. eventually, this dh decides he wants to break my trap... unfortunently he died as he was approaching my herd of cats.

i understand griefing and deceiving people is wrong, but should i feel bad someone died even though there were well informed of what was going on?

I don\'t understand the point of what you were doing, nor why you were doing it in a public game, if it wasn\'t to PK.

Besides which, telling someone don\'t do something is pretty much a sure fire way of getting them to do it. =/

While I haven\'t played in high paragon level games, this is pretty self-explanatory.

On the one hand, I don\'t think jerks should be doing this in the first place and if there was a way to prevent it (like immunity after banner until you move or attack, with the option to TP home instead) I\'d be all for it.

But on the other hand, only people who are really not very bright fall for these tricks given all the tools at your disposal to avoid them, and I kinda don\'t mind the not-bright people having to go back to level 1 and staying out of high-level games until they learn better. =/

The closest I\'ve come to being PK is someone who afk\'s in town, so I attempted to go on without him, and there was a pack of elites next to the entrance that were a little bit tough (but I was geared enough to take them down.) They might have killed an undergeared character before being able to retreat (frozen/jailor/arcane I think it was). I don\'t think this was intentional, I think he retreated to the entrance and then escaped to town and happened to be afk when I joined. He joined me later for a normal game a minute or so after I cleared that pack and didn\'t say anything.

But like I said in a previous thread, I banner to people all the time, usually within 2-3 seconds of joining the game, and so far I\'ve had no problem. I play on mp0 though and I\'m pretty confident of my gear\'s superiority to the monsters in the area I\'m zoning into, in my ability to either kill or at least run away and live.

Basically I\'m asking myself, if there was a trap in the zone this player is in, could I survive it, and except for whimsy the answer is pretty much always yes, and so far it\'s always been yes. -shrug-

More or less an experiment. They were warned, and still wanted to find out. Plus, it is a lot of fun rounding up monsters like that. /shrug

But why do it in a public, hardcore game? If you wanted to do it with your hardcore character, do it in a game without other people in it. If you wanted to do it in a public game, do it in softcore.

There really is no point to doing what you did unless it was to see if you could get the exact result you got.

Based on the fact people did the same in D2 I'd say people are too dumb to live. Then again, the pkers that don't announce themselves are not much less obvious...
