A 100+kg rock falling from the sky would break up any phalanx, no matter how disciplined the soldiers were!

Hitting stationary targets with a catapult already needs a bit luck while aiming at moving targets is almost impossible. Even on a hit, a 100kg rock from the sky would kill just a single man or two.

400 pieces of 1/2 K rocks works though.

Not that well against an armored unit with shields.

    Re: Ancient Greece

Killing is almost irrelevant, breaking the discipline and therefore the formation is what is important. Fear does the damage, not the rock.

    Re: Ancient Greece

Nitpicking: Killing is relevant. There is no fear of death if nobody dies

I doubt that a 100kg rock (which is about a cubic foot large) will inspire enough fear in a unit of soldiers. Anyway, onagers and in particular trebuchets need very long to reload and to acquire a target. That should make them almost unusable in a battle. If there are no stationary targets, you probably cannot do more with them than deciding which point to put under fire with a single shot and then hope that the enemy goes to there.

Effective war machines during a battle were ballistae, scorpions and the like. Catapults still have strategical use in a battle, however, like preventing the enemy from taking stationary positions.

    Re: Ancient Greece

Apparently I'm the only black belt at Google-fu here?

    • The phalanx did not carry shields in uniform fashion over time/development. That's being confused with Roman formations.
    • A phalanx wouldn't be of much help against a walled city, which might be the one location you'd know there would be one of these catapults.
    • The projectile fired by this catapult looks to be basketball sized. Unless it is fired at a low, cannon-style trajectory rather than the high, howitzer-style trajectory, it is unlikely to "skip" through and damage a formation.
    • Instead, using a bundle of spears or a cup of bullets would be the most likely method of anti-personnel use with this weapon system.
    • Why bother using such a weapon system in this fashion, when you'd have a better force multiplier having the crew use slings or bows?

Finally, use 0 A.D. for satisfaction of all your ancient bloodbath urges.

I'm currently wading through the blood of orcs and Haradrim in the Third Age mod of Medieval Total War, playing Gondor

Just like you can't walk into Mordor, you can't go and play Gondor. They won't have someone fiddling with their bits.
