Same here, but crappy internet is a price I'm willing to pay for peace and quiet, clean air, no traffic and no people.

There's always the satellite internet option...

Yeah, that's working reaaaaallllly well. So much choice.

Now when you want to change supplier, you have to hope BT will release their hooks from the copper wiring enough to allow another supplier to strangle your bandwidth after you've downloaded a cute kitteh video.

    True story:
When I moved into my current house, I wanted broadband to be supplied by another company. The other company told me to get BT to release the line to enable their broadband. BT told me the other company had to "request" it from BT. Here's a computer programme to illustrate what I mean.

10 BT tells you the other company has to request line release
20 The other company tells you BT won't release the line
    30 goto 10

I am not alone in having suffered this ongoing issue.
There's nothing quite like good healthy competition taking over from a publicly owned utility. Especially when the now privately owned company still holds all the cards, all the keys, all the kit. A bit like the privatised railway industry where different companies provide different services on ... oh, wait, the same old tracks that everyone has to use.

Oh yeah, Madge really got things done. Just don't look too closely at it all, right?

Well, I'm just the lucky guy who lives in the last house in the street which got cable TV. Under normal curcumstances, I would be just as screwed as you... and I would never give up the piece and quiet which Dredd loves as much as I do.

So, she's the author of all evil because she privatized things, but didn't do ENOUGH evil? Hmm...

The corporate/Gov't collusion filth isn't unique to ex-Socialist arrangements, you know. I could write a book on the LATA/Intra-LATA/Inter-LATA pseudo-Federal insanity here in the U.S., except that I have to start drinking heavily until I black out whenever I start dealing with the topic.

Besides, there's no syntax difference between your routine and that of troubleshooting Sprint/Verizon in NY. The only way to get these garbage "providers" to cooperate is to trick both technicians into showing up at the same time, when they can't actually point to the other one without their managers looking like idiots. Otherwise it's always "Reply Hazy, Ask Again Later".

EDIT - one thing of note, though - after all the vultures chewed up the flesh of Ma Bell, it was hilarious to see them claiming they need to put extensive money into networks, when all they're doing is glomming up dark fiber and coasting on previous tax-funded lines.

I'm simply saying she was incompetent and failed of her own stated purpose(s).

Like that logic puzzle with one guy who lies, one who tells the truth and you don't know which is which.

But .. we have Bob for that.

We see the same or similar stories in all the privatised utilities - water, sewerage, rail, telephony, electricity, National Health Service ... oh. Wait. Not that last one. Not yet.

One might assume you've never seen, "Yes, Minister".

Right, except there's about five other guys involved.

I never used that model much (edit - read link - used WHR-G54S copy of it) looks cool.
Still use my old RT350 but I would put a dedicated switchover routed Firewall Intrusion detection box in if working business and yea it would be a (L)unix based OS.
My Cable is good speed here so I really need the DOCSIS 3.0 as a lot of the neighbors don't have the right modems and congestions not that bad.
My Cable launched Digital Cable on my doormats system in 1997.
In February, 2008 they implemented Switched Digital Video (SDV) technology here.
