IMO much of the problem has to do with the methods and sensibilities behind USAID (full disclosure, I started my Gov't career with them as an "intern"). They basically fund contracts awarded by local gov't, after a review process, but there's little in the way of actual understanding the populace. Therefore, you get great soccer stadiums in Central American countries (all those little brown people like soccer, don't they?) but the stadiums are shoddily made and frequently cost almost as much as they might in some backwater U.S. location. Sure, we tell ourselves that the way to help these people is essentially trickle-down economics, but how much "trickle" really comes out of the project when the contractor is the brother-in-law of El Jefe?

Doesn't mean the money's completely wasted, but I still look at projects like the Grameen Bank as superior. There <should> be a complementary effort regarding establishment of legal property rights, but those come under attack by the gov't because they aren't in the best interest of the elites.

    Another mind thinking alike mine:

They talked about raiding pension funds and stuffing them with government I.O.U.s; American liberals are salivating at the thought of doing the same to our 401k accounts. Cyprus is in turmoil because it's part of the euro, so it can't monetize its debt - but is our ability to do so truly unlimited, or wise? Cypriot banks used the huge wads of cash they got from foreign depositors to make risk investments (among other things, they bought lots of Greek debt, which means they got suckered by promises from yet another socialist basket case.) American banks, responding to rules set in place by liberal politicians, also made risky bets that didn't pan out.

Don't send these people another bite, folks. You want to send them something, you want to help? Send them U-Hauls. Send them U-Hauls, some luggage, send them a guy out there who says, 'Hey, we been driving out here every day with your food, for, like, the last thirty or forty years, and we were driving out here today across the desert, and it occurred to us that there wouldn't BE world hunger, if you people would LIVE WHERE THE FOOD IS! YOU LIVE IN A DESERT! YOU LIVE IN A ****ING DESERT! NOTHING GROWS OUT HERE! NOTHING'S GONNA GROW OUT HERE! YOU SEE THIS? HUH? THIS IS SAND. KNOW WHAT IT'S GONNA BE A HUNDRED YEARS FROM NOW? IT'S GONNA BE SAND! YOU LIVE IN A ****ING DESERT! GET YOUR STUFF, GET YOUR ****, WE'LL MAKE ONE TRIP, WE'LL TAKE YOU TO WHERE THE FOOD IS! WE HAVE DESERTS IN AMERICA -- WE JUST DON'T LIVE IN THEM, *******S!"

    I lol'd
    .

Im new to this site, but I enjoyed reading these debates and opinions. Also, Ive been daytrading for 5 years and found it interesting that the original poster mentioned TZA, as Ive just started taking an interest in it a week prior to coming here. Any other daytraders here? Or mostly everyone talking about socialism and poverty ... HOW BOUT KOREA, huh?!

lol, but really. Interested in talking with traders if there are any.

I dont know how to fix our economic problems when the press isnt even informed about economics. They cant even begin to figure out how to report it, so what hope does anyone have of figuring it out? The press just boils it to blame this guy or that guy but theres no serious dialogue about fixing the economy.

I think it's obvious, but anyway: Whatever is found in the media, it's already old news with respect to making a profit on the stock market. You have to achieve that by anticipating things before the others do. If you just figure it out things together with everybody else, the profit has already been made by others.

This is kind of what I do. I do candlestick chart scans every night to see which stocks will have public interest in the coming days. Using my finds, I typically can be the first to buy in the morning and the first to sell before noon. I cannot, obviously, anticipate news or other excitement, so I am literally scanning 20-50 stocks within the first hour of open. Combining my charting and the rare "news play" , I make a decent penny in two week increments. I say two weeks because sometimes, there will be 10-12 days of no solid plays.

Anyone else delve into the world of pennystocks? ( not sure if I mentioned yet, but thats the market I mostly trade. )
